What was negative about the album??? James...I really enjoy
listening to him on the studio things, but man, I really didn't care
for
his performance here. Now, perhaps if I was there watching, it'd be
different, but it seemed to me like he was just going through motions
trying to get words out instead of actually singing melodies
MAN!....no shit!
I was there at midnight the date of release....I couldn't wait to get
up to the store
i got the very first copy, threw it in and was greatly disappointed
with James live singing
what the fuck??!!??
personally i think James has a killer voice but the live stuff sounds
like shit
oh well, the video ruled though right?
and since the quality of the recording is good, i can assume that its
just that particular performance
i saw them live at Club Rio in Phoenix...and the show was completely
flawless

i went ove to do that "happy birthday to john's friend" thing, and as
often happens, i clicked on a coupla links out from that page, just
to see where it leads
one was tracy's corner, and tracy has a pop-up menu showing her
favorite performer, and they are Lauryn Hill, TLC, offspring, brandy,
monica, cher britney spears, jewel, crash test dummies, sky, madonna,
semisonic, celine dion, shania twain, alanis morrisette and will
smith....
and just when I'm about to click off the page in some amount of
disgust at the hopeless mainstreamness of that list, i scroll down
and see.....a savatage quote.....
go figure

>> the be all and end all of whatever year's output of music it
>> happens to grace.....
> Thats why it was MY FUCKING OPINION!!
> Good grief, some of you are so uptight about everything.
i'm totally failing to see how in any way my statement makes me too
uptight.....just because it's my opinion that your opinion is
asinine, all of a sudden I'm constipated?
okay, you're entitled to your opinion, but as a general rule,
statements such as the one you made automatically consign a whole
heaping helping of great music to second class status.....
> If it doesn't still do the same thing to you when you listen to it,
> then to bad for you.
too bad for me? wtf is that supposed to mean? is my life going to be
shit for the next thousand years because my musical tastes don't
correspond in every way, including astrologically and
meteorologically, with yours? just because Dream Theater's music
doesn't raise me to a level beyond nirvana, I'm gonna be doomed to
spend a hellish eternity listening to Nirvana?
regardless of what i said above, I wasn't attacking your opinion,
just your blanket statement.....but if you feel the need to so
vehemently defend your "FUCKING OPINION", i think it's obvious who
the uptight one in this matter really is.....
>I still consider everything DT has put out, to be
>the best stuff of all the releases that were put out the
>same year DT released something, (this again is MY OPINION)

Subject: Different Intro's
Message-ID: <6688fa50.2447cb01@aol.com>
I am a student at the University of Maine at Farmington here in Farmington,
Maine; and I have an alarmingly true (yet scary) occurance I have had
recently!
I was in a friend's Dorm room, when FII came into play on the CD Changer. I
was listening and air drumming, as I always do when listening to DT, when You
Not Me came on. I was completely taken back at the intro on my friends CD.
On his CD, John is useing a wah pedal to get some neet sounds in the guitar
part. But mine doesn't. We tried to solve the problem and bought a third
copy of FII, but the new one off the shelf was just like his. Am I the only
person on earth who has a copy of FII that does not have the guitar effects
in the intro of You Not Me?? If you happen to listen to yours and realize
that yours has no effects either, please contact me. If anyone has any
reasoning behind this oddity, e-mail me at Rushian953@aol.com
Thank you

Long Island's Free weekly arts & entertainment newpaper
contained an article listing the 99 Essential Long Island
records from 1958-1999. All the artists listed lived on=20
Long Island at one time or another.
Some artists include Billy Joel, Twisted Sister, Public
Enemy, Joe Satriani, Steve Via, and located at #70, OFB:
70. DREAM THEATER
WHEN DREAM AND DAY UNITE 1989=20
Originally known as Majesty, Long Island's
Dream Theater carry the torch for
Progressive Rock. Like their fathers before
them (Rush, Queensryche and Emerson,
Lake and Palmer), these guys really know
how to play. When I first heard When Dream
and Day Unite, my head almost exploded
because they were so fast, precise and
musically tight. Even with their odd-time
signatures and over-the-top soloing on every
instrument, the record has some very catchy,
dare I say, pop songs. I was so blown away
by this album, I started taking keyboard
lessons from (now) ex-member Kevin Moore.
I soon found out that most musicians I
encountered were taking lessons from some
member of Dream Theater. How's that for an
influence? =97 MB=20
Thought I'd share the interesting write up,
take care

I just read this encouraging tidbit below. Who knows if it will actually happen....at least to even suggest something like this is a definite upswing for metal in the US!!

IRON SAVIOR have seen Unification released in the US now on Noise Records, and here's a nice tidbit of metal gossip - the band looks to head to the US for a tour this summer possibly, but it'd be without Kai. There's a strong possibility we'll see them on the Iced Earth/Destiny's End package, so keep your eyes peeled to Metal Meltdown for more information.
In related news ... In the interview with Dr.Metal (can be heard on Metal Meltdown) Kai Hansen talks about a strong possibility of Gamma Ray touring major US cities this year!!!

