Jaxx Club, Virginia, 9/18/98. This show KICKED MY ASS. Which is saying a lot
considering I'd never heard Savatage before and had no idea what to expect.
Kezcom was kind enough to get me a ticket since my funds prohibited such
frivolous spending, and I thanked him during and afterwards repeatedly for
introducing me to a unique group of musicians. If you haven't heard this band,
do what I did and hear them live first. You'll be hooked like Peter Pan was
the day that pirate captain tried to tickle him. Savatage has it all - two-
guitar attack, five-part vocals, long hair, smokers, sneers, jokes, action
figures, and music the Highlander would probably play on his car stereo.

I've never heard a metal band do five-part vocals. We're talking about the
sort of thing that happens at the end of operas where you're annoyed as hell
because everyone's melodies fit together but the words are a big jumble that
no one can understand, even the people in the audience who DO speak Italian.
Anyway, what I heard went like this:

    Dude1: La-la-la-lee-lee-lee-loooooooooo, La-la-la-lee-lee-lee-looooooooooooo
    Dude2: Ba-ba-bo-ba-ba-booooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooo
    Dude3: KEEEEEEE-CHAAAAAAA-DUN-DAAAAAAAA-BLYYYYYYYYY
Dude4: Bow down for luck. Bow down for luck. Bow down for luck and grapes.
Dude5: You can't understand any of us. Because your ears are dwarven steel.

The first time they did this penta-vocal thing they each came in one at a
time. I was floored. The keyboardist was one of those lucky singers who has
the low range of a grizzly bear and the high range of Celine Dion. Well he
wasn't exactly Celine Dion, he was more John Popper. But he was a versatile
vocalist with a great sense of humor. When he traded off with the lead
vocalist (Zachary?) it worked REALLY well, they melded like vocal-brothers,
nothing at all like Doug Pinnick and James Labrie, who sound more like
illegitimate cousins once removed. Guitarist #1 had blonde hair. He played
many different guitars. He was mighty quick. He even made a CHARVEL sound
great when the band did a song from their first album. I mean, you might as
well run him through some Gorilla amps, like that Ptacek character.

Guitarist #2's face was a cross between John Petrucci and Minnie Driver. This
made him attractive and exotic, yet rugged and tranquil all at the same time.
I think his name was Al Pitrelli. He did things effortlessly, by which I mean
he didn't nail a repeated lick once or twice, he consistently nailed
everything while smoking and sneering and squinting all at the same time.
That's serious motor control. He didn't do many solos, but what he did was
astonishingly consistent considering where his fingers were running off to.

The bassist played bass and sang, and the drummer played the drums. But back
to the REAL instruments, the ones you can play while squinting and sneering
and smoking and looking just plain MEAN. Watching the two guitarists made me
realize what I've been doing wrong all this time. Both of them had their
respective hands very close together when they played. Al's guitar was slung
very low, yet he was still quick. His hands were often less than a foot from
each other, AND his left thumb was above the neck. There's something about
that thumb being over the neck that gives a player more control over what he's
doing. I've never done that, I've always clamped my thumb down on the back of
the neck, and I've always had problems keeping my fingers from flying OFF the
neck. But keeping the hands close together probably yields more control over
an instrument that hangs down from the torso. (see "When I Was A Little Boy"
    by Steve Vai)

Petrucci slings his guitar very high, and as a result his fast picking is more
a result of a back-and-forth wrist movement. Pitrelli's guitar was slung very
low, which means his right elbow and wrist were relatively vertical. His
picking was more a result of VERY small motions with his right hand, with
almost NO flexing of the wrist joint, with probably a LOT more strain on his
right bicep and chest muscle. Instead of his left hand coming UP to the guitar
neck like Petrucci with the high-slung guitar, it was snaking AROUND the neck
way down by his crotch, maybe that's why his thumb was above the neck. Perhaps
I was built to play like Minnie Driver and was never meant to handle a guitar
with colorful munchkin faces all over it... Perhaps I've pissed off everyone
who doesn't give a rat's ass about playing the guitar...

I'm going to buy an album by Savatage as soon as my last raise kicks in. I
recommend them to everyone because there isn't a single slouch in the entire
operation. The keyboardist did a solo that included a song with the lyric "I
am the dark inside the night" that almost had me in tears. Damn that
keyboardist was emotive. I think his name was John Oleeva. Or if he was
    Italian it was probably Oliva-matta-you.

Is Marcelo Vanzin still on this list? Can he e-mail me please? Can someone
    force him to e-mail me?

Now controlling my thoughts: Fear Factory, "Obsolete." SHOOOOOOOOCK!!!

Jackie Chan's autobiography "I Am Jackie Chan" is very informative, for all
you out there who appreciate his artistic productions. I think he should tour
with G3 next year and just invite people on stage to fight with. Then Chow Yun
Fat could come out and fire a few rounds into the crowd just for kicks. Then
shoot himself a couple times to let everyone know how serious he really is.

    Go see "Blade."

    I'm out of advertisements. Later.

    >(the answer must contain DTC)

Well... Bananas work at Microsoft, but usually only during lunch and coffee
breaks. It all depends on what you might term work., however Now, Bill
Gates' pretty red-haired little secretary brings a banana for lunch
everyday. Now, what she does with the banana at lunch might be considered
work by some, or play by others. You never know when that banana might get
    replaced by a 12-inch frozen burrito, a long-neck Budweiser, James' LaBrie's
microphone, etc... But in a sense, you can say bananas do perform
particular duties at Microsoft that other people or appliances might not
    perform as well.

