rather silent from this quarter, what gives?

thought I'd pop in and drop a load or two.....as in declaring that if I
were to vote for the best SONGS (not albums, not lyrics but songs) to be
released in the past two years are, in no particular order
into the dream -- discipline, from the album "Unfolded Like Staircase"
Slilde -- goo goo dolls, from the album "Dizzy up the girl" and
Uninvited -- alanis morissette, from the city of angel soundtrack

this isn't meant to be an invitation to top whatever lists
instead, it's just something i came to realize over the past few
weeks.....and felt like sharing, because it was a pretty big shock to me
that in spite of dream theater, fates warning, and all these other prog
groups releasing albums/music/whatever within that time span
(1/1/97-now), two of my three fave song from that time period are from
artists who this list have and will again be slagging in the future.....

okay, the statue of limitations on pointlessness has expired, so I'll
leave you to your own aimless devices

How about, DREAM THEATER with Kevin Moore. :)

Well, I need to hear what Rudess is all about though.

It'd also be cool if Myung was more aggressive on his bass, like Les Claypool
    or something. :)

Hm. James LaBrie is cool and all. But I wonder what DT would sound like
with a singer with a deep voice.

HOLLYWOOD DESTROYING NATIONAL PARK IN THAILAND: Boycott 20th Century Fox movie "THE BEACH"

Dear Friends, On a recent trip to Thailand I discovered that 20th Century Fox is making a movie called "The Beach" on Phi Phi Leh Island, a treasured national park in Thailand. Portions of the film, starring Leonardo Di Caprio, (Titanic-fame) will be shot on Maya Beach on the island of Phi Phi Leh. This is one of the most beautiful, unspoiled islands in the Pacific and it is being destroyed to meet Hollywood's perception of paradise. The film company has already bulldozed large portions of the beach and removed much of the natural vegetation (Giant Milkweed, Sea Pandanus, Spider Lily and other beach grass) in order to widen the beach to accommodate a football scene. Fox plans to replace the native vegetation with 100 non-native coconut palms to create their "paradise." Local Thai activists feared that removing the natural vegetation would create serious erosion and they were right. The beach has already been eroded and now locals are very worried about how much of the beach and bay will remain after the monsoons. Phi Phi Leh island is supposed to be protected as a national park and is key to the local tourist economy. The Thai activists say that Thailand's Royal Forestry Department violated their own regulations and were bought off by 20th Century Fox who paid the goverment $4 million. Local activists are enraged that the government would cave in to Fox's demands and that their concerns were ignored. They are not opposed to filming on Maya Bay but want the island to be filmed as is. A lawsuit has been filed but an injunction to stop further destruction of the island was denied. The local Thai people have tried everything, from the courts to blockading the beach, to protect their island. Now they need our help. The only thing left is for the American public to take action and boycott the film. The Thai people point out that Americans would never allow Thai film makers to bulldoze Yellowstone or other US National Parks. Perhaps Hollywood will finally get the message that exploiting the environment and powerless people is unethical, especially for mere entertainment.

Please help my friends in Thailand by: 1) Passing this message on to everyone you know 2) signing the petition below 3) write a letter to producer Andrew McDonald telling him you will boycott the film unless 20th Century Fox stops destroying Maya Bay. The address is: Andrew MacDonald, Producer c/o Carol Sewell 10201 W. Pico Blvd. Building 89, Room 224 Los Angeles, CA 90035 or e-mail Fox at foxmovies@fox.com

Check out my web site of Maya Bay at: http:www.wildrockies.org/wve/

(Please sign the petition and forward to someone else. If your name is #50, #100, #150 and so on, please send the petition back to me at: mailto:bryony@wildrockies.org

PETITION: To: Andrew McDonald, Producer "The Beach" We, the undersigned, will not see your film "The Beach" and will encourage our friends and family to boycott the film unless you cease and desist from destroying Maya Bay by removing the native vegetation and planting coconut palms. Maya Bay is already a paradise and does not need Hollywood's unnecessary alterations.

it's true. Derek is in Wayne's World. you can see him stage a few times. and thanks the my 4-head VCR, i saw him in the dressing room. You have to pause and go frame by frame cause it's real quick. he's sitting in the chair right in front of wayne. I guess he did get the L.A. lifestyle going on that one.

    Hi guys

here is a quick review of Spock's Beard - Day For Night

Well, I must say Spock's Beard have made it once agian. Day For Night is a great album like the 3 other albums.

The style is a mix between "Beware Of Darkness" and "The Kindness" with some new and fresh sounds. The title track is a typical beard song. "Gibberish" is a great song in the terms of "Thoughts". The epic 20 min "Healing Colors Of The Sound" is really good, but I prefer songs like "Flow", "Time Has Come" or "The Wather".

Anway, IMO the best song on the album is "Crack The Big Sky" which is one of my favorite Beard songs ever. It's a 10 min prog song which has everthing. The awesome chours reminds me of "The Doorway". I love it.

I really liked "June" from "The Kindness.." but the wounderful new song "The Distance To The Sun" is just incredible. A beautifull 3 vocal ballade with some Pink Floyd influences. Just awesome.

Overall a great album and I'm sure most of you will enjoy it too.

P.S. The limited edition Europe version has a bonus track which is a cover song called "Hurt". It's a 70's hard rock song.

    Hey All

Just picked up Nightwish's Oceanborn couple of days ago. WOW this surely is one of the best releases, if not THE best of this year (and maybe of 1998 also). Tarja's vocals are just divine. Technically it's a perfect album, AND (and this is quite exceptional) it even moved me emotionally. Rhapsody-like, but more prog en less sympho IMO. Go get this stuff.

On another note: what is this Gordian Knot thing? I've heard alot of it, I know that it's not a shredfest, but what style is it then? And what albums do they have?

    Cheers

Okay, I barely dare ask this... For a rather long time now, it says in the faq that, covering the re-usable riff phenomenon, Erotomania is made up of riffs of other songs. Now ever since I read this (about 2 years ago), I tried and find those snippets that appear in other songs (well maybe not all the time 'ever since', but hey I surely took my time looking for them). Anyway, I (obviously) noticed the Silent Man melody line, but that's about it. At the risk of making an incredible fool of myself: could someone enlighten me on this one? Posting to the list is probably not necessary as most of you smart-asses already have found what I haven't, but any private mails are surely appreciated.

I'd heard that there was an error in this song on the new Garage Inc. release by Metallica, but it wasn't until today that I found it! I'm sure this has been documented somewhere, but I just thought I'd brag a little.

Just after 2:00 of track 5 on the second disc (Last Caress/Green Hell) you can plainly hear in the left channel someone accidentally toss in James just randomly shouting "Green Hell!" It does NOT belong there. Listen to it and you'll believe me. ;)

I'm thinking I'm right, but I know there's quite a few Metallicaphiles on the list that will know for sure. Again, I'm not claiming to have found anything NEW. It just was a rumor and nobody ever said exactly where it was. UNTIL NOW!!! ;)

    Enjoy scanning! Later!

no no, post to the list. i remember asking that question on irc and nobody knew what the faq writer was talking about (d-man didn't write that apparently) hehe. so i suspect a lot of people would be enlightened if someone who actually knows would point out the times and songs. moo.

You mean, you can't see Dream Theater doing a song about import tariffs? Perhaps with a tie-in to the high cost of CDs overseas. Dream Theater then is interviewed on Meet The Press, as Myung expounds on the US Federal Reserve, the state of the economy prior to the Great Depression and other pressing US issues, as a motivation for a DT song?
