Hey, for those who don't have it but want it, and happen to live in
Boston, there's one Hollow Years single (the one with 4 tracks ) at the
Newbury Comics on Newbury Street.
Rock on

You are correct sir...it was STP that played the Viper recently, however,
Alice is still together (for the moment at least). Alice's product manager
at Columbia Records (who I spoke with last week) told me they are definitely
still a band. A highlights (from their box set) cd is coming out in June and
the box set will be out in Fall. Unreleased tracks and all.

No, he's right. *Both* bands have the same problem and both didn't broke
up (check any of these bands' related sites)... Coincidence??

I got the tribute CD last week, without ever listening to any original
Emerson Lake and Palmer. This CD ROCKS! The melodies are great, the music
is very "prog" yet easy to get into, and the keyboard sounds are really fun
and upbeat! It's a very fun CD to listen to; I especially like "Karn Evil
9" and "The Sheriff." Being a keyboardist, the keyboard parts are really
great. It's fun to listen to Jordan and Derek's signature sounds -- the
songs sound like other things THEY might have written! Also, after
listening to this, I can certainly hear some ELP in Dream Theater songs.
The only ELP I've ever heard was a couple of minutes of something (maybe
Karn Evil 9?) before deciding it was way too "over-the-top"; I turned it
off. Based on what I like here, does anyone have any recommendations for a
beginning ELP purchase? How "old" do the original ELP albums sound? I
really like the new, upbeat sounds on this album, and I'm concerned I'll
never get into an older ELP album, because of the sound. (On the other
hand, I love Spock's Beard, and they've got one of the "oldest" rock sounds
out there.)
So, any recommendations? Thanks in advance!
Ryan

Although I see where you're coming from, I think that's a bit harsh. I
don't remember what CD the post was referring to, but I believe the
original poster's intent is fairly reasonable. Geez, seeing as DT is my
favorite group (in my particular case), it's very reasonable to assume
that I might enjoy SOME of the same music they do. If I read somewhere
that JP and MP and the boys absolutely LOVE a particular CD, I won't
take it as Gospel that I will love it too..... but it's very likely I'd
give it a look.

Anyway, to the point. I'd like to commend to the 'Jam the new Afro Celt Sound System album, "Volume II: Release". If you're only into the hard and heavy stuff, this probably isn't for you. For the rest of us, this is about as progressive as it gets. It's also far-and-away one of the best releases I've heard this year, with rapturous melodies swirling over the top of lush, thick synth pads, and coalescing with - apologies for using such technical terms - cool-as-ice weird African rhythm stuff. For those who really can't live without virtuoso performances on an album, they're here aplently; with complex 16th- note Irish fiddle stuff in weird scales. My jaw hasn't dropped this low in a long time, so light up some incense, turn down the lights and soak it up. Then play it again; then reach for the guitar and hit play yet again for a bloody complex technique lesson.

since you gave a review of Qryche...I'll do "The Bleeding"
1.Staring Through the Eyes of the Dead This song kills things....I like it alot considering the last time i heard this band their studio sound sucked.
Quote from this song "Knives cutting into me/Scalpels rip me/screaming into deaf ears/they stop and see my tears" 2. Fucked with a Knife
this is downright disturbing Quote-"From behind/i cut her crotch/in her a**/i stick my c**k/killing as i cum"
3..........the rest of this cd was the same theme....imagine that?!
ill leave with a final choice quote-"Bone fragments clot to the hatchet/knee-deep in the blood of the dead/cranial seperation/sex with her severed head

And it's not even the best stuff of the album. :)

Yes we can Jon! :)
It's quite good rock album, featuring many famous guitarists. Yngwie plays here his best guitar work IMHO! :) Why? Because he's so off his usual boring shredder style that he actually plays something meaningful. Track "Dislocated" featuring PAUL GILBERT open the album and it really rocks! The bass here is very characteristic, very interesting style. He has this cool tone of the bass.
This is not prog at all, just a good guitars rock. I used to rock it on the stereo very often year or two ago. -- CyberDuke

Hmm...I've just recently gotten into Bill Evans - talk about someone who could twist and contort a standard. It seems there are endless musicians who can do a few things well, but few who excel in every aspect of playing. Evans seems to be firmly among the latter, as does McKinney, if he's all you describe. I, too, would be interested in checking him out.
As an aside, if you're ever unsure of a musicians output, http://www.allmusic.com is probably THE definitive online music guide for jazz, rock, and really anything. You can search on a specific musician and it'll return their discography, along with appearances on other artist's albums. I pretty much live at that site when making buying decisions, and I think that for the most part, their ratings are on the mark.

I did. The Light is my first SB album and it rolled completely over me. I find quite alot of seventies Genesis influences in it (mellotron, rhythm stuff,...), but a bit more jazzy.
Anyway, I'm hesitating what to buy next. Some say I'll be disappointed when I buy their latest release, so I guess it'll be DFN.
