Whoa! Hey! You managed to succeed in getting a DT song played at a High
School dance! NOW we're making some real prog - gress! It should be only a
matter of days before major concert venues like Madison Square Garden start
calling and demanding that DT headline a show. Fantastic! "Hollow Years"
could be the next "Never Say Goodbye" or "Open Arms"! For your heroic and
self-less deed of propelling DT's music to new heights of fame and glory, I
hearby dub you King of the 'Jam.

Rogerio very informatively wrote (concerning audio extraction on live discs): >My drive had this problem until I upgraded its firmware -- if your >drive doesn't have upgradable memory and you notice these extraction >problems, then you're stuck.

My drive had this problem while I was using Adaptec's Easy CD Creator. Apparently the problem can be "fixed" by more intelligent software. The program I am now using is CDRWIN (www.goldenhawk.com). It solved the problem. Check out section 4-19 of the CDR FAQ for more details on the cause of this problem (a variable length pre-gap).

    >if they differ, then your drive isn't that good to >copy audio at the speed you tried; try extracting audio at lower speeds.

Another thing to try is enabling "jitter correction" if you have the optioin in your extraction software. Check section 2-15 of the CDR FAQ for more details on this problem..

Someone earlier asked for a review of this CD, which btw is called BIOMECH. Here comes one.

This CD is tied (with LTE and Superior's YOUnique) in 1st place for CDs I've bought so far this year. The CD is quite diverse stylistically and features a lot of kewl production work (background voices in parts, tastefully-used samples, etc.) Devin self-produced this CD and played guitar and keys on it as well as voice. --And what a voice! We all know Devin's one of the best screamers alive today (check out Strapping Young Lad if you dare), but on this CD he tones down and his vocals range from soft and exquisite to hard and incredibly emotional -- but never grate on my ears.

I've been playing "Regulator," track 9 from BIOMECH, regularly on WREK-FM here in Atlanta as part of our weekly mmmmmetal show, WREKage (10 pm - 2 am Fri-Sat) as well as during my Ytseradio shows at midnight Sunday and Tuesday. By far the reactions have been sharply positive. WREKage itself is a show where the lightest thing we might play on a normal evening is, say, Fear Factory or Slayer -- and yet we continue to get phone calls after we play "Regulator" wondering who the band was, where the CD can be obtained, etc. I've lost track of the number of my friends who have heard this and expressed their appreciation (one was dragging his friends up to our hotel room at Dragon*Con and playing them the CD on my boombox).

"Regulator" is the hardest song overall on BIOMECH, but it isn't my single favorite. Songs like "Funeral," written by Devin for a friend who died and with a kewl groove beat, are also up there, as well as "The Death of Music" (soft, but with incredibly emotive vocals), "Seventh Wave," "Sister" (very nice guitar/keys combo), etc.

You asked if this is progressive. -I- think it's prog, but not the wank-fest type of prog. Rather, the diversity of styles from one man's vision gives it prog status. Devin self-financed this gem with $60,000 of his own money ("Hmm, buy a house, or make a CD? Buy a house or make a CD? --Trailers are okay to live in....") which, to me, makes the CD extra-special.

I'd offer to buy back the CD from anyone who bought it based on this recommendation and didn't like it, but I'm not even sure where you can get it in the first place. I got my copy through Matt "M-Bone" Schnoor on the #ytsejam channel. Devin's private label is HevyDevy Records and their website is, I think, htp://members.home.net/hevydevy. Email address is hevydevy@home.com (but they're having problems with it right now).

Well, anyway, that's my 'short' review. :)

    Greetings, people.

I happened to see a man, disappointed over the fact that ACOS only has 471 points or whatever, when there is 3600 points to be given from the jammers.

Well, I have mixed feelings for this guy... I mean, is he trying to force us to like ACOS better than any song on the planet? Adolf Hitler revival?

I live in a democracy, and I have learned that one should be honest in how one vote - always pushing your *own* opinion forward, not just follow everyone else. I would NEVER give ACOS my vote just because it's DT and there's an organization behind giving the song a big score. NEVER. I am against this kind of organized voting, for it is not clear that how you're told to vote represents your own opinion, right?