The thought has crossed my mind on occasion, but Emanuel Lewis would have to
be a pretty busy little boy, though, and I'm sure you'd all have a tough
time fighting Michael Jackson for a night with him.

good estimate on stage size, but they were not sitting on benches those were stools

    > Here's the setlist: > Handful Of Rain > Sleep (Jon and Zak trading off vocals) > **ENCORE** (This part they did electric!)

First off, Sleep was done by Zak, Jon did not sing lead. Second, the last song of the set was Wake Of Magellen and Third, They played Morning Sun (or as Jon calls it Morning Wood :)

    > truly look like they are having FUN on stage. Laughing, smiling > (despite the horrible conditions) and making fun of each other....it was

Horrible conditions? they chose the venue themselves and have played there before...Thats why they chose to do the acoustic show there. They did not have the room to do a full stage show. Last time they were there, they could not fit Jeff's drums on stage.

    > anyway...the show ruled and I feel like kicking myself at not seeing > them every chance I get (they play in NY quite often).

NY area, they usually hit NJ, CT and NY during their tour. One date in each state.

Sorry to nitpick your post, but i wanted to clear up some points that were not correct...But you are right about one thing, The show did kick ass :)

Okay the countless "Jordan's TTT performance rules, why isn't Rudess in DT?" is getting stupid. I've listened to the TTT mp3 a couple of times and I can't see the reason why such conclusions as "Jordan is amazing" can be drawn. The last few minutes show whether or not Jordan FITS DT and I think those few minutes of improv speak clearly - HE DOESN'T. His improve lines are very repetitive and pattern driven. They aren't BAD, but they just aren't all that exciting. His technique is almost flawless (probably flawless if he had more time to prepare), but it just seems to be lacking in terms of flair.

What next, I put up a .mp3 with Ray Alder singing the chorus to Pull Me Under (no, I don't have this - and Alder was timid that night anyway) and the talk goes flying on just how PERFECT DT would be if Alder replaced James LaBrie? It just seems tacky to me to discuss how much better DT would be with Rudess. You guys have been given the best possibility - DT Kevin Moore era / DT Derek Sherinian era / LTE (Rudess).

I'm not sure this kind of thing would be necessary at all. Perhaps now that they may have some *real* time to put an album, they could do something like half an album of written, rehearsed material, and half an album of improv stuff (in reasonably-sized chunks, of course).

Ok, I noticed everyone else asking guitar repair-ish related questions, so I will (forgive me since it is only vaugely DT related, but hey, JP plays an Ibanez right?)

I have an RG series guitar and the tuning machines are broken -- the threaded part with the nut that holds the gear into the tuning machine has broken on about 1/2 of them (made out of very thin metal, otherwise a great guitar but..) The string tension keeps them in, but when you have to change strings...

Problem is I have been told that Ibanez tuning machines are a non-standard size and I can't just use a generic replacement. Is this true? If so does anyone know where I can get some nice black finished tuning machines for Ibanez that are made of a little better stuff (even my old Fender Squire had better machines than these...?

    Thanks. Private email is ok.

CyberDuke suggestion on LTE#2 (Take Two):

The topic's hot again so I'll say it one more time:

I read in Mike's story about LTE that at first they planned doing some covers but later came up with so much material that the thing never happened.

Among possible songs to cover were mentioned (by Mike personally):

Frank Zappa - Peaches and Regalia Al DiMeola - Egyptian Danza

For all those who know these songs know they're AWESOME! And I just can't imagine how LTE will cover them. That would be the day to die for! :)

Yo Mike, still alive and well? Did ya hear that? :) Hope you'll consider it!

On the other hand fellow jamers, don't you think it's possible that while the 1-st recording sessions for the LTE1 they did some cool tracks but later decided to just keep them and they never made it on the album? They might already have prepared material for the new one. I bet they have some few hours tracks of jamming in the studio. Yo Mike, since you're the collector guy, pass them on boy! ;) Let those "kids" see the daylight!

    Just my 2 denars :)

Hello all. Just thought I'd comment on some new cd's that have came out recently.

    1. Bruce Dickinson-Chemical Wedding. If anyone is a fan of Bruce's solo stuff or Iron Maiden this is a must have cd. For those who arn't familar with his solo work, it is in my opinion a lot differnt from old Iron Maiden material which most every metal fan is familiar with. This album is hard to classify, but it's definately metal. The musicianship on this album is superb. The bass and guitar really stand out. While I wouldn't say that this album is a "progressive" album, it does have some progressive elements such as the fact that it's a concept album, the fact that it has outstanding musicianship, and the fact that it's far from mainstream rock or metal. It's hard to compare this album to others because it's very original, but the overall vibe is dark and agressive. The overall sound is comprised of heavy guitars and melotic passages which is not unlike DT. I would say that anyone who is a fan of the Awake era DT would really dig this album.Jeff Cline "Some of the most wonderful people jcline@toltec.astate.edu don't fit into boxes" www.immortalsoul.com Tori Amos _________________ / | / | /______|_______ | / | / ________|_/______
