Regarding power ballads, if thats the correct pc term,
lest not us forget as such:
QR (No Sanctuary, London, I Will Remember, The Lady Wore Black)
FAtes (Isalnds in the Stream, APSOG 9, Chasing Time, The Road Goes on Forever)
Enchant (Acquaintance)
Rush (Losing It, Different Strings, Tears)
Lethal (Born, Now - both from the GREAT POISON SEED CD)
and more, but thats all I can thing of right now.
Interestingly enough, I wouldn't really consider many DT
songs as being actualy ballads, power-ballads, or gutter-ballets.
Closest is probably "Eve" (great) or "Silent Man" or Anna Lee (BOTH boring)
Oh well. I'm waiting for the next COAL CHAMBER ballad cover cd....

It's a matter of preference I guess. I love the first 4 minutes and
the last 2 minutes, but at times, I'll skip over the solos because
I don't feel like listening to them. And, a well written song
should never make you want to do that. Each part of the song
should lend something to the entire piece instead of just
sitting their on its own. >>
I think, personaly, if that was the only song I had heard off that
album, I woulda bought it in a second if I wasnt already a HUGE DT fan. That
song is AMAZING. Every piece of it is integral...I don't see how you could
remove any bit of the song and still think it may work. If it bores
you...its not for you

I saw the post about the whammy bar problems, and I'm not sure if my
problem is the same thing, so if it is, tell me, if it isn't, please
tell me how to fix this problem. Ok, here's my problem... Ya know the
nut that screws into the bridge? - the nut that you screw your bar
into? Well, when I screw the bar in, it grips the nut stronger than the
nut grips the bridge and when I go to unscrew the bar and put the guitar
back in my case, the nut comes out of the bridge attached to the bar and
it's a real bitch to seperate the nut from the bar. I NEED HELP! How
do I make this not happen?

Funny that you mention that. En route to Salt Lake City last weekend my
friend (the one who got me into DT who doesn't really listen to them
anymore) popped in my DT mix disc for shits and giggles. We made it through
the CD for the most part with no complaints except for two parts... And
that ToT midsection was one of them. He just skipped past that one.
Strange how LtL doesn't bother him though. Maybe it's because he's familiar
with it (I don't think he's ever heard FII, really). The other complaint
was the end of The Way It Used To Be. Again, the "These fuckers really know
how to drag a song out" remark. Maybe it's a clue? I dunno. Personally, I
think there was a little too much elaboration on the last album like that.
The midsection of ToT, the midsection of NM... Thank goodness HK was ripped
out of BMS or it would have been the same... Parts of Peruvian Skies...
You get the idea...
It's not that it's not good or anything, but when you think about it, those
sections could have been removed probably giving enough time for a whole
extra song on the disc. Maybe it's because I'm an 80's kid and used to the
radio standard of 5 minutes or less per song... But I think the longass
songs that seem to lead nowhere and pick up again later are what turn alot
of potential people off to DT. That's pretty much the biggest complaint
I've heard about them time and again. Maybe just a little helpful advice
would be a request to save all of the flahy stuff for LTE and other side
projects? I dunno... It never has seemed to bother me but I know quite a
few people that hate it.
Anyway... Just thought I'd remark on that.

Judging by the recent interview with Mike in the new I&W newsletter (those of you in the DTIFC would have this now), I don't think that will entirely be the case. He does say that they want to keep a focus on songwriting and melody, but, judging by the nature of Jordan's playing, it is inevitable to have those shredding dual keyboard/guitar runs happening. I think even Jordan admited in an interview once that he has trouble slowing his hands down for long periods of time ;-)Hey, if I played keys and was as good as him, I think I'd have trouble doing that too...

FYI: Fates Warning had a little feature in the metal section of the latest BMG magazine. =) It's kinda nice to see a prog group get some mention, y'know.
Here's what they said:
"With a progressive sound that mixed the best of Rush, Queensryche and a touch of Iron Maiden, Fates Warning carved out a distinct niche for themselves on the metal map. When they set out to capture their visceral live shows on a double-CD set, "Still Life", the band again challenged themselves to set a new standard for artistry in metal. Guitar wizard Jim Matheos created a name for himself with technical supremacy, especially on the twenty-minute version of "The Ivory Gate of Dreams." Unafraid to share the spotlight, Fates has toured with other metal mavens such as Divine Regale's keymeister Jason Keazer, and Agent Steel's guitarist Bernie Versailles.
FW- Still Life: Thunderous 1998 double-disc live album from the progressive metal wizards. FW- APSoG: Mind blowing, 55-minute progressive heavy metal opus from FW and friends. FW- Chasing Time: Classic tracks, unreleased cuts! FW- Perfect Symmetry: Band's progressive style reaches new heights.
Oh, and BTW: The Galactic Cowboys also had a feature on the same page. Cool. --

