Well, I finally downloaded it, all 11+ megs of it, and I must say that I
was impressed. Not "Jordan, what the fuck are you doing in the Dixie
Dregs? Get back to DT!" impressed, but still impressed. The
performance during the main parts of the song is definitely on, and I
think the improv at the end is just the band members having fun. It
brings to mind the solo to Freebird (which, coincidentally, four years
later, DT decided to include in TTT, if I'm not mistaken) and the solo
trade-offs in the Wurm movement of Starship Trooper on Keys To Ascension
    by Yes. Purely my opinion.

counterpoint? symphony X? oh give me a break, what about jazz/fusion bands then (or even Zeppelin songs to get into rock) ? i admitall members of that band are great musicians but maybe they got too many classical influences to sound real progressive..anyway its just my opinion.. Through the looking glass is an awesome song though..if only it didnt remind me of DT! also got Psychotic Waltz "a social grace" (debute)..they are quite interesting mostly becoz they released this stuff back in 1990..check 'em out.. bruce dickinson's new album isnt as good as the last one ("accident of birth that is) but it has better production..and well it kicks butt as well :) eventually i got "Age of Impact"..gee! (thats all i can see, prog metal at its peak!if only it had some more catchy vocal lines..)

There *is* some very contrapuntal music in Symphony X's material, listen to some of the more epic pieces like tDWoT and TtLG, and you'll find extremely good voice-leading there. And they can sound extremely progressive in those pieces too. Everything is well structured too; no changing time signature just for the sake of it, and the sections are bridged together well. Also, there was someone commenting a while back, and saying that their song writing was bad. Now that is just completely unfounded; listen to the verse sections in the first part of TtLG, you'll find places where they've appropriately shortened or lengthened bars by a few beats to make the vocal melodies stronger.

TtLG reminds you of DT? No DT comes to my mind.

    Hi,

just returned from my 3 week vacation in the US som days ago, found, = like, eleventeen Ytsejams in my box (as usual...)

Became totally americanized, donuts and all, but had a great time. = Including the DT/DP/ELP show at the Universal Amphitheatre. Met a guy = working at a restaurant at the place, he made a remark on my Ytsejam = shirt, said DT was his fave band, and he didn't know they were playing = right there, that night!!! Hello!?! No, I'm sorry, have you joined the = Ytsejam yet? In that case, mail me!

All in all, very cool. Good shopping in NY, I found the shop Other = Music (near Astor Place I believe) to be a great source for strange = music, Revolution Records was pretty cool for LP:s... found first = pressings of Todd Rundgren's Utopia and Steely Dan's Aja (mint = condition)... for $3 each!!! The instrument stores at 42nd Street + Matt = Umanov Guitars in Greenwich VIllage was definitely also very very good. = Will be back sometime this winter I think. Couldn't stand living in NY = though, with wanting to see, something like, 2-3 shows, a night! Man, do = everyone play there all di taim? How do you afford it?

For the DTC: Mark Bredius posted this URL and said it was funny... = well, it won't compute, you just get a "event not found" or something = like that. What's up?

    = http://www.harmony-central.com/cgi-bin/show-event.pl?id=3D421&date=3D7300= 30

Could you post the correct one?

Hi everyone, I've got a question for those who partake in the recording of live performances, legal ones of course. ;-) Anyway, I was thinking about maybe getting a minidisc recorder and was wondering what you all thought about them. Which kind should I get, which type of microphone should I buy, where should I stand, and all other types of questions I could really use answers too... So if anyone is willing to spend a few minutes just answering my questions, I'd be most grateful. (also...how much for this whole thing?....how do you hide it so you don't get caught at those "legal" recording sessions?...what happens if you do happen to be caught?) Again, anyone with any info, please write to me. Thanks a lot!

    Scott.
