Yeah I have seen this guy a couple of times. Actually I have found
out that another WCW wrestler, namely Chris Jericho is a huge metal
head. I know for sure that he loves Blind Guardian, Gamma Ray and
Helloween. I just have to get in touch with this guy so that I can
send him a complimentary BG shirt so he can wear it on tv. Now that
would rock!

The pleasure was all ours, Mike. I'm sorry that it took me so long to see you, especially since you ROCK so good. Damn, he CAN play guitar. :) Go see Division when they come to your town. I would like to reaffirm that this boot(Static Progress) kicks much ass, and OAN is GREAT to deal with. Get it, you won't be disappointed. Note to Alpine: Please ignore the previous two lines. I know how you feel. I agree, but......... time marches on, and us newbies have to start somewhere.

EMG Pickups really kick major ass, esp. for heavy distortion sounds. Listen to Metallica on Ride the Lightning (passive pickups) then Master of Puppets (EMG's) to get an idea of how much a difference these pickups can make. Also listen to the killer tones on ...Justice and The Black Album. DiMarzio and Seymour Duncan make really good pickups as well. I don't really have too much experience with these guys, though, b/c my Gibson and Carvin stock pickups are pretty good, but pretty much everybody uses one of these two if they don't use EMG.

*Grin* I must say that they do have alot of stage presence...... and they certainly have a whole helluva lot of fun on stage! I love it when they make fun of each other & stuff! I dunno about Celine Dion, but you DEFINITELY have the grizzly bear part right (oh, and the sense of humor thing too!).

You got it the second time. It's Jon Oliva (aka "The Mountain King"). To give you a little background on him, in addition to being Sava's main songwriter (along with their producer Paul O'Neill) and keyboardist, he's the original lead vocalist on all but their last four studio albums. Also, his brother (Criss Oliva) used to be their (amazing) lead guitarist. Unfortunately, Criss was tragically killed by a drunk driver shortly after the "Edge of Thorns" CD came out.
As far as Jon goes (and by now you know he's kind of a physically imposing person - plus you might have seen his wickedly evil grins)..... get this: When I saw Sava in June, I was front row (right in front of the keys), and Oliva was pointing people out in the audience. At one point, he pointed me out, and gave me his most absolutely sinister, completely evil grin! Jesus..... I think my blood froze at the time.

*LOL* (I'm trying to picture your description of Al Pitrelli.......hehehheh). And here's just a tiny little bit of obligatory DT content: Al is friends with Derek Sherinian - and has played with him in this little side project cover band type thing called "Ethyl Mertz".

Here's my recommendations:
If you really dig the 5 part harmonies and the classical influence pick up one of the following two:
"The Wake of Magellan" - This one (their latest) is an awesome concept CD based on two true real world events, which are then tied together by a fictional story. This CD has a good dose of classical influence, including three instrumental songs on it. Zak Stevens sings lead vocals on all songs except two which are done by Jon Oliva (plus another three acoustic bonus tracks which Oliva sings on the U.S. version).
"Dead Winter Dead" - This one is a concept CD based on the Bosnian war. Style-wise it's pretty similar to "The Wake of Magellan", though I'd say "Dead Winter Dead" is perhaps a bit more emotional. It also has some really cool Beethoven and Mozart stuff on it. Once again Zak is the lead vocalist, though Jon sings two tracks. You really can't go wrong with this one, or TWoM.
Also keep an eye out for:
"Handful of Rain" - This one would be my third pick. It's not AS classically influenced as the first two, though it still has a 5 man harmony on one song, "Chance". This CD also has my all time favorite power-ballad, "Alone You Breathe", which is dedicated to the recently (at the time) deceased Criss Oliva (this one is a real tear-jerker). Zak sings all the tracks on this one. Also, this disc has the very capable Alex Skolnick on guitar (from Testament, Attention Deficit), but no Al Pitrelli or Chris Caffery (ditto about Pitrelli/Caffery on the next two I list also).
"Edge of Thorns" - This is another excellent CD, although I prefer the above three. This CD is more straight-forward metal/hard rock, and has much less classical influence, except on a few tunes. Notable is that this one (and all other CD's chronologically prior) have Criss Oliva on guitar (this guy smokes!). Zak sings all of this one BTW. Also a different drummer, Steve "Dr. Killdrums" Wacholz. :-)
"Streets- A Rock Opera" - Another brilliant concept CD, this one with Jon on vocals. Although I like Jon, his voice is VERY rough and gravely here, and it's really tough to get used to. Hence, I'd really recommend you start with the amazing Zak era CD's first.
With that..... now we're talking about the Oliva-vocals era discs, and those are a whole 'nother can of worms! ;-)

That's from the song "Believe", which is on "Streets". That line is also repeated in Criss Oliva's memorial, "Alone You Breathe" (check out the quotes at the bottom).
Hey Bafu, what did you think of Zak Stevens' vocals? I consider him to have a brillianty full, deep and powerful voice (actually, he's probably my favorite singer). His voice is so warm and emotional on the softer stuff, and gets down 'n dirty on the metal songs too!

Any guitar do-it-yourselfer should have one thing coming in to his mailbox every few months: a StewMac catalog. Stewart MacDonald has everything you could possibly need to do work on your guitar. I tried finding a 4-pole, 5-way switch so I could wire my EMGs without a push-pull splitter: the ONLY place I found this was at StewMac. E-mail me if you need more info. And Korg, I would only suggest EMGs for the serious metal player. They have little versatility as humbuckers, though I hear using them in concert with single coil EMGs works nicely (me hates single coils). I put them in my Washburn MG as I only use that guitar for my metal playing. My Ibanez JS gets 90% of my playing time no matter what, but ya gotta have a solid backup. My MG has an 89 in the neck and an 81 in the bridge. I'm taking pics of it (and my other equipment) soon in case any poor soul is so bored as to care to see it. And on new album releases, I am overjoyed at albums coming out that I'm sure many of you could care less about. Variety is certainly the spice of my life:
1) Cowboy Mouth: New album means national tour, so they'll be in Boston soon! This is hands-down the best live band there is. And yes, I realize the implications of what I typed.
2) Fighting Gravity: The best pop-ska band around. I highly recommend these guys to anyone who likes Dave Matthews. They're the next big thing, as much as I hate to say that.
3) Joshua Redman: An album of covers! Woo-hoo! When I saw Josh (he asked me to call him that :) ) in April, he alluded to this album's release and played a couple of songs to be featured. Should be great stuff.
4) Chris Isaak: If his record company would update his site, I might have known about this sooner. That last album was a disappointment (Baja Sessions), but it wasn't an original effort. But following up Forever Blue is impossible anyway.
I know I'm forgetting something in the next couple weeks, but I'll just check my newspage tomorrow and get back to y'all. I know- baited breath. I got Sox tix for tomorrow night: YAY! Magic number is FIVE!!! And bless Dionysus for bringing back our Bafu and restoring chaos to the known universe. Korg has help in his almighty quest to incur an apocalypse.