>< i haven't heard QR's O:M. does this cd do that (end slow)? if so that might be another incentive to finally get me to go buy it ><
Good God no. It ends with Eyes of a Stranger, which is definitely not a ballad. At the very end of the song, the music is mixed with clips from other songs on the album and clips of dialogue from the album, and it all comes together with this distorted, sinister voice to make quite a disturbing mix. I fell asleep the first time I heard the album (cuz I was just tired, not bored), and the end of the album woke me up and it sounding like hell's angles coming up to get me. It's scary.
>< Are they're any recommendations for good Power Ballads (either rock ballads or metal/prog ballads)... Songs like... ><
One band that writes some great ballads, besides Savatage, are the Galactic Cowboys. I'm talkin songs like My School, Blind, the brilliant Speak To Me, the list goes on. Everyone's definition of a ballad is different. But there are some ballads that just get to me, put me in a musical trance, like Someone Else (Ryche), Candlelight Fantasia (SymphX), A Vision (one of those old Dream Theater songs which is just a great song), To Live Forever & SDV, Alaska (Shadow Gallery), Honor (Damn the Machine), Blown Wide Open (Big Wreck), Legal Kill (King's X), State of Grace (LTE), Unsaid (Dogma), and Manhattan (Eric Johnson). Megadeth has some good ballads, too (In My Darkest Hour, A Tout Le Monde) and yes, flame me if will, but for all their bad songs and usually unimpressive talent, Pearl Jam has some damn good ballads. Now these aren't Every Rose Has It's Thorn-ballads, these aren't Night Ranger ballads, but I think they could be considered balads, or at least almost.

Anyway, he also played "Purple Haze" (it >rocked) and some cursed Beach Boys and Elvis tunes (I guess it would've >rocked if that did it for me).... He does things like that a lot. When I saw him in November, he did Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" (leading into "My Life") and The Beatles' "Thank You Girl." Among the heavier stuff I've heard of him doing: Led Zeppelin's "Good Times Bad Times" and The Doors' "Roadhouse Blues" (I know, they're not really that heavy.)
Here's some power ballads I haven't seen mentioned (both by KI$$): "Forever" and the woefully underrated "Everytime I Look At You." Both of these are from the non-makeup band. "Forever" came out in '89 and went to #8 on the charts in early '90, so most people have probably heard it. It's probably the best song Michael Bolton ever had anything to do with writing. The other one should have been a hit (like so many other songs), but it was destined to be on _Revenge_, released in the middle of the grunge takeover in '92. An equally good version with orchestration and piano is on _MTV Unplugged_ ('96). All of the above for the two or three people who might actually care. Back to lurking now.

I have always wanted to get a few more DT boots than I actually have but I never really had anything worth trading for...but then five minutes ago I was lying in my bed stoned and then it hit me - I have this 2 1/2 hour long video and it's all the footage of Randy Rhoads EVER and some Ozzy footage from the Randy era. It includes live at the BBC footage, live footage of Randy during his Quiet Riot years, an interview with Ozzy and his wife, an interview with ozzy about the bat, and possibly the dove too but I'm not positive and lots of other cool shit... 75% of the video is SHITTY quality, but it's a great video to own. If anyone is interested in a trade, contact me privately.

I think that would be easier with the help of some software, but I don't know anyone that could make the sound of the bass stand out more. That would be *very* helpful...

Yeah, I was not talking exactly about the bass solo, but the part where the band goes 6/8 to 7/8 (or 7/8 to 6/8, I can't remember). JM does a fast chord tapping sequence that I've never seen transcribed anywhere, including in his instructional video, which I have a copy.
However, he does play that part on Portnoy's instructional video (along with Mike and Derek), but it's still hard to figure it out with precision.

Yes, I wish he could have gone further in that direction, instead of showing countless chord patterns, which kind of makes the video much less entertaining (and instructive, maybe?) than, let's say, Petrucci's (still love it, tho :).
