whether he knew any release date for LTE2. He said
that it is schedule or May, 15th (USA!) I wonder if
anyone has detailed information or who could confirm
this
---------------
Magna Carta's sight says May 4 and John (at a clinic)
said that it'd be out sometime in June. So who knows!

I know I have some info somewhere about making the
bushings tighter. It's some technique that I read on
Vai's site. Putting nail polish on the bushing. I
thing the "Hard as Nails" brand. I try and find the
info and post it.

I am looking for anyone to jam with who plays Guitar, Keys, or Sings. I am a bassist and my brother is a drummer. Our last guitarist sold out so we need some more people for the band. We live down in San Diego. It isn't to serious yet, but we want to start writing songs and playing gigs wherever possible. I have a bunch of song ideas so far, just need some people to help expand them. Age should be from 13 to 20. We live near escondido. Hope some jammers are interested. We don't care what style fo prog you like as long as you have prog in mind.

OK Chris, I just started listening to Fates with this album. I admit that it was for Kevin Moore at first, but its reallt caught me. I was wondering, since you say your a long time fan, what album would be good to move onto next. What might I like, as a fan of this album?

I tried this nail polish thing once... it worked for about thirty seconds. Maybe I was using the wrong color? :) I let it dry overnight but it still just scraped right off. Oh well. Thanks for the tip, though, and I'm still interested in any other ideas. Maybe I'll try the nail polish thing again. -Clark

Not like I can say that there's really anything absolutely wrong with APSOG but I suspect that its hardly what Matheos envisioned it to be when he conceived it. Most likely due to budget concerns. I can only imagine that creating an epic piece of music that explores all the possibilities it holds would take enormous amounts of time and money.
here's whats wrong with APSOG: imho
1) it frustrates the hell outta me! - I hear lots of great possibilities that I think could have been explored and they're not. It sounds more like a sketch of the masterpiece it could have been. Atmospheres are created and then left behind. I suspect this is due to lack of time that constrained exploring tonal variety (see #2)
2) bad guitar sound!! - first thing I noticed right off the bat is that Matheos is using the same IRRITATING guitar tone that he's used on the last couple of albums at least. It has a nasty tendency to carry out those buzzing 5ths and its not the tone that bothers me so much its the sustain that it has. And in my opinion it sticks out like a sore thumb in some of the gentler parts of the cd where I know a sublter guitar tone would have set a much better compliment to the mood that was attempted. Kill the power chords too.... jeez!!!
3) ray alder !! - I'm sorry, I dont like his phrasing and his whiny voice.
4) that stupid picture of the brain under the umbrella!!! and whats with the sloppy airbrushing job? When I first got the cd I was embarrassed for the art directors, sloppy....
thats just the way i call it....

I guess its only fair to also say what I thought was nice about it too....
1) its experimental - its a band trying to take and interesting concept and trying to make it a reality, you gotta respect their effort.
2) great lyrics- matheos has a nice way of not beating you over the head with his point.
3) the first 2:00 of part 12.... WOW.
4) mark zonder/ kevin moore
5) any instrumental part that doesnt have distorted guitar :-)
thats all i can think of right now....

Hey, Maybe it's just me, but APSOG IMO is the best album to come out since Awake. It took me 6 months and two live Fates shows for it to sink in, but the album finally hit me one day, and I've loved it ever since. My recommendation would be to sit in a leather chair/couch in a dark room...Drink a Guiness and crank this CD. It's really effective on a rainy night :) Damn best "moody" CD I've ever heard, bar none :)

It is boring in some sections. Long and drawn-out and unneccesary, but when an album is as good as APSoG, you have to look past all of that, or you're missing out on some damn great music. My personal favorites are Parts 6, 9 and 11

A big hold-on-a-minute there, Clark. I think the problem you're experiencing is due to other mechanics of the trem. I haven't figured out how to fix this myself either, but I know that the shop that does it for me only has to fix it once in a blue moon, and I know they aren't inserting new bushings. I know EXACTLY the problem you're talking about, and I know EXACTLY what piece of plastic (2 of em) you're talking about. My RG550 is having this problem right now. I will try to make it into the shop this weekend and watch what they do (I seem to recall them using a screwdriver last time I watched, which was like a year ago). If someone on this list knows, or has a tech number for Ibeenhad, we should get this in the FAQ. :) Every Ibanshredder has had this problem. If you're wearing those things out every week A). You're hella-practicing, and B). You might consider finger vibrato and bends. :)

