I could see from my own point of view a reason one might say that, as it
is quite "technical" at times, but no more than any DT in my opinion. I found
that I didn't like the CD at first, except for a couple parts. The album as a
whole is a little too moody, and if fact, just too damn big to take in all at
once, the first time. But, I also found that after listening to just a couple
different parts at a time over the period of time, I started to better know
the parts as separate songs. It then all started to come together in my mind.
Then I started listening to it straight through, and it is now one of my
favorite CDs in my collection. The album, like any music, isn't for everybody
and is perhaps the case with this person ^ . But, as another factor, I had
Parallels and Inside Out (and all their other albums too; I think Parallels is
better than Inside out) before APSoG, so I was much more familiar with Fates.
Parallels is much different than APSoG. It's just eight straight ahead songs.
I think it too is a great album. APSoG on the other hand, was something
completely different and new all for Fates. Perhaps borrow Parallels from
someone and give it a try and then give APSoG a few more tries. If it doesn't
work, then perhaps you're just not going to be a Fates fan, and there's
nothing wrong with that. But this is all just my opinion. Later.

Enough of this stupid shit!!! You're an idiot! Kev and Derek are two
different players that have two distinctly different styles. That's it. If
you don't like that fact, buy a Fates Warning CD.

The US & European release date for Gordian Knot is November 21, 1998.

The US release date for Platypus is merely listed as January, 1999.

hey hey, i was talking to this freind of mine who's all into ska and stuff and i mentioned that Dt's new stuff was coming out at the end of october and so the conversation turned in that direction - anyways, i asked him if he'd heard of Dt and he said "yeah, joe, umm, what's his name, with a p?" and i said "john petrucci?" and he said "yeah. that guy went to berklee to become a *metal* guitarist." he said that the way you'd say "he went to harvard to become a garbage collector." so obviously it instantly became a challenge for me to show him that DT isn't just a metal band. now... what are some good songs to show him DT? remember he's into ska. i was thinkin stuff to show him that they don't just use power chords and stuff, but then he mentioned that he saw a DT song tabbed out and it had like 27 chords in it, so i guess he already knows that. so i guess i'm hoping that out of the 1000+ people on this list, one or two will be into both ska and DT and might give me some insight into what he might find cool. heh, if only DT had a ska song :) progressive ska... hmm :) moo.

Ok, for all the newbies, here's a list of 10 topics that are no longer discussed, since we have beat them into the ground:

    1. Who is better: Kevin Moore or Derek Sherinian? 2. Who should replace John Petrucci if he were to die in a bizarre gardening accident: Steve Vai, Steve Morse or Yngwie Malmsteen? 3. Mike Bahr: Why does he have time to read the jam but doesn't answer my e-mail? Or the ever popular "where are my boots"? 4. Which members of DT use drugs and what are their favorites? Related topics: Did Kevin get medical marijuana in California for his testicular cancer? Did KJLB really have hash with his eggs in Amsterdam? 5. Who's better: The Backstreet Boys or N' Synch? 6. Whose religion is best, mine or yours? 7. Who sold out and how much did it cost? 8. Why new Rush sucks and old Rush rules. Or vice-versa. This argument has many parts, including the Metallica, Queensryche and DT segments. 9. Is Derek a hootenanny? Side topic - Did Derek sleep with your woman or your brother? 10. Vegatarians vs. meat eaters: Hamburger or Ham Murder?

I would suggest trying "Red", which (I believe) features the same lineup as LTiA. It's more cohesive, and "Red" the song, along with "Starless" and, oh hell, the entire album, is incredible. It's very heavy, incredibly heavy for the times.

I would also suggest "In the Court of the Crimson King" which features Greg Lake on vocals and bass. It's quite different than Red, with Robert Fripp the guitarist being the only constant between the two incarnations. (Am I right about this?) But it's very good too.

I'm sorry if I failed to make this point myself. I'm surprised that I was interpreted as just wanting to know who people thought was better. The jam's reflexes are good though - very quickly keeping a rational discussion from arising for fear of a bunch of idiots chiming in with inflexible opinions. I understand that fear, and I've already seen its well-founded, but I have learned to quickly jump to the next post in the digest when it becomes clear the current one is bullshit (doesn't take more than 2 SECONDS usually), its really pretty easy. OK that's it for me on this subject (i.e. I won't reply to anyone's rebuttal)- no sense beating a dead horse.

Moving from discussing the discussion of keyboards to discussing keyboards themselves. (Hint: If you're not interested, skip the rest of this post! :) For me, I judge the songs, not the player. This is especially true for KM & DS since my area of expertise is guitar, not keyboards. That is, I can critique JP, but the most I can say about KM and DS is that I like certain songs better than others and I have no real idea of how responsible they are for that (maybe others could shed light on this, if allowed to). And I don't usually analyze any of the songs too much anyway, unless for some reason I'm not very busy. To my knowledge most DT songs are collaborations. Add the producer to that mix (as somebody mentioned recently on the jam) and for me at least, it becomes really tough to judge who is really responsible for the keyboards anyway (probably others feel differently). As for who's the best technical player, I would hope we all agree that it's not answerable, or if not that then at the very least that its totally beside the point.

I hope this post didn't offend anybody by dipping into the "taboo/gray area/off limits topic/censored content/why can't we talk about prog bands I've never heard of instead of DT" part of the jam. :)
