I read the thread on them a while back, and didn't really think much more about them until yesterday. There was a film on yesterday, Risky Business, which I first saw when I was about 5 or 6 (yeah, OK, I may not have understood it then). When I saw it then, one thing stayed with me, and that was the film score. I thought the scorer's interpretation was amazing.

Well, anyway, I turned on the TV yesterday to see the words on the screen: 'Music composed and performed by Tangerine Dream'. I immediately remembered the discussion on the Jam.

Can anyone recommend which CD to get first?

Are their CDs anything like that film score?

PLEASE REPLY BY PRIVATE E-MAIL, SINCE I AM CURRENTLY TEMPORARILY UNSUBSCRIBED.

I think that if anyone has paid a visit to this link: http://syrinx.yyz.com/HTML/rushhof.html should do so. Let's all help Rush get what they deserve, and who knows maybe some day in the long awaited future DT might get there too.

Wooohooo! Finally someone who defends this album! :) Just a reason enough to bother the jam again after a while! Sorry folks, coudn't help it this time.

    > Anybody agree/ disagree? > > Later, > - Joe D.

    I TOTALLY agree buddy! ;)

Yep, it's true that person must like bluesy music to like this CD. And it's AWESOME

I mean c'mon, how can possibly someone compare this album woith Crystal Planet? IMHO, this is far, far worst Satriani albunm. And I really love Satriani and have albums albums! When I first heard the title (Crystal Planet) I thougth "Woow, what can this be, sounds so science-fiction!" I really expected some mind-blowing new sound from Satch. And then ... :(

I found NONE stuff in this album that can make me become really into the music. Like a cliche album done according some written Satch compositionary rules. It IS Satch sound but a lousy one.

While Joe Satriani album is so full of sounds, cool effects and tones and SO MUCH FEELING in the solos. As I would say, very tasty album! :) And it also sound SO joyful, isn't it? There's some happy mood floating all aorund this album! :) Definitely an album with which you can tap, sing, snap fingers, shout, jump ... :) It's just ... moody!

    > I know all the ugly > stuff said about this disc is because it's so > radically different than Satch's normal fare, > > Ok........ that's all I have to say.

Thanks God it's so radically different than his other stuff. We don't need old Satch sound wrapped in new. We already know it AND love it! Now we expect something new. And this album seems like he did just for fun.

    > but I'm willing to bet that anybody who > digs blues at all thinks that this is a great CD!

I dig blues and I'm proud to say it. BLUES RULZ! :)

And finally, no flame war intended, I just support Joe. ;)

Hey, I usually don't follow up my own reviews because I like to stick to my guns on my opinions but this is a special case. I've listened to Tyranny a few more times and I'd have to say my initial review was way off base. I maintain that Shadow Gallery stick to their basic Carved in Stone sound on this disc. However, if Carved in Stone were their WDADU, then this disc is their I&W. It's really that much better. The songs and the overall atmosphere are totally engaging. The trick to listening to this disc is to let yourself get captured by all those "cheesy" choruses and rock opera lyrics. Suddenly all that cheese turns into beautiful music if you listen to it with the right mindset. The instrumental sections are technically on a level with DT except these guys definitely have a sound of their own now after a few cds. This is probably the best prog-metal album I've gotten since I got Angra's Holy Land and Superior's Behind a couple years back. Definitely the best on Magna Carta so far and up there with the best of all time...

I'm not a musician, but maybe their drop-D tuning has something to do with it not sounding conventional... but then again, I don't know...

Vai has NEVER been in Savatage, the bands he was in are Zappa, Alcatraz, David Lee Roth and Whitesnake, as well as working with Ozzy on a bunch of tracks that were eventually scrapped for Ozmosis (I believe they kept 1 track on the release). If you consider the G3 tour to be a band, then he was in that too, but never Savatage.

The one track they kept was 'My Little Man,' by far the worst song on that album. Nothing else is even close.

Well, they're a band, they have some albums, of which The Edge is definitaly worth checking out... They call themselves 'Beyond Progressive', although I think it's dumb when a band tries to categorize themselves... To call yourself BEYOND Progressive sounds a bit arrogant too, although The Edge still is a fine effort.

I know you said reply privatly, but I think the world needs to hear this. I think that Genesis (Gabriel era) was one of the most influential progressive bands of that time. No Genesis album before the self title (with Phil Collins) was released in the US, but you'll see Genesis or PG sited on numerous DT albums, and a lot of others. PG's mentioned on LTE as well. Granted, early Genesis' progressive music was 'pure' progressive, and didn't have that much of a metal sound to it (duh, metal wasn't around in 1969). But if you appreciate _good_ music, their albums rule. A Trick of the Tail was actually the first album produced with Collins as the lead singer, but the PG era ones are a billion times better. Phil was (is) a pop singer, and that's why when he took over, Genesis became more popular. Check out _The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway_ or _Foxtrot_, great works right there.

Oh, and I just picked up LTE, and it lives up to the hype. Really.

All I can say is "WOW!" I just got Royal Hunt's Moving Target album. Damn this is some of the best shit I have heard in quite a while. This is one of the best neo-classical/prog-metal albums to come out in what seems like forever. All of the instuments sound really good and D.C. Cooper's voice is really good.

On the other hand I have to recommend to everyone not to get Tempest's "Turn of the Wheel." In the Magna Carta catalog they made it sound pretty cool. "Celtic and Norwegian traditional music w/ progressive R&R. Intensity is Tempest's trademark." Well folks that couldn't be further from the truth. What it really sounds like is straight Celtic folk music raped to the point that it sounds like modern commercial bullshit. As far as the prog-rock thing goes, I found no evidence of it hear. Intensity?!? I have had more intensity taking a shit than this record claims to have musically.
