Damn! Did I leave Fates Warning bashing off of my list of forbidden
    subjects? ;o)

Actually this was another very controversial topic. Lots of people
left the jam after that one. I wrote a lot about it at the time, so I
    won't say a lot now.
APSoG may be considered Fates best. It's different than all the
others. It only has one guitarist. All the other Fates recordings had
2 guitars and a heavier sound. "Awaken the Guardian" is the best of
the first phase of Fates (with John Arch singing), while "No Exit" may
be the best of the second edition of Fates (after Ray Alder took over
on vocals). (Hardcore Fates fans may call the addition of Mark Zonder
on drums the third phase of Fates) APSoG could be considered the first
recording of a new phase, with only one guitar and more keyboards.
It's mellower, and hell, it had Kevin Moore playing keyboards. That
made it more appealling to DT fans.

Fates is a very subtle band, so it may take awhile to get into them,
if you ever do. Some people just consider them boring.

    Hope that makes sense.

I hate fueling the fire on such a topic (Those of you who just decided
to hit the pagedown button -- DON'T!), because when I watch people respond
to such a dumb thread, I always think, "Why don't they just stop?"
However, I had something to say, and unfortuantely, the only way to say it
is to respond to a thread which I don't want to live.
Don't get me wrong, I don't really mind the discussions about Kevin and
Derek. I, personally, don't read them all that much, but I have a
pagedown key, so I can skip them. It doesn't bother me all that much.
Here's what bothers me (KEEP READING!): The whole thread is no longer a
Derek vs. Kevin thread. It's now a you-flame-me I'll-flame-you thread,
disguised under the Key Wars subject line. To the people who are
complaining about not being able to talk about this because you're new,
you need to realize something. By responding with SO MUCH FORCE, SO MANY
TIMES about being squelched on the list, you're merely fueling the fire of
the people who are going to cut you down for doing it.
And to the people who are doing the squelching: just stop. It's very
simple, really. If you don't want to read a post, skip it. Just keep
going. If someone wants to talk about Key Wars, let them. If you think
it's a waste of time, then don't waste your time on it. But don't stop
everyone else from wasting their time in whatever way they wish.
I personally don't care for the thread, but I can live with it being
there. Just please, don't post ten flames per jam under the topic of
Kevin vs. Derek. To both camps: moderate yourselves, eh?
Thanks for reading (all of you who are still with me), and have a good
    one --

For the life of me, I can never understand how even the filthiest, most
disturbing, most violent film in the world somehow ends up being more
dangerous than a high-powered assault rifle.

Instead of regulating the guns that blow people's heads off, we're going
to regulate movies that show you a picture, on a screen, in 2d,
projected from a wall and of no actual danger to anyone, of the gun.

To the guy/gal who posted about Angra's Fireworks:

Picked up the album a couple of days ago... Pretty impressive, if I may
say so. This is really an excellent disc, though I can already say that I
think I'll like Holy Land better in the end. What I noticed is that the
song structure of much of the songs is always the same: intro / verse /
chorus / verse / chorus / middle part (I admit it: the 'Middle Parts' are
always just GREAT) / repeat chorus. What I mean is that I just know
where the really good stuff is on this CD: in the middle of each song.
After hearing a song or three it gets a bit predictable. But hey, still is
a great album, with some very Dt-ish moments in it (I don't remember which
parts exactly, but i'll post more detailed comments when I'm more familiar
    with the album).

    Hi

If I remember correctly, the censors in Britain wanted to cut A Clockwork
Orange in parts but, rather than let them chop up his film, director
Stanley Kubrick decided that he wouldn't let it be shown in anything other
    than its original form.

I'm pretty sure that's what happened, although I may be thinking of another
film from that time (The Exorcist, perhaps, which was also banned) but I'm
    sure it was ACW.

So Kubrick effectively banned it himself.

I'd imagine Jordan's interpretation of LtL would be exactly as the sheet music
he is handed 2 minutes before the performance. While that is quite a feat to
have achieved this level of proficiency, it by no means makes him a superior
musician. LTE allows us to see that Jordan is not only a superior technician
/ sight reader, he can also hold his own improvising. However, Jordan's style
just seems to be so NOT Dream Theater to me.

