heard a report on the radio this morning saying tori amos and alanis
morisette were hooking up with MP3.com in some kind of business
deal.....with morisette becoming part owner of the site
somehow.....anyone know anything about this? mp3.com doesn't have
any news flash on their site, so i was kinda wondering about the
accuracy of the report.

They just played a gig at The Viper Room in LA a couple weeks ago,
so I guess they're back.

They played a gig ? The last I heard was that they recorded 2 new songs for a
box set, but nothing about playing shows. I thought that they hadn't played
since the Kiss tour in 96...how do you know that they played in LA?

Yep, it's true. Here's a post from the ToriNews list:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is a summary of what we know about the upcoming Tori/Alanis tour:
The tour is officially called the "5 1/2 Weeks Tour"
The tour will begin August 18 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL and end on September
25 in Los Angeles, CA. The tour will consists of 26 dates in mostly
amphitheaters in major markets. Sadly there are no tour dates listed for
the Northwest or Texas area. There are no plans to Tori to tour in any
other countries and no additional dates are expected to be announced.
The tour is sponsored my MP3.com and Best Buy, and RAINN will be heavily
involved as well. MP3.com plans a press conference on Tuesday, April 27
to explain their involvement in the tour. (This is interesting because
we all know how much record companies despise the MP3 format!)
Tori and Alanis are said to be "co-headlining" this tour. At this time
we have no idea who will open for whom...
Live Daily says that Tori will release a 2-CD set in the fall, but it
will likely be toward the end of this tour or after it is over. Unlike
Rolling Stone which said the release would be 3-CDs, this article says
it will only be a 2-CD release with live material on one disc and "new
studio work" on the other. Whatever happened to the b-sides plan? WIll
that disc really have all new material? I would love to know more about
this.
We have NO IDEA when any of these shows will go on sale, but I am
guessing the on sale dates will be announced soon! Stay tuned...
I have the latest tour news on the Dent as well!
You can see the actual tour schedule here:
http://members.aye.net/~mikewhy/tourlist99.html
And keep up with the all the latest info on the tour here:
http://members.aye.net/~mikewhy/tour99.html
You can also talk about the tour in my online forum:
http://client.ibboards.com/cgi-bin/dent/Ultimate.cgi
I hope to see many of you at the shows!
Yours in Tori,
Mikewhy

Funny you mention that. Just the other day I was in my bank rolling over an IRA. While I was waiting I became impatient :), so I began looking at all those handy little leaflets found in banks. One of them had an offer for a free tote bag when you open a checking account with something like $250.
In the description of the tote bag, they mentioned what a nice 'gusset' the bag had. It was ok. Wasn't worth $250 though :)

Greetings, y'all.... ]From time to time, some of you post odd little encounters that happen in day to day life that relate in some way to OFB. Here's one i experienced over the weekend...
Driving home with my wife and son after a Saturday of mall-hopping and minor league baseball. i was driving, so i had control of the radio, and popped in a compilation tape i made of my favorite DT songs. Usually i'll sing along (to my family's dismay!!!) but not today. Now, my wife is a wonderfully patient woman. She'll listen to all kinds of crap she doesn't like without saying a word, knowing she'll get her turn. Certainly my taste in music isn't always to her liking; and some of the stuff she listens to isn't my bag -- she mostly listens to modern pop-rock(Sugar Ray, Sheryl Crow, etc..) and Country; i've never known her to take interest in DT, but i won't complain. But this particular drive home was interesting when, out of nowhere, she starts singing along to Scarred!!! Made the trip home really fun for me! i think she's listening to my CDs when i'm not around. Another convert in the making!!!! :-) :-)

On Saturday morning, me and my girlfriend were walking out of the bathroom after we'd both had our showers. I left the door to my room open and was blasting I&W. After PMU ended, she asked what it was that I'd been listening to, so I told her. She said "Hm, for once you're actually listening to something that's half way decent". This is the same girl that digs anything on the radio, so this was kinda interesting. Thought you guys might be interested in this. === = *Trent

>< Where do I start with Spock's Beard? ><
If it's any help, I started with "The Light." This was a few months ago. I've only gotten Day For Night since then, but I play on getting all of them. So The Light got me started. Although, The Light is so out there, it may not be wise to start with. It can be very hard to get into, or you'll love it right away. I think it could be a 50/50 chance for anyone. The album is like the They Might Be Giants or progressive rock.
>< When I showed it to my bandmates, my rythm guitar(and singer) told (at a very first listening (30 secs. aprox. of DfN) that they're a lot more comercial now (Uh?) I asked him, You know THIS band?, Yes, he replied me. I saw a video on MTV. ><
Maybe he was confusing it for someone else. DFN has some pop-rock, radio sounding parts, especially all of Skin. Very catchy, could very easily be a hit single, but it's still more respectable than what you usually hear on the radio.