Okay, I have to comment again now. This "chain" of pop->metal->prog->avant garde is a joke, right? I mean, you're fucking kidding around, and I just missed some smiley faces, right? Who has the audacity to put one genre on top of another in any sense, let alone in such thoughtlessly general qualitative terms? What could be the POSSIBLE purpose of this, other than foster some bogus elitism? What's next, saying that your career is the superior career? I bet your eye color is superior too. The first albums I got as a kid were the following (in no particular order): Prince's Purple Rain, Michael Jackson's Thriller, Bruce Springsteen's Born in the USA, and Surviver's Eye of the Tiger. I was really fucking young...4-6 years old... I don't remeber exactly... but I listened to music a lot. By the time I was in 4th grade, I was listening to glam metal, and by the time I was in 5th I was starting to play guitar and listening to music for shred-content. I was listening to Cacophony before I was 12. They're prog metal. Did I progress really fast that at 12 I was more advanced than some of you who only found DT this year? Fuck no. There is no form of music without talent, and I don't think anyone's denying this. Jim Lenart (who I've known for a long time) recently posted something about disliking songs that get stuck in his head. That's all good... your tastes are your tastes... but I would call that excellent song or jingle or phrase writing. It's just done that way for a reason. DT does try to keep you engaged in a developing experience with their tunes. That's done for another reason. Writing a song isn't like turning on a power switch. It's not a "one possible way to do this" kind of thing. There are SO MANY reason we listen to music, and there is no genre that can really satisfy all of those reasons. By the same token, in order to satisfy listeners, there are equally innumerous ways to write songs and reasons for writing them. I'm the biggest "Jewel" hater on this list. I completely despise her music. I think she's an idiot. But I will not deny that she (or whoever writes her music) has an ability to write a catchy tune. I will probably comment on the fact that there's nothing really new in her music, so from that angle, it's not as great songwriting as I'd normally give it credit for being. I'm 21. The last album that destroyed me was Sting's Soul Cages (which I heard for the first time this week, though I've been a Sting fan for years). That's pop. Are my tastes befuddling themselves? No. The most recent album I bought was Jim Phelps' new CD, which is as avante garde as you can get (cutting edge sound shaping ideas... for the most part a more "sonic" than "musical" experience). In no way is one style of music that I listen to more significant than another. There is, IMO, total bullshit music in every genre, and there is greatness in every genre. The order in which you discover each genre has no role in how advanced you are or how fragrant your shit is. And while I'm delivering my sermon, I will say again, I think any of you who pull the "metal is the only way" ("all industrial sucks" or whatever the case may be) trigger are shooting yourself in the foot. You're ignoring the vaster majority of great music out there by zeroing in on one style, and you're insulting everyone who fails to close their minds on the way in like you do.
> From: Kevin Carmouche <khc@bellsouth.net> > not saying that Al D and John Mc aren't great at what they do, > but straight-ahead jazz just has so much more raw energy to it that I find > wonderful to listen to. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who cares > more for regular jazz than Fusion...
I'm in the boat with you, but I don't think I can agree with the idea that "straight ahead jazz" (by which I assume you mean Dixieland through Cool Jazz eras) has "more" raw energy to it. I think I may be on the same page with you though... perhaps just disagreeing in wording. The difference to me, between great jazz, and great rock is that great jazz is heavily improv. there's always a huge possibility that a solo may start to suck, etc. The big guns of the genre(s) rarely screwed up a solo on a final recording. There are no overdubs and stuff to screw up the overall sound of the solo etc. When it comes to rock, and almost every other style of music now, I find myself growing increasingly annoyed with what is considered a solo. After hearing such incredible sounds from guys like Stern and Scofield etc, it bothers me when someone COMPOSES a solo and it doesn't rock. If you can't improv, there's a flaw in your musicianship, but not necessarily your music. As long as you can still hammer out something meaningful, everything's cool. But when you waste notes, or let out-of-tune notes, or fuckups through on a final recording of a solo that you composed, you've given me a reason to dislike your music, personally.
> have an easier time with something like Blood Sweat and Tears and Chicago, > who are rock bands that put in a lot of jazz elements, than I do with > something like Pat Metheny(who's good at what he does, it's just not my > thing), who is supposed to be jazz but just sounds too rockish for my > taste(when I'm in that mode of listening)
What Metheny are you talking about? I have some things that sort of defy that description. He has an album of all standards, incidentally (Q & A)

That's right, huge names all around . . . like mine. You know his "indie" days are over when a jammer shows up in his movie :-) Actually . . just as an extra, and knowing my luck, you'll just see my ear . . . or maybe see me flash across the screen for a half a second. Look for my ear in the scene near the end of the movie when George Carlin is giving a speech in front of a church, and Affleck and Damon come and cause a little commotion. Oh, there is DT content here . . . I was wearing my Ytsecon II shirt underneath my sweater :-) Look for Dogma in the fall.
