Man, there are a shitload.....some of the top of my head could be, from an
    80's/early 90's standpoint:

    High Enough - Damn Yankees
That one by Saigon Kick, damn I can't remember the name of it.
I Remember You - Skid Row
In a Darkened Room - Skid Row
    Quicksand Jesus - Skid Row
    Is This Love - Whitesnake
    I Saw Red - Warrant
The other one on the Cherry Pie album
Dallabnikufesin (N.F.B.) Anthrax (off of Killer B's) - my personal fave
Every Rose Has Its Thorn - Poison
    etc., etc., ad infinitum.....

Actually, I think there's a double CD set called Rock Ballads out there.
Watch TV at around 2 in the morning, and the commercial is bound to come
    up.......

O:M ends with Eyes of A Stranger which is definitely not a soft, melodic
song, but does kick a lot of ass and is an awesome finale for the album.
Sort of brings the story full circle. Try anything by Savatage. Pretty
much all their albums are concept albums, and they generally end with
killer ballads. You might like Tyranny by Shadow Gallery as well.

wow, you mean that you've had to take it in to the shop twice this
    year already? :)

about the latest scientific theories on the DT keyboard
position....Jordan as a happy medium between Kevin and
Derek.....hmmm, maybe it's like a pendulum, on one hand you had the
too moody guy, then you got the too rock and roll personified guy,
now you got Jordan Rudess, and maybe five more keyboardists down the
road, Dream Theater will end up with the perfect guy for that spot in
    this particular band......

of course, five keyboardist changes down the road Melody's and Max's
and Kiara's (that's petrucci's kid's name, right?) kids will just
about be ready to step into their grandparent's places in what will
at that time be the rock band with the most longevity ever, having
just passed the stunning 62 year mark achieved first by the Rolling
    Stones......

    it could happen

    or not

The problem with this part is that John Petrucci is soloing so loud
that is almost impossible to hear John Myung's bass. I know what you
mean, but I'll give it a second try...

I think that's the only part in I&W that I don't really know what he's
doing besides the 4:30-4:43 part of Metropolis. That one is tapping

    Hey all...
I don't know what it was... but I stepped out of the shower.. and it hit
me... No.. it wasn't the plans for the flux capacitor... but why Derek is no
longer in Dream Theater and why he wasn't upset about it.
Its so simple. The DS/Dream Theater split was amicable on both parts
because Derek was looking to become more popular and wasn't truly used to
working with a band as well, low key as DT. Derek was used to playing with
KISS and AC etc... DT wasn't used to playing with someone whose intrests
include Elton John. So, when the opportunity to have Jordan finally join
the band came along.. They jumped at it. At the same time, Derek says
"Finally!" I won't feel bad about leaving. They have a replacement and I
can go off and play with another more popular act.. or in this case...finish
    his solo project.

who has Myung's instructional video can make you a copy or scan you a copy of that
exact part on the booklet.. or better yet..make you a copy of the video. .. He

Hey, check the prog musicians forum if you want to start or join a
band. That's also a good place for bands that need musicians.

Here's the address to the forum:

..And just like Jerry Maguire and his "vision", everyone in the
office is looking at you thinking that you are a freak. :)

DT is certainly used to playing with someone whose interests
include Elton John. Their names are Kevin Moore and John
Petrucci - have you heard of them? If you think that the Elton
John covers that are found on the A Change of Seasons EP
(the bonus Uncovered material) were there because of Derek,
think again. Dream Theater, at their only all-instrumental show
w/o a vocalist back in 1990, performed a big medley of cover
songs which was basically the frame work for the "Big Medley"
at the end of the ACOS EP. But, what was the first track they
played in their 1990 medley? That's right - Funeral For a Friend
by Elton John. So, certainly, this was not a reason for Derek's
    departure.

I would go into more of the Moore/Sherinian/Rudess discussion
and throw my opinions out there why Sherinian was replaced, but
the answer seems pretty obvious. Rudess is a better fit for the
band in terms of the direction they want to go. Plain and simple.
The only thing I fear is that we'll get an album full of JP/JR
riffs that won't lend much to writing "songs". I liked the more
focused direction DT took with FII in terms of songwriting. But,
with Derek gone, that may be gone too.

Definitely. Jordan played classical music for most of his life, according to his bio. The guy was trained at Julliard which is one of the most prestigious classical music schools in the world. He also states in an interview somewhere, I believe anyway, that classical music is the basic foundation for all his writing.

The masters of the power ballad, imo anyway, would have to be Manowar. Check out songs like Heart of Steel, Master of the Wind, or Courage.

I went to the Billy Joel show last night here in good ol' Phoenix (AWA), and I witnessed a spectacle which so surprised me I nearly soiled myself (*loose* movie reference - any takers?)... Billy Joel, band and all, playing "Highway to Hell" (AC/DC)! The guitar tech/roadie (AKA "Chainsaw") sang - it was fucking hilarious!! Anyway, he also played "Purple Haze" (it rocked) and some cursed Beach Boys and Elvis tunes (I guess it would've rocked if that did it for me)....