    Hello

I am a regular reader (since before the switch to @ax.com) and a irregular poster. I am faced with a problem - I live in Melbourne, Australia. I have tried to import LTE through one of our major CD shops (JB HiFi) but they cannot get it in. The only other idea I had was to organise some kind of swap with one of you numerous US folk. I could buy it from CDNOW, but our AUS$ is currently at an all time low (0.57) - which would mean it would cost me heaps.

I would be happy to buy a US person a similarly hard to find Aussie CD maybe? Or just a straight CD swap?

Please help me out - I've waited far too long to get this CD!

    Thanks in advance Evan

So you don't really get to say "fuck skadz, i'm gonna talk about it anyway." cuz then you die. or at least get kicked off the mailing list. but i bet he'd do something really cool too like subscribe you to a bunch of gay porn mailing lists. not that i have a problem with gay porn, i'm a big fan of it myself, but apparently some people tend to find it distasteful, so we can use it against them.

and if you didn't catch that, nearly everything i said was a joke. except the part abotu skadz. moo.

Okay, now that I have your attention: First, I might start off by saying in response to Kevin Carmouche's "Grey Areas" post. I agree with your post 'a little' and that is it. Most of your post is so 'against the grain' that I was downright pissed off when I read it. I might start off by saying that I was booted from the jam for stating my opinion once, and what I posted wasn't near the caliber of how 'off the deep end' you went. You broke EVERY SINGLE FREAKING RULE of the ytsejam, and quite honestly I won't be surprised if you are gone quite quickly. Your protest may be warrented (in your opinion) but your approach wasn't the least bit professional or tactful. The rules were listed to you when you joined the ytsejam, and you didn't adhere to them. Why are these rules in place, you ask? To prevent the "rehashing" of certain items that were posted and re-posted a million times cluttering mailboxes with useless ytsejams that were so off key that they were rendered uninteresting. All of the grey areas are items that were so controversial that they were considered "dead". If you aren't willing to consider them "dead" find somewhere else to talk about them, because I'm tired (and I know many others are tired) of hearing (reading) about it. Why did I subscribe to the ytsejam? I subscribed to the ytsejam to hear more about updated DT stuff, rare bootlegs, hot prog and prog metal info and to hear opinions about the music I listen to. It once found the re-hashed topics interesting (like 2 years ago) but I have heard them so many times that I am bored with it. Kevin Carmouche wrote something to the effect of "If you don't like to hear about this, don't read it or skip it" or something like that. I'm not willing to do that when I get 5 ytsejams in my mailbox about the same damn topic! It's a dead thread for god's sake! I've learned in the past that if you want to end a problem or critisize a problem, you should offer a solution: Here's my solution, read the Frequently asked Questions. They can be found by going to www.dreamtheater.net, there is a link to the site. Read them and all pertanant band related info can be found. In summary, I respect all ytsejammers. In fact, I consider all ytsejammers extended members of my family. But when someone blatenly disregards to rules by which we are governed, I get a little "hot headed" and angry. I'm going to start hangin' with Korg.. he knows where the beer is.. I need one right now : ) I hope I can now step off my soap box. Later, J

It's likely that this has been covered in the Jam before but, I was wondering about the possibilities of having DT in The Simpsons. How did Aerosmith or U2 ever get into the show? Does it depend on the personal taste of the creators? Or can it be arranged?

Hello there, just a quick Q: to all the European, esp. the German Jammers:

I keep asking my local record dealer now for about 3 Weeks if the PLATYPUS album is out now. And from what they tell me, it's on their list but still not available yet. No, it's not confirmed if it's been pushed back to Jan. '99. 'Cause I think that some jammers already listet WPCTS on their NP list. BTW, my local record dealer isn't one of those whose first comment on anything besides mainstream music is 'Who? What?' So, any comments? Arash?

Thanks a lot, Oliver from Germany, the land where 'Still Life' is already out. Sorry, had to say that...
