Rule of thumb: Don't open attachments unless it's from someone you know.
The email itself won't harm you, just anything attached will. So far,
anyway. I won't even open attachments from people I know unless they let me
know what it is first. It's just a nice way to keep shit from wreaking hell
on your machine. AFAIK, things that are generally safe to open are pictures
(gif, jpg, bmp), sound files (mp3, wav, ra), and text files (txt only).
Word and Excel documents can have imbedded macros that can usurp your
machine and opening executable files (.exe) are simply requests for trouble.
    (generally).

Trying to make the internet a nicer place to waste time,

If you guys don't mind the bass subject to continue..... The only Huges and Kettner gear that I have dealt with is guitar stuff that some of my friends have. It has proven to be solid and reliable. I haven't seen the bass gear up close yet. I have had a lot of luck with a G-K 800 with a SWR 4x10 cab. Trace Elliot stuff is nice too. Erik

Well, actually, you can vote 5 times per day PER IP ADDRESS. Hang up, dial again, vote 5 more times. Move to a different machine in the lab, vote 5 more times. I've voted 20 times already today just to prove my theory.

I can't get James to the top by myself, but if just 5% of the jam took a few minutes each time they read e-mail, we'd give James 12000 votes by the end of the month. That should be enough to beat *anybody*.

So get cracking all you jammers. Vote the Chicago way, early and often.

Gordian Knot is NOT a shredfest. Of course there are a couple quick lead passages and things, but everything is very tasteful - more of a team effort, with very little individuality in the soloing. I was blown away, not by the technicality of it, but by its perfection. Go buy it (from Laser's Edge)... :)

P.S. How cool is that - 2 EOJ's in a row! Too bad I didn't have anything important to say...

<<<<< I donwloaded an MP3 of Gordian Knot's Reflections and I was well-impressed. It was tastefully constructed, nice acoustic guitar solo, restrained basswork and no "We can shred and here's an example of us doing so". BUT, I

hear the remaining tracks on the album are madness altogether. Is this true? Would someone mind uploading an MP3 onto a server and giving me the URL?

Cross-posting this to the Dream Theater list. There might be a few interested in this :) Sorry to any folk on the Thoughts list about the lack of Spock's Beard content, delete it if you must. It's the third RPM 'clinic' I've seen, but I'm still coming down from yesterday... I promise I'll post an extensive review of my thoughts on Day For Night when I can find the words :)

    Adam Sanford wrote (on Thoughts):

    > Yes and no about Rudess joining... I think Liquid Tension Experiment was > certainly a harbinger of things to come, which is great, but Dream Theater > has given up on the Images and Words sound, independent of Moore leaving.

"Given up" is a little strong, IMO. Just because you don't hear it as much (or even at all) on an album, doesn't mean it's gone anywhere. Perhaps it was just taking a little nap, while the guys got into other things, you know, that 'explore the boundaries' thang? ;)

Just thought I'd mention I saw Rudess/Morgenstein yesterday at Berklee in a room that held maybe 100 people. It was packed out the door. Hung out with several familiar faces (Jeremy, Matt, Gabriela, Nick, Kevin, John) and met some (Art, Wild Bill) who up to that point I had only known by their Internet addresses. There's nothing like seeing some kick ass music and when looking over at a face that you hardly know, there's this 'connection' 'cuz you both know the music so well.

Nick (bogie on IRC) has at least one sample up with more to follow, at http://dreamtheater.mit.edu/ Just go into the audio section, and after registering (it's free, you shall do it......NOW! :), you can check the sounds out. Hopefully, Nick will put up Rod's routine where he mentions Beavis & Butthead and they love for bands like Winger :) MAJOR KUDOS to bogie for getting Over The Edge online literally a few hours after the gig!! About the only thing one could do to top it would be to have a live streaming broadcast ;)

Anyways, to address Adam's and probably many other's concerns about Jordan and the direction of DT's sounds as well as Jordan's sounds in general:

I asked Jordan about the future ("Hey Jordan, are you y2k compliant? :) On one of the new songs they did (Nightwish, I believe it's called, it ROCKS!), Jordan used some pretty PHAT analog synth type sounds. Naturally this caught my immediate attention. This was not from the pallete of Kurzweil sounds we're accustomed to hearing on LTE/RPM. This was the sound I think a lot of people are looking for from Jordan. A little nastier sound :) It didn't appear Jordan had any problem running with it either. He went from that relaxed, hangin' out, position and then he's just started beating the machine up. I noticed the support legs started moving as he's torn between respecting the instrument, pushing the groove envelope, and realizing that an inanimate object won't hate him if he breaks something :) He is tearing it up!!! He looks up every now and then (how he is able to do this while both hands are so busy is beyond me!) and has that Jordan grin on his face.

I mentioned how I've listened to most of his stuff (Speedway Blvd, Dregs, LTE, RPM, DT, his solo work). I touched on how I like that he brings a slightly different "sound" to each thing he does. To paraphrase, he went on to say that he, like many a guitarist (for example) will come into a band already with a "sound", it's part of who they are. But in each project he's quite distinctive in what he adds on top of that base, and it seems appropriate to the project. RPM is nothing at all like his solo work, and if you listen (pun intended) to it, you'll know what I mean.

After speaking with Jordan for a few minutes, I think it's quite safe to say that Dream Theater shall be approached no differently than any other thing he's done. He's a musician with a lot of respect for the art form and for other musicians. He's quite aware of what Dream Theater is a Progressive METAL band, not a Progressive FUSION band or whatever. To top it off, he did also mention something along the lines of liking that Images & Words "sound" and hopes to help bring some of its flavor back. No worries, Jordan is gonna be ALL OVER THIS :) This was meant to be...

So......maybe it is possible to have your cake and eat it, too? Bring back some of that sound you want without rehashing an I&W clone? Hmmmm.....

I did talk to Rod as well (DUH!). etween Rod, several others and myself there, I think all the usual questions were asked about Platypus, RPM, Dregs reuinion, etc. He's touring the western part of the US with "Jazz Is Dead" REAL SOON (details at http://www.mediusvision.com/rod/concert.html).

We get to talking about all the projects he's doing and being on the road all the time, between his playing/teaching/etc. I asked about Platypus possibly opening for DT, so Myung wouldn't have to move :) Then he comes out with something like "You know what would I'd like to see? Maybe RPM/LTE/Platypus/Dregs/DT show, you know like maybe at least a 5-6 hour weekend thing" Someone mentions "You mean like a Progfest?". The first thought I had when he said this was of how many others on this list would freak if this happened. Yeah, it's a dream, but it was just so cool to hear him start whipping off close to half a dozen kick ass bands (3 of which he's in) he'd like to see together in one day :)))

Jordan and Rod are just so damn hip!

    Peace, Jon

    Hi everyone

I've just found this strange news on the Dynamite Heavy Metal Site :

    >>Thursday, April 1, 1999

    Dream Theater studio update

It may be a real Change of Seasons for progressive metal kings Dream Theater when they release their new album this fall. "We're tired of all these other bands constantly ripping off our style," said drummer and band spokesman Mike Portnoy. "So what we've decided to do is, we're going to out-prog everyone else." Dream Theater's next disc, tentatively titled Hubris, will be their most musically and thematically ambitious offering yet. "Basically, we're taking important historical documents and putting them to music. So far we have Magna Carta and Treaty of Versailles (movement one), but we're also considering The Book of Genesis (abridged) and The Hawley-Smoot Tariff."
