Just to add to the depressing songs thread. Two words, Saviour Machine.
Those guys can really get me going with their moody sounds. Maybe moody
would be a better word than depressing to describe them. In particular,
though, their song "A World Alone" (off the first, self-titled CD) just
    gets to me.
All this talk about bad gigs reminds me of Henry Rollins "Get in the Van:
On the Road with Black Flag" spoken word album. He had some bad gigs
back in the day. That's a guy/band that paid their dues.

Okay, based solely on the words of people on this list, I broke down and
ordered Day For Night from CDNow (why CDNow? I had a 10.00 gift
certificate for it). It hasn't even been shipped yet, and I'm anxiously
awaiting it. What kind of music should I expect from this album? Is it
more like Beware of Darkness, or is it a different style? I have heard
BoD and a few tracks off of The Light, but I don't know if they stick to
that or if they change their style around. Is it that same kind of Jethro
Tull-ish music on this album too? If so, then I'm REALLY going to like
    it.

    Hail,

Wonder if anyone else picked up on this...

I know I'm a bit late with this but as I was listening to Howard Stern
    last
Thursday (4/22) morning I was FROZEN in my tracks as I heard the
    supremely
heavy inro. riff to CONCEPTION's "My Decision" track off of "Parallel
Minds"!!! You'll recognize it when you hear it....sick harmonics in
    that
    one.

Granted the Stern show was using it as bumper music (like DREAM THEATER)
    but
I thought it was awesome that millions of people across the states were
listening to CONCEPTION at the same time (not that they would know good
    music
if it tore 'em a new ass).

For those who don't know...Howard Stern is a very popular radio
    personality
that has a nationally syndicated morning talk show from 6am - 11am that
    centers
around tits, making fun of celebrities, tits, porn queens, tits, lesbian
    dating
games, and tits. Nothing mindblowing but always managing to bring a
    smile
    to my face every morning.

Anyway....my co-workers were wondering what the big deal was as I was
    freaking out
and blasting the volume..I just couldn't believe it. Maybe next week
    they'll
play some RHAPSODY or CHILDREN OF BODOM.

    cheers,

    >Where do I start with Spock's Beard?

Anywhere. Everywhere. It doesn't matter. You will end up getting all their releases, just like the rest of us. :)

Seriously though, their latest release, Day For Night, is the most refined Spock's...Kindness of Strangers is in the same accesability range as DFN. Their older releases, Beware of Darkness and The Light, are more proggy, but still very good. They are a little less focused than the first two I've mentioned. But they are all incredibly good, and I love their vocalist. Spock's is definitely prog ROCK, not metal. Don't buy this expecting Symphony X to come blasting through the stereo. Nor are they much like Dream Theater, other than that they can write some incredible songs. Their lyrics are quite enigmatic, but after a while make a bit of sense. They do not opt toward virtuosic displays of their ability. They tend toward writing songs as a whole, and they are very, VERY good at it. If DT is a 10, Spock's is a 9, right up there with them. If not a 9, then a 10. I keep saying they, but generally it is the work of

Spock's is all about the groove, all about the emotion, all about diversity, all about great musicianship, all about smart and thought provoking themes, generally all about what we all love in music. Get Day For Night, and then branch out, I would say. I've been listening to DFN nonstop since I received it. Great vocal harmonies on this disc too.

Just get Spock's. Take the risk and buy one of their discs. I did and they are one of my favorites, up there with DT.

    Good luck.

This was the present surprise I was treated to at a recent trip to Borders. Under the "music you can't classify" section. Bought the CD...it is indeed fantastic. My goodness. Kevin's voice is great...very different than what I was expecting, but great nonetheless. Part of an excellent CD-buying sojourn, actually, as I bought Fish's "Raingods with Zippos" and Rick Wakeman's "Return to the Centre of the Earth" at the same time.

I don't define the parameters of my record collection by the bands that DT mentions in interviews. If you do, you're very sad; and I hope you fuck off and die, since it's exactly this attitude that allows the music scene to stagnate. I hope that you are alone on this list in making this mistake.

That might go some way to explaining the Shane McGowan take-off. Seriously, even I could have sung better than that. Even Roger Waters sung it better than that. All I know is that if I ever run into Lame, he'll be missing a few more teeth for what he did to this excellent song.

Thus, they ditched him in favour of JR, who threatens them in neither way.

