    Hello,
Chris Isaak: Speak of the Devil. My early frontrunner for best CD of the
year. Since live CDs typically don't impress me, I doubt DT will usurp this
position. In trying to think back to other new releases from this year, I
can't think of one other CD that has received serious rotation in my
player. I can't get this one OUT.
One big monkey in Chris Merlo's basement typed:

    >Remember when people who got their hands on this kind of
    >thing used to start a tape tree? *sigh*

I do remember. And I would be more than happy to buy a copy of this and
tape it for anyone who is willing to give me some stuff in return. Nowadays
I have to resort to buying new material to get trades in return. It
downright sucks. But we've been down that road, haven't we? Speaking of
which- SWIFTY!!!!! Tape Swap this year? If you don't want to do it, I will!
And right after voting for ACOS, someone spewed:

    >How do Garth Brooks, Bryan Adams, bloody HANSON, A-Ha
    > and others get on the list before the Beatles?!?!?!

Umm... The same way DT did: by having rabid fans who vote for songs without
regard to influence and primacy. I'd vote for Joe Satriani's Baroque, but I
don't believe in voting, for anything under any circumstances. :P
And did anyone else hear about the stink some animal rights group put up
over John Randle's Nike/NFL ad? I love animals, but boy some people really
    need to get lives...

Stodgers marvels at the wonders of human nature...

    Hey Jammers,

Flipping through the latest copy of Guitar Magazine, I noticed a
review of both Explorer's Club AoI and Vital Tech Tones. AoI got a
good review and it's all summed up by "..Petucci and Murphy save AoI
from collapsing under the weight of long-winded virtuosity by punching
in blazing solos that confirm prog rock is alive and well."

As for the Vital Tech Tones review, it is definately awsome. I
bought this cd last week and i must URGE, BEG, PLEAD, you to go out
and but this if you haven't. 3 AMAZING musicians playing as tight
as...well...tight! "this is one of the most explosively
improvisational records in recent memory" says Guitar. <drool> says
    me.

Then the best part of the mag, turn 2 pages after these two revies
and POW! An almost full page ad for OiaL and 5YiaL. the majesty symbol
never looked so good! it also give a web address:

    > TWO thousand monkeys in D-Man's basement typed: > > A thousand monkeys in Joe DeAngelo's basement typed: > Hey! At least there's only ONE thousand monkeys in my basement...... > so > there! Well since we're on the subject of monkeys I thought I would post a very funny story about them. It's quite possibly one of the funniest things I've ever read. I hope you agree. Trevor

    I like Monkeys

The pet store was selling them for five cents a piece. I thought this was odd since they were normally a couple thousand. I decided not to look a gift horse in the mouth so I bought 200 of them. I like monkeys.

I took my 200 monkeys home. I have a big car. I let one of them drive. His name was Sigmund. He was retarded. In fact, none of them were really bright. They kept punching themselves in the genitals. I laughed. They punched me in the genitals. I stopped laughing.

I herded them into my room. They didn't adapt very well to their new environment. They would screech and hurl themselves off the couch at high speeds and slam into the wall. Although humorous at first, the spectacle lost its novelty halfway into it's third hour.

Two hours later I found out why all the monkeys were so inexpensive; they all died. No apparent reason. They all just sort of dropped dead. Kinda like when you buy a goldfish and it dies five hours later. God damn cheap monkeys.

I didn't know what to do. There were 200 dead monkeys lying all over my room; on the bed, in the dresser, hanging from my bookcase. It looked like I had 200 throw rugs. I tried to flush one down the toilet. It didn't work. It got stuck. Then I had one dead, wet monkey and one hundred ninety-nine dead, dry monkeys.

I tried to pretend that they were just stuffed animals. That worked for awhile, that is until they began to decompose. It started to smell real bad.

I had to pee but there was a dead monkey in my toilet and I didn't want to call a plumber. I was embarrassed.

