    i need a cheap backup guitar and have been looking around at various
    entry level models. anyone owned/played the ibanez GAX70? i play heavy
    rock - nothing real technical, mostly just power/bar/open chord rhythm
    parts. any opinions on this particular axe would be greatly appreciated.
    please reply via private e-mail. slave1@nycap.rr.com

    phil! that "coffee can" is known as a piccolo snare, and it's absolutely
    NOT triggered. the snare work on ACoS is IMO the most dynamic of any DT
    recording. take another listen...

    Hey, my first posting to this list: Hi there jammers !

    If you like Rush check out Tiles, perhaps 'Fence the Clear' first. Sounds
    very 'rushy' to me but with enough own potential.
    Hm, did you try Shadow Gallery's 'Tyranny' ? It took me some hours to adapt
    to the CD but it made it's way into my personal top ten...
    Very close to DT: Empty Tremor from Italy. Great songs and performance but,
    well, the vocals could need just a little bit 'development', quite like Vigilante
    from Japan.
    Some other bands to give a try: Enchant (more on the Rush-side),
    Superior, Damn the Machine, Sieges Even, Psychotic Waltz, Arena's 'The Visitor'
    and as always: Fates Warning =8)

    Magna Carta released a sampler called 'frog pest tree' featuring Ice Age, Magellan,
    Royal Hunt, Dali's dilemma, LTE and Explorers Club among others.
    The home demo version of Ice Age's 'Join' really blew my away

    Well, lotso stuff to check out, I hope you find something you like.

    Cheers, O/iverP NP: Sieges Even - Sophisticated

    Hi again folks, I've returned. Once more unto the breach an' all that.

IF she was an AVERAGE LOOKING >person (like the guys in most rock groups, for example), she wouldn't >have sold shit for albums. Dear oh dear. What do you mean IF? BS is the perfect example of someone you'd never give a second glance to if she wasn't on TV. I do agree with your point, but let's be honest: Britney is hardly an example of beauty and physical perfection (well, she's no Minnie Diver, and she's not Irish, so it would be difficult). Besides, since we're being fair, I'd hardly call DT's members "average" looking - c'mon, JP, MP and KJLB stand head-and-shoulders above most guys in the moist-gusset stakes.

    Just to chuck in my first DT experience, I saw a good review of them in Metal Hammer, and thought it was a really cool name; and since this unsigned band I really liked cited them as heroes, I thought I ought to give it a try. FII (impressed), then I&W (Jaw hit floor), then Awake (took a few spins, but ended up as firm favourite), ACoS (rapidly getting obsessed by DT by this point), L@TM (Required some time to recover - wow, they can actually pull this stuff off LIVE??), and then WDADU (...Err...Well, five out of six is respectable for any band, right?).

    I nearly forgot.

    I want to know exactly why the Corrs use a drum machine on their last album, when their drummer is actually quite shockingly good. I'm not kidding, she can really play - hell they ALL can. Time to kill the producer, methinks.

    Wow... I guess you learn something new everyday, I never knew MP used drum triggers on I&W... but I guess it explains a lot (like why I've never been able to get that snare sound). I always admired how clean of a tone Mike gets from his drums... never imagined that the first time I heard it was triggered. Ah well... scary thing is he can duplicate it live if need be. As for my opinion on triggered drums, it takes the heart out of percussion. One of the things I'm always trying to show to non-percussionists is how accents and light flavor hits can REALLY spice up a rhythm (Just listen to Portnoy's drum solos... he sounds like a marching percussionist). Drum triggers take that away. On another note I'd really hate to hear what FII would have sounded like with those triggers, it relies too much on tone variation.

    I'd be curious to know what your first DT experience was, Mike :)

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Thanks to Cyberduke for posting that URL on the Zappa sounds. For all those who are convinced Frank was nothing more than stupid lyrics around hokey melodies and stuff, you might want to check today's samples out. He was just a monster composer, a composing machine!!
    Think about it, for someone the masses know mostly for such thought provoking lyrics as "Don't Eat The Yellow Snow" and "He POOTS forth" to be the same person who could even conceive this stuff! He was keeping classical music alive as much as any modern day classical composer. What a loss... <sigh>
    He couldn't get enough..He attempted to use every instrument / sound / tambre known to humans and span the audible frequency spectrum over the course of a 3 minute passage. This is just some whacked out, grandiose stuff, on a scale of theatRE. I dare label it Progressive Symph. :)
    He didn't mean it Mike! Go easy man! Actually, the thing with I&W is that the snare was triggered - in other words every snare tap had the same volume regardless of its force, or at least that's how I understood it. In that case the drums may have seemed a little artificial, but if you still need proof go get the LIT vid and you'll see Portnoy behind his kit at BearTracks. Speaking of Mike, happy b-day!
    I downloaded GK mp3 "Rivers Dancing" from an FTP server sent by jammer. Now, I'm a little confused:
    Artist name: Sean Malone Album: Gordian Knot
    [ Malone | Snelwar | Reinert ]
    I thought the band name is GK? Am I right? And where is Myung in the line-up? Or he is playing just on some albums? What is GK actually, a real band or a project? I heard that Malone is the main figure in it. But if the band is GK why Artist name is not GK? :) Can someone enlighten me? Thanx -- CyberDuke
    Actually, have you ever played a Roland V-Drum set? Not that it beats a real drumkit, but it is one of the sweetest toys I've ever played on (and I'm not a drummer!). Dynamic samples rule. It'd be something great to have if you wanted to record live-sounding drums and didn't want to waste the time getting a good sound out of a real kit.(recording real kits seems to be a nightmare, mics everywhere, the drummer belches and you hear it in the middle of New Millenium, etc...)
    And correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the bass drum was also sampled throughout I&W, too. Haven't seen mention of that anywhere.
    >course of a 3 minute passage. This is just some whacked out, grandiose >stuff, on a scale of theatRE. I dare label it Progressive Symph. :)
    I truly believe that Peaches En Regalia qualifies for that label. His lyrics aren't stupid at all anyway. If you actually pay attention to them they're very witty and funny.