Haven't heard the music. There seemed to be, er, vastly disparate opinions on Perpetual Motion. Apparently it's pretty modern stuff. Orchestral techno or something equally strange. I got the feeling I might like it. The only other thing I know about it is that my old friend Rowan "Robertsson" Robertson (we both were in Dio a few years ago) is playing guitar with them, too.. I talked to him a few months ago, I think he said the band was thinking about relocating to Europe (?)

I realise that it's late in the thread and I haven't read all posts but I just have to add a marvellous record to the list. Anyone heard "Painting on glass" by "3rd and the mortal". It's a beautiful album with tons of atmosphere. Whenever I listen to it I just sit breathtaken for the whole album, nothing can drag me away. If you haven't heard it yet go out and get yourself a copy, cause this baby is great stuff. Turn down the lights and just listen.

Greetings jammerz ! Finally, I got last thursday my copy of Day for nigth. Love at a fisrt sight (well, ok, first listening.) Now I realize what someone mean when talking about that smile never leaving his face when hearing the disc.

Well I have a question. Yesterday, as all sundays, I went to rehearsal and brought (proudly) my new adquisition..(jeje) When I showed it to my bandmates, my rythm guitar(and singer) told (at a very first listening (30 secs. aprox. of DfN) that they're a lot more comercial now (Uh?) I asked him, You know THIS band?, Yes, he replied me. I saw a video on MTV.

MMmmmmm, I don't have cable Tv, so I don't watch EmpTvy (is like that?), but.. really I can't believe that they have clips on rotation there.

Besides, this is a I-know-everything and all-that-i-like-is-great-and- all-that-you-like-sucks guy. Just now (like a year after of playing and knowing him) I finally made him get onto DT (even not that enthusiastic)

Well, any help will be apreciated. Do SB have clips on MTV ?

    See ya !

There are definitely no Spock's Beard videos on Mtv.

SB only has one video available: 'The Spock's Beard Home Movie', which is of a concert at Club Zeche in Bochum, Germany (Jan 98)... and it's not commercially available (you can only order it directly from the band's website).

VAST is a one-man project. The guy's name is John Crosby. Apparently, about 8 years ago, when he was 13, Guitar Player magazine tapped him as one of the young guitarists to watch or something.

Anyway, the album, which is self-titled, is not a shred-fest or anything like that. Has some crunchy guitar, but mixes in techno-ish keyboards, 18-piece orchestra samples, gregorian monk work, female choir work, etc. Reminds me of a mellower Nine Inch Nails or a harder Chroma Key. The single, called "Touched" is quite awesome, and the rest of the album is quite good itself. Very good vocals.......

Anyway, some background on the guy. John Crosby as a kid was a fan of Beatles, Metallica, and then Joe Satriani. He joined a guitar workshop as a kid and sent a demo tape to the president of Shrapnel, and that's what brought about the Guitar Player coverage. Anyway, he continued working on music, and got into the whole electronic music scene, and finally got a record deal. The album came out last Tuesday.......I would recommend it for those who enjoy Nine Inch Nails on low-dose Valium, or Chroma Key........

    Hope this helps.......

yeah, but what does he LOOK like? :)

as for the subject, you ever have those instances where some reference that you haven't heard used in ages all of a sudden start popping up all over the place, in totally unconnected ways?

Case in Point, the "better to reign in hell, than to serve in Heaven" bit from Milton's "pairofdice lost"....read it in high school, thought it was a cool line, forgot about it until this week, when I'm trawling through the library, and my eyes fall upon a book by William Diehl (Primal Fear, from which the shitty Richard Gere/Edward Norton movie was made, Show of Evil).....it's called Reign in Hell, and of course it references Milton.....

and then the next day (friday), I'm watching a Woody Allen movie called Deconstructing Harry (funny flick, btw, recommended), and Woody uses that reference when he's talking to the devil, aka Billy Crystal.....too bizarre a coincidence.....

and then there's this total non-coincidence....i listened to some DT for, as far as I know, the first time this year.....Images and Words, probably because you all were talking about the triggered drums last week.....well, the triggered drums have never before bothered me.....it's never really hit me upside the hezd how uniform each of those snare hits were......

but something changed from all the other times the triggered drums have been discussed.....someone (more than one actually) DESCRIBED what was going on with the triggers, what exactly triggered drums meant.....and so when i went and listened to I&W.....all i could hear were those maddeningly uniform snares.....took me a couple of songs to get over it, and then i had to start wondering why on earth I hadn't listened to any Dream Theater in so darn long......that's a mystery i fear may never be resolved....
