You know, some of you DiMarzio types that don't like the muddiness of their
pickups should try some Seymour Duncans. The mids and lows in Duncan's are
always pretty clear - especially compared to DiMarzio - and they're potted
better, too, which avoids the problem of squealing in a high gain, high
volume environment. Like heavy metal.
Pickups to try - Bridge:
J.B. - my personal favorite. High output, screaming high end and a nice,
tight bottom. :)
Custom - Very warm and even sounding, medium high output - like a PAF with
about twice the volume.
Distortion - Crunchy high end and higher mids, with very high output. A bit
thin for me...
Neck:
'59 - A very smooth copy of the PAF's in a '59 Les Paul, with a bit more
output. Very warm.
Jazz - Hotter and brighter than the '59, and with a unique sound. Randy
Rhoads' neck pickup of choice. Makes for a fabulous clean sound with a JB in
the bridge and the switch in the middle...
On EMG:
I used these for years, and for all out crunch, they're excellent. I decided
I wanted a warmer low end, however, so I went back to Duncan's. The EMG's
are a bit sterile in the lows to me now that I'm playing slower, and not
using as much processing. :)
Sorry for all of the NDTC. I did hear the OAN bootleg - I can't remember the
title - and thought it was pretty good, especially "Scarred".
Lastly, thanks to all of the 'jammers that came out to Savatage on Friday
night. See you at King's X? (Maybe we'll have CD's by then...)

That's because what you saw was a repackaged version of a special called It
Came From The 80s II: Metal Goes Pop. It originally came out two years ago and
at the time the Poison reunion was not definite. While I loved that special
when it first came out (and it was an hour long back then too), by now a lot
of that information is out of date. Vince Neil has since returned to Motley
Crue; Ratt has reformed, released an album, and is recording a new one for
Sony, George Lynch is out of Dokken and has been replaced by Reb Beach (ex-
Winger, Alice Cooper), Vixen has released a new album, Cinderella has gotten
back together, and, of course, the aforementioned Poison reunion has taken
place (although they are dragging their asses). Just in case you didn't know.

I love the 80's metal music. It was a fun time. Despite the image,
which I must say was FUN; it couldn't have been better. I am SO happy to hear
that these bands are touring again. I know that Quiet Riot reformed as well
as Warrant and Slaughter are still putting out kick-ass music. I miss all of
this music, although it took me several years to realize it. With music today
being so "flooded" with programmed music it's only a matter of time before the
market bottoms out (like it did in about '91) and a new style of music is
going to come about. Hopefully we'll see the return of the power-ballad and
hard rock. It's starting now with bands like Creed, Candlebox and Days of the
New. The more popular this style gets THE BETTER! LONG LIVE POWER-
METAL/ROCK!!

I was just at FYE in my hometown, and I saw a good selection of Savatage
CD's. So... they were pretty cheap, and Dead Winter Dead really caught my
attention. I listened to Christmas Eve ONCE, and was BLOWN AWAY. This
song is INCREDIBLE. It's one of the ONLY songs EVER WRITTEN that I
personally think rivals Metropolis pt. 1. To all who haven't gone out and
gotten some Savatage yet, GO GET IT. Go *NOW!*

I attended the Savatage/Division/Mercury Rising show at Jaxx this past
Friday.
I got to meet the legendary Bafu and Kez (pronounced keys....).
Anyway Mercury Rising started the show off. Their set was hampered by
poor sound at times. It seemed the sound went from bad to good. The
vocals though of the Ray Alder look-a-like Clarence were excellent.
Finally after seeing them at the 2 Powermads, I was actually able to
hear his vocals...
Next up was Division which had an excellent set. They went through some
of the new material and if the new cd ever comes out it will be a must
have.
This was my second time seeing Savatage. The first time was one of the 3
US warmup dates for the European tour. Like last time, Savatage kicked
ass. They are in my opinion the best live band out there. Do yourself a
favor and see Savatage in concert. Nothing will compare, not even DT.
The band sounded great musically and vocally.
DT-note: on the way out the club owner said DT would be playing 2 dates
there sometime in the near future. A little hard to believe...

You guys have it all figured it out wrong..If you go to Rudess (which is a great person by the way....I've emailed him back and forth at least twice) homepage you'll see the original version of what really happened. According to Rudess it was the most difficult decision in his life since he had to choose between Dixie Dregs and DT. What made Rudess deviate from DT was the tight touring schdeules that DT had. So the reason was, Rudess didn't want to tour that much!

H=FFdra is a French band that has been around since 1994, but this is their debut CD. The members of the band are from The Alpes. They are playing a melodic Progressive Metal I think would attract lovers of Dream Theater. I think that tracks like "Cross Section" would appeal to many Dream Theater fans. Other influences are early Bon Jovi, Magnum, Rush, Saga and Vow Wow.
All musicians have qualifications from French high schools of Music (CMCN, Conservatories) and they are really good. The music is going through many changing atmospheres and complex harmonies with many surprises and qualities. Unfortunately the singer has got a rather obvious French accent on some tracks. Maybe they had better singed in their native language French. But that doesn't bother me that much.
My favourite track is "Silently" that has got a guest appearance by Fabienne Champey on lead vocals. Other highlights are "Heaven knows" and "Remembrance of a Day past" together with the aforementioned "Cross Section".
This is the only French progressive rock band I've heard that could compete with progressive rock bands from the rest of the world.

Well, I guess what I mean is - when putting together the first one, they didn't even know who exactly was going to be in the group until the last minute. This time, even if the rehearsal/recording time is about the same, they have past experience to fall back on. They've worked together before, so they know a little about how each person likes to work, and they can start "writing" stuff (riffs or whatever) now, rather than starting that at the same time they push "Record" for the first time. :-)
