A thing happened to me the other day that hasn't happened in a long ass
time. I actually heard Iron maiden on one of the major radio stations in
the St. Louis area (97.1 FM). I was driving back to Columbia, changed
stations, and heard the opening strains of Wasted Years. Granted, it was
in a set of 80's hard rock/metal songs they do every day, but damn,
Maiden on the radio. I never thought I'd live to see that day :).

A mans ship is wrecked in a storm and he is washed up on the shore of an
island. He hears drums being played. With a little exploring he soon finds
    a small villiage, the drums
    still playing.

Walking in, and by this time quite annoyed with the non stop drumming, he
asks one of the natives about the drums. "When drums stop...bad..." the
    native says.

Not quite understanding, the man accepted this.

Waking up from a nice sleep, he noticed the drums were still playing. So he
asked another native, and the same answer was given.

    "When drums stop...bad..."

He asked to see the chief of the village, because this drumming was driving
him nuts. Upon finding the chief, he asked him the same question, and was
    given the same answer.

    "When drums stop...bad..."

"But WHY is it bad when the drums stop?"

The chief shifted a bit in his seat, and said...

    "Bass solo."

He plays on Yanni's "Live at the Acropolis". Since I don't own any of
Yanni's other CDs (and probably never will, heheh) I don't know how many of
them he plays on... he *is* listed under "band:" in the liner notes, though
(as opposed to being mentioned separately from the "real" band, like, say,
Nick D'Virgilio on Calling all stations).

In fact, the only complaint I have about the album is that that song
    didn't make the cut.

Maybe those people are just not meant to be DT fans. Don't forget -
DT is not about making music for the masses. What you are
suggesting is that DT tone down their music to make it something
that the general public can more easily digest. Hmm....where have
I heard that accusation before. Oh yeah, that metal band that
begins with "M"....a lot of people think that's what they did, right?

    > and other side projects? I dunno... It never has seemed to bother me but
    > I know quite a few people that hate it.

If they hate it, so be it. There is no "universally loved" music. No
matter what kind of music they make, some people will love it,
some will hate it, and a whole bunch of people won't even know it
    exists.

Ricc has played with Yanni's live band for the past several years and
appears on the "Live at the Acropolis" and "Tribute" discs (and their
accompanying videos, of course). He has a pretty cool bass solo on "Live at
the Acropolis" during the track "The Rain Must Fall".

I'm thankful we have bands like DT & FW to compare. I sit here and shake my
head watching people slam FW and DT for whatever trivial reason. I somehow
always manage to contrast the trivial bitching with the music awards.
Some of you people are bitching about stupid shit while no-talent hacks are
busy making millions and accepting awards, with very little effort on their part.
meanwhile, bands like DT, FW, and SX, are lucky if they can get into the studio.
What a slap it the face to any self respecting musician.

Mike Bahr used to have a tablature transcription of the tapping solo in Met. I on his Prism Website. I don't know if he even reads the jams anymore (or if he's even subscribed), but if he is, maybe he can either pass it to someone willing to post it to a website or he can post it himself...?

Superior just suck me into their world. I had actually NEVER heard of them before I received the disc, and I was very surprised that they were this good. It's kind of special, yea. But I usually need a couple of listens before I get into a disc, even DT's! This one got to me from track one, and got better all alone. I missed my soccer-training too, I was in another world...

I would hope that a lot of the Ytsejammers have heard it, if not for the fact that they're first album "Behind" rocked, but also for the fact that the guitarist Bernd is a 'Jammer himself......

I have said it many many times before, and probably will many more, this album is the definition of "kick-ass", and I refer to it personally as the album that DT should have come out with instead of FII.....

*You see Korg's jaw drop to the floor*

Ric kicks my ass. Everyone has already mentioned his solo in Yanni's The Rain Must Fall, but I think I like his solo in Dance with a Stranger better. That solo's so tasteful it's deliciously filling. I think he used to play for that Tower of Power group the drummer (Joel Taylor) came from. A damn good bass player, imo. Now I really can't wait for Planet X.

    >I heard that accusation before. Oh yeah, that metal band that >begins with "M"....a lot of people think that's what they did, right?

No, it's just a suggestion. I'm sure DT wants to reach out to the masses as much as any other band. I think the long songs lately tend to be more of "Hey look at me play!" wankfests than stuff that actually fit the song like in the earlier albums. If you notice the trends though, many, many of the old 10+ minute song prog bands reverted in the 80's to writing simple 5 minute songs. Their fan bases grew and not many of their older fans weren't disappointed.

Imagine if Rush had extended Tom Sawyer for 30 minutes leaving no room for Limelight on Moving Pictures (just as an example).

I just really think DT could give us more by giving us less in a sense. Shorter songs = >more< songs. Either that or I'm the conceited one being greedy. :) I would just like to see them focus on their songs more than their talents. Sure, we all know they're some of the best players out there, but let's start checking their songwriting skills next. Sometimes I think (The midsection of ToT: It's Raining especially) DT wanks off too much and that section in particular was imo very pointless. It was great the first time I heard it but now I'm just as likely to want to skip it myself.

Anyway, that's just my opinion. -- KorgX3 expects Mike to send him a boot to the head in the mail.