I tried to slow down the decomposition by freezing them. Unfortunately there was only enough room for two at a time, so I had to change them every 30 seconds. I also had to eat all the food in the freezer so it didn't go bad.

I tried to burn them, but little did I know that my bed was flammable. I had to extinguish the fire.

Then I had one dead, wet monkey in my toilet, two dead, frozen monkeys in my freezer, and one hundred ninety-seven dead, charred monkeys in a pile on my bed, The odor wasn't improving.

I became agitated at my inability to dispose of the dead monkeys and I really had to use the bathroom. So I went and severely beat one of the monkeys. I felt better.

I tried throwing them away but the garbage man said the city was not allowed to dispose of charred primates. I told him I had a wet one. He couldn't take it either. I didn't bother asking about the frozen ones.

I finally arrived at a solution. I gave them out as Christmas gifts. My friends didn't quite know what to say. They pretended to like them, but I could tell they were lying. Ingrates. So I punched them in the genitals.

    I like monkeys.

A few hours ago!? That may be the problem. It took quite awhile for Symphony X to really sink in for me, then I loved it. You mentioned that the guitar is similar to Yngwie, and I used to be a big Yngwie fan, so I always liked the SX guitar. I also like the keyboards, but the vocals are what really makes Symphony X great. Keep listening, and it may start to grow on you.

(Hell, I had DT - I&W for a year before it really struck me how good it was...)

I have to agree - I've not been here long and I've been lucky enough to witness Page and Plant at Birmingham, but apart from Pearl Jam (yes I admit it, I like them - I just didn't get the chance to go as they sold out in about ten minutes), there really isn't much interest from alot of bands to come down here. I have found a number of people into hard rock/metal, who are desperate to see some good bands, it's not all Country (sp?) and Western down here.

I wanna share with you a weird discussion I had with a friend. We listened DT for the first time in his house, introduced by a guy who came then and brought I&W tape. So, my intro point is that now we're both DT fans, some more, some less, but anyway DT FANS. Now on with the story.

These days he reacts quite negative on many topics and here's the one:

"I just hate this kinda bands who play covers 'n stuff! And what's that stupidity of titling an album according old Talking Heads song? Why they emphasize SO MUCH playing covers? Can't they make their own good music?"

Later he said that he would not buy the live DT album.

    ?????????????

Personally, I see nothing bad in DT playing covers and foolin' around with adding excerpts of famous songs while playing live. I LOVE it! Why not? They all listened this music while younger and while learning playing so it's:

    1) A PLEASURE playing your fave stuff 2) Paying tribute to those bands

Thos songs they play happens to be songs I also listened/listen and are some of my fave music. So it's a bonus reason to enjoy it! Which Zeppelin fan would stay calm listening Mike just before end of a song starts drumming "Moby Dick"?? ;) Woohooo, GREAT!

I also read few reviews on DT music that they sound too much like this or that old band. I listen ALOT old music and don't find SO many similarities. True, I don't know Rush that much, but what I heard, I can't say that DT just copy them. Nonsense. IMO, DT sound is something new and revolutionary in today's music. And using bits and pieces from some older music is not a sin, it's natural. As Brian May says in his guitar school video: "Nobody creates in vacuum!" This is very true! You pick up and learn playing an instrument; No matter what kinda music you wanna compose consciously, un-consciously you're influenced by your musical background, the sound you liked in other bands. Ultimately, every first composing step is kinda coping which later turns into originality. After all, while you were learning playing the guitar, you were practicing on ripping off Jimmy Page, or Van Halen, Blackmore, DiMeola etc. Everybody do that!

And the stuff with DT's title of the live album: it's cool! Coping, cheating means, IMHO, somehting you take and try to hide, presenting it's your own. But in this case I see it as cool! DT KNOWS that everyone knows this is TH song title. So what's the big deal? It's cool title for live album.

Anyone has comments on this? Agrees? Disagrees? Wanna add something?

    CyberDuke