>Is there a good place to go to on the internet to purchase cool shit >such as t-shirts, long sleeves, posters, and so forth? This place of course
You could always get the ytsejam shirt. It's a dream theater shirt I made and sell exclusively to us, where "us" is defined as anyone, human or otherwise, with a check for 20.00, which INCLUDES shipping and handling, made out to me:
Joshua Rasiel 5 Brookhill Drive West Nyack, NY 10994
For anyone who does not know, the shirt is excellent, of highest quality, everybody loves it, and of course, there are full pix and info on my web page.
Just so there is no confusion, the price of the shirt used to be 15.00, and now it's 16.80. Since U.S. priority mail is 3.20, that's an even $20 anywhere in the continental U.S.
Why did I raise the price? Well, it was too cheap to begin with. Concert shirts start at 20, and ones of this quality go for more like 30. And they get those made in bunches of 80 billion, so they pay less per shirt to have them made. I had a relatively small batch done, and I wanted to sell them as cheaply as possible because I didn't(and still don't) care about profit. But I DO need to cover my expenses, if it's at all possible, and so I raised the price. I want to continue making and selling these shirts, and that will be impossible if I have to keep taking losses. And it's still an excellent deal, no doubt about it.
Questions or comments, please give me a yodel-ay-hee-hoo.

<< Spock's is all about the groove, all about the emotion, all about diversity, all about great musicianship, all about smart and thought provoking themes, generally all about what we all love in music. >>
My feelings exactly! Diversity, emotion, groove, everything. They are truly amazing...what sets them apart from a lot of prog bands is their capability in writing short, simple songs, and longer, more complex works of equal merit. Dream Theater is my favorite band, but sometimes I get the feeling that they aren't very adept at writing shorter, more focused songs...although some of the songs not contained on the "official" albums are damn good in that category (e.g. To Live Forever, Cover My Eyes). What makes Spock's Beard unique is that they take their remarkable musical abilities and funnel this talent into songs that (in structure) sometimes resemble mainstream rock. This could possibly be attributed to the fact that Morse writes nearly all of their stuff singlehandedly, lending their songs a real unity of purpose, a coherence rarely scene in prog today. For the person who asked where to begin, I too would recommend "Day for Night"...I think that "The Light" and their other older stuff showcases some amazing songwriting, but I just never feel quite as compelled to listen to it. I think that it lacks the full emotion that is so well invoked in DFN.

Hopefully, the album won't be as lame as the title (Q2K) they came up with! ;-)

Last night, I Elvin Jones. He was John Coltrane's drummer back in the day. Good god what a show. If the Elvin Jones Jazz Machine comes to your town...go! They're pretty much playing standards, but you've probably never heard interpretations like this before. The guy is 75 years old and still plays drums like a maniac. Very inspring to watch Elvin play. His piano player was INSANE. A guy named Carlos McKinney. I've never heard anyone play standards like he did. You'd figure he'd just comp behind the sax solos and do short solos leading up to the bass solos, but this guy was all over the place! He was so quick..playing these wild runs over all the changes and jigging around on the bench and stabbing at the keys like a crazed loon. And yet he managed to articulate very clearly and didn't screw up at all (Elvin messed up here and there, though that's to be expected). I'm so used to hearing jazz pianists who are really good, but play the standards in a very traditional way...because it's the "right" way to play those old Duke Ellington or Thelonius Monk tunes. I'd thought that aggressive piano work like that was relegated solely to the realm of fusion but this guy rudely disabused me of that notion. I was just stunned into motionlessness watching this guy. UNBELIEVABLE! An absolutely cathartic evening. Plus, the wine helped :) Does anyone know if Carlos McKinney has any CD's of his own? I'd really like to check out more of his playing. You must have your bands confused... that is Stone Temple Pilots that is still together and waiting for Scott Weiland to get his shit together and ditch the heroine. Last thing I heard about Alice In Chains is that they DID break up. :( They were not my fav, but a really cool band that grew on me.
