Okay, my final respond to this subject and then i'll shut up. I agree that
the concerned riff IS the heaviest on the album, that's why I picked it as
an example. As far as I'm concerned, just like someone might say that he
thinks that Symphony X is heavier than DT, I say that I think IA is
heavier. Not only the guitar level and all that, also the overall mood.
It's just a matter of feeling. Let me conclude by saying that without a
doubt I LOVE the Great Divide and that, even yough I said I didn't like
the vocalist too much, I do start to appreciate him after a couple of
listens. Looks like I should check out Styx:-)

These are pretty simple: PA stands for "public address" or, to be more
basic, the loudspeakers at a concert. A PA system is used for whenever
sound has to be played "to the public", as it were.

RTK would be "Raise the Knife", if I'm not mistaken? Something which I've
    never heard, though...

And finally, BTW means "by the way," as in, "by the way, I think that
blouse you're wearing would look much better rolled up in a ball on my
    bedroom floor."

I am glad to see at least one person liked the idea of getting Dream Theater
on MTV. I first posted the message that people should go down to the studio
and hold signs representing Dream Theater. I know some of you say that MTV
is a shitty station and that it only appeals to the pop generation. But to
me Dream Theater has an extreme amount of talent and I think they deserve a
little more. I doubt we can get their video played, but my idea was just to
get their name out to more people in the US. I am sure metal fans would be
taken into the DT sound. It's only a matter of time.

To clarify what I think Mr. Greets is trying to state. He means heavy as in
the Marty McFly, "Whoah, this is getting pretty heavy, Doc" statement in
which Doc Brown would inevitably reply, "Heavy? Gravity is not the issue
    here, Marty!"

Whereas it is merely a slang adjective used to represent the extremity of a
situation, not actually referring to weight, mass, density, not any other
physical attribute. Maybe deeper might be a more correct adjective?
Perhaps. Penisinvagina. But the extent upon how "deep" a band can be
    varies from person to person.

Not to put a damper on anything but...

I've written to numerous rock and "alternative" radio stations about playing Dream Theater, Savatage, and some other very good Americam metal/hard rock bands. When they bother to reply, it's usually along the lines of..."Thank you for your email, but you need to understand that we are running a business, and no one likes Savatage or Dream Theater." Others have replied in less than friendly tones telling me to take my 80's loving ass and make my own radio station to play my "dead" metal music.

Dream Theater is a great band. All of us here realize that, but this country (USA) is a trendy ass bastard, in every respect from music to clothes. I would live in Sweden where In Flames' Colony debuted at #38 on the Billboards, and Dimmu Borgir wins a Grammy, because I'm really sick of this disgusting surge of New Kids On The Block wannabes (namely the Backdoor Boys), wussy alternative bands singing about the rain, and the r&b/rap music you can't get away from.

Besides, metal fans have already given up on MTV. If they did play "Pull Me Under" or a newer video, we'd all miss it! :)

One day, as a joke, a bunch of jokesters online requested New Kids "Hangin tough" and eMpTyV played it as well as "Ice Ice Baby" on a seperate occasion. This TRL shit would be an interesting way to fuck with the brainwashed Korn fans of america (BKFA). Just go to mtv.com and find the query and VOTE FOR OFB!~

Well, I think the biggest reason is because of funding. I don't think that Magna Carta funds any of its bands at all for touring. Now, touring can be great, yes. Sell merchandise, make money from admittance and such, but the problem is, touring takes quite a bit of overhead that alot of people can't afford to pay out of their own pockets (mobilization of alot of equipment, gas, lodging, creating merchandise to sell). I don't see how Enchant ever did it. AFAIK, they were about the only group from MC that ever really toured, but even then, it wasn't much. Just a couple of dates in the California area and a short time opening for DT last year in Europe.

What funding Enchant had for this I can only assume came from Inside Out maybe, their distributor in Europe. *shrugs* But then, on Shadow Gallery's part, they've never really had a drummer until this last album, as well. Hopefully this latest guy sticks around. :) -- KorgX3 NP: Savior Machine - Carnival of Souls.mp3

They opened for Dream Theater during the Fix for '97 mini tour in Europe. And in 1998 they opened for Spock's Beard and a few times for Marillion...both also in Europe.

I know, 'cuz I was there. ;-) The coolest thing was when Steve Rothery (Marillion's brilliant guitarist) got up on stage and jammed with Enchant in Rotterdam...

Oooh, yah. :) I've often wondered what the relationship between Steve and Enchant is... Considering he produced half of the songs on their first album, he must be friends with someone in the band, or a cool uncle, or something. :) -- KorgX3 NP: Toto - Rosanna.mp3

(hang with me, there's a point, eventually)

screwing around on ebay, got me a 15 tape metal band lot....some of the stuff i had before, like QR-Empire, Savatage-Edge of thorns, and fates warning - perfect symmetry (so if you've been looking for cassette versions of those.....)

i also got stuff from bands i know about but don't have anything from, like anthrax, armored saint, and testament (if that m-band sold out, what do you call what Alex Skolnick has done?)

the best category, of course, is the stuff from bands i've never heard of, like Riot, Fifth Angel, and Toxik....the riot tape is damn cool, what with a cover of DiMeola's race with devil on a spanish highway, plenty of samples running in and out of their songs, and a kind of proto-metalprog thing going on (just tendencies, mind you, most people would probably write that off as metalhead overindulgences)

but i want to ask if anyone know anything about the band toxik....i got two of their tapes, both roadrunner records product from the late 80s....even though i'm not too big on their music, i regained a measure of respect when i read some of the people they thanked in their liner notes....on one tape, it included Bill and Opus - Deathtongue (i've many times expressed my appreciation of the work of one Berkely Breathed on this forum and many others)

and on the other, on a tape released in 1989, they thank a band called "Dream Theatre".......anyone know any story about how that came about? a tour together in the early days, perchance, or common Berklee roots, maybe? Mr. Portnoy?

i just mentioned Skolnick in the last post, as a reference to his going from metallica style thrash with Testament in the 80s (good stuff, say I) to funky jazz stylings (if what i hear about attention deficit is true -- haven't heard the disc myself).......

and i was wondering, what is the opposite of selling out? is that something like committing commercial suicide? or is it more like Kevin Moore leaving DT to go do the kind of stuff he really wants to do (in other words, commercial suicide, unless that borders thing works out)

is it possible to be commercially viable while doing the opposite of selling out? I'm of the opinion that any musician that is selling his art is to some degree, no matter how miniscule, selling out some pportioon of his or her soul when it comes time to offer that art out to the world in exchange for monetary reward, but that's just me....

under my theory, does the fact that Great White and Ratt (as heard last night on Rockline (I didn't know Bob Coburn was still alive, frankly)), are still making raucous records even after having basically dropped off of everybody's radars for basically this whole decade, mean that they've accomplished that goal of anti-selloutism?

and as far as DT99 goes, if it's as (subjectively speaking) GOOD as we are hoping it to be, does that automatically doom it to critical and commercial failure? Does the fact that DT is making that album that they've always wanted to make give it that anti-sellout status regardless of whatever creative control they've relinquished due to record company request in the past (anyone remember Desmond Child?)

don't mind me too much, I'm just in one of pseudo-philosophical moods, ranting my way as i stomp on every dandelion patch i can find