Date: Tue, 13 Apr 1999 02:20:10 -0500 From: Kevin Carmouche <khc@bellsouth.net> To: ytsejam@axnet.net Subject: APSOG and Derek, Kevin, and Jordan Message-ID: <4.1.19990413020344.00979be0@mail.msy.bellsouth.net>
interesting that someone said that Kevin is the most classically trained of the three keyboardists. Now, I'm not a great classically trained person, but my ear seems to think that Jordan is by far the most technical and "classical" of the three. Kevin was great in setting backgrounds and writing stuff, he is the guy I'd put in the middle. Derek, with his rock/fusion/jazz influences, was so different from both of them that I think alot of people hated him for that reason. I know alot of keyboard players love the ripping key-crasher who thunders out huge scales from one end of the piano to another. Nothing wrong with that, I'm a huge fan of Keith Emerson. The area where I find these type of players lack is alot of feeling, or "groove." Derek had this, he just dug in there and rocked...totally different type of keyboardist. What's such a shame is that he is put under such a bad scrutiny because #1: He replaced a beloved member, it'd be like if Neil Peart replaced Mike Portnoy, although Neil's a great drummer, Mike is so loved that may of us would hate Neil just for following Mike(may be a bad parrallel, but that's all I could think of at the moment...heh). #2: Derek is such a departure from Kevin, in terms of sounds and styles he used, people hated him for that. And now, Jordan, being a little closer to Kevin, alot of people feel alot more comfortable with things...#3:People hated Dereks image...truthfully, I could give a crap about image, I just care about the music that's being played, and I loved the music that Derek played.
As for the APSOG argument, let me say this, I know it's been said before, but I want to say it too...It is a mood piece, a long story wrapped around an ambient, moody atmosphere with recurring themes throughout. Now, for people who say this is "boring"...let me say I pity you, for anyone to be so surface as to call something like this boring...couldn't you come up with a bit better phrase??? APSOG is a "prog" work much like Mindcrime, in that it is a long thematic work built around a certain style. Others could probably say it a better way, but that's about all I can say this time of night when I'm about to fall asleep...heh. APSOG, and actually none of FW's stuff I've heard, is technically amazing, but the awesome songwriting of Jim Matheos, coupled with Ray Adler's vocals(which are second to Geoff Tate in style and purity) make for a great listen. Open up past the blazing chromatic scales and listen for other things that can be just as musical.....such as mood, songwriting, etc.

i'm sorry to interrupt your quite amusing QR flames. :) But our band is going to perform some DT songs the beginning of June (also a=20 20 minute mad-ley) and we would still need someone to sing. If there is=20 anyone who thinks he can sing quite OK (doesn't have to be LaBrie) and who=20 lives in the area of Duesseldorf, Germany can send a mail to me. It would be nice to at least have a singer for Hollow Years and Silent Man,=20 because they are not so interesting without a singer.

You should get the newer ones, 'The divine wings of tragedy' and 'Twilight in Olympus'. They can almost compete with I&W and Awake for best albums ever (together with Operation:Mindcrime)...
I only recently included SX and Nightwish into my musical awareness and it's an amazing feeling, like when you heard DT for the first time.

i just wanted to ask if some of you bass players could give me a clue on what JM is playing from 8:20-9:20 in LTL. He somehow copies the left hand of the keyboard adding some other cool stuff. I checked the bass-tab on UACM but it somehow doesn't fit. I would be very thankful, if you could at least give me a rough idea. Otherwise I'll have to listen it out myself *sigh*.

has anyone noticed that bands that normally write really heavy stuff tend to write cool concept (or at least concept-y) albums and then end them with a soft melodic piece? Fear Factory's Timelessness and Nevermore's Forever (heh even the titles are similar) come to mind. These songs aren't very, hmm, whats a good word... complete i guess - on their own but as the summation of the rest of the album i think they rock, and those two in specific i think are like the perfect way to end the CD (i'm sorta upset with the digipak version of obsolete which ends with timelessness then starts up with Gary Numan's Cars :). anyways, i'm now addicted to these type of, well basically, outros. Can anyone suggest any other CDs that have this type of thing? It would help if the rest of the CD is cool, too :) for example, i haven't heard QR's O:M. does this cd do that? if so that might be another incentive to finally get me to go buy it :) thanks. moo.