So, I refuse to vote "just because". But, I tell you, I would not give ACOS 3 points, not even 2, not even 1 single point, even if this wasn't organized - because I don't like ACOS. Definitely NOT my song of the millennium. Not even my favourite DT song. Far from.

If you don't like ACOS best of all, don't vote for it - you'll lie, and the whole survey is useless (although I guess it's ruined already). On the other hand, if you DO have ACOS as your song of the millennium, don't dare to hesitate - go vote for it!

    Why would you care,

owaroo mush ? I remember those good ole days of ECT followed quickly by the Tube. And Rock School ! Wow, I can still remember the corny drummer doing his paradiddles ;-)

Enough of the reminiscing, anybody (Roger B. ?) have any recommendations for software to copy 'live' CDs. I'm using Gear at the moment and it puts the two second gap in between tracks which sort of defeats the object. I've picked up a few demos - Nero, CDRWin - any recommendations ?

Just be on the lookout for posts about how lame, repetative and uninspired Rudess's's's'' playing is, then you'll know it's been released :)

What's amazing is how one can criticize apart a (any) performance, without taking into account how little time was spent together jamming (let alone the amount of time the CD was produced in). I can only imagine this one being better than the first release.

Questions: On "Chris and Kevin's Excellent Adventure," is it Tony trying to count out the beat? Is Mike laughing at him? Did they invite Myung in to do the whistling? How many arms does Mike have, again? :)

Yeah, I completely agree with Lisa Marie. The best place to start with Vanden Plas (especially if you're into prog) is "the god thing", as IMO it is one of the best prog/metal CDs of the last 5 years. "Color temple" is also very good, but very different, as it is closer to AOR metal albeit several prog touches. Yet such VP classics as "father" and "how many tears" are there. Also, there is an acoustic album "accust", with remakes of "color temple" songs + covers, and it's very good too. To summarize, my VP prefference list goes as follows: - The God Thing - Accust - Color Temple. For "the god thing" try looking at impulse records. Last time I checked they've had for a rather reasonable price. For the other two, I would suggest looking in European online stores, such CDEurope, as they will most likely be cheaper there. That's it; hope that helps, Felix.

I don't see this as a problem. The newer computers come with a DVD-player as standard, and DVD-players can read audio cd's without any problem. The real problem lies with the software. For example, Microsoft has a habit of releasing software that won't be compatible with the next upgrade of their own operating system. A lot of stuff that was re-written for Win95 won't be able to run on Win98, so it has to be re-written again, meaning everyone who bought the Win95 version who's upgraded his system to Win98 can now go out and buy the new Win98 version when it's released. Ever wonder how old Bill got to be so fuckin' rich?

    >Otherwise much money is wasted. Similar to the problem of US standard of >video signal. I heard that it's definitely weaker than European but >replacing all your VCRs would cost ALOT and so it just stays the same >(don't know for sure, don't jump in my trout for this!)

Money is meant to be wasted :^) Seriously, yes the NTSC signal is weaker than PAL or SECAM, but some videos have multi-system capability, so even that shouldn't be a problem. Then again, DVD will replace VCR's as we know them, and it won't take as long as it did for CD-players to replace turntables. I mean, look at the possibilities (went to a demo of some Compaq machines with built-in DVD yesterday, so this stuff is still fresh in my memory), DVD can hold 4 straight hours of video, along with sound, and speech in ten languages, including subtitles. This also cuts down production costs, because now they can release the same disc in about twenty different countries, where the user selects what language he/she wants to hear, or if he/she wants subtitles or not.

    >But for the future humanity definitely must find a way to globalize >things, make them according one single standard. Otherwise we can't talk >about unification, right?

See above for technical details, we're getting there. Now, getting people to unify, that's a whole different story. Personally, I don't think it'll ever happen, there's just too much of a "me me me" attitude among people, like it has always been. And I'm not even sure if I like that idea. Think about it, if Hanson and the Spice Girls were prog, what would we DT fans have to bitch and moan about? 8-)

In the year 2020 we won't need computers at home, we'll have a chip in our head which will let us connect directly to online sources, with immediate access to any kind of info we need, be it music, documents or whatever. Haven't you read ANY of William Gibson's books? 8-)
