I think you can have a popular song and not sell out.
Take Extreme for example. More Than Words was
hellapopular.
Of course now they're known as a one-hit wonder.
Which is worse? :)

I don't think so!

Hey guys,
Korgy did say:

target
>audience, and the people that listen to them love them for their music, not
>their image. Personally, I think that's gotta be more rewarding than cash
>anyday. :)

>NP: Def Leppard - Euphoria
I agree with everything Korg said here (actually I always agree with
everything he says, he's a scary man and he will get into your head...).
Did anyone else think it was funny that Korgy was talking about sell outs
and listening to Def Leppard....? (no flame intended - I just thought it was
funny).
My definition of "selling out" does not take into account the
popularity/money made stuff. It's about the music. The one thing that, to
me, constitutes a sell out is how you write your songs. I believe that too
many bands (probably through record label preasure) will write a perfectly
good song, then sit with a producer and change this bit or that, rewrite
this part, shorten that solo, repeat that chorus 'till fade out etc. They
write songs to be hits. This is fine for Britney and the BackPassage Boys,
that is what is expected, it's when damn fine rock bands start doing it - it
really pisses me off.
Yeah - whatever,
Dave (a UK jammer - still in Alabama).

Actually, when the album first comes out, the $2.50 goes to repaying
production costs. The band/artist doesn't see any of it until everything is
repayed. The only real money they make at first is on touring.

Um, what? You cant even be serious? There new album is terrible, with ONE
song that really does anything for me and thats "Dead Bodies Everywhere".
I'm sorry, but if you think that the raping they do on there and the cheasy
little singing John Davis and Fred Durst do together in "All in the Family"
sounds like the original KoRn album, you really need to pop it in again and
listen more closely. The entire album has lost its anger, its touch of
destructive feeling. John is running out of things to complain about I guess
and so his ideas are becoming more, well, crappy. Wow . . . same sound, no
way . . .

I don't think DT has done a video yet that doesn't look like it came right
out of 1987. No offense, Mike, but whoever directed all your videos should
be thrashed. Maybe if they had a video worth seeing, it'd be worth trying
to get it played. But DT will probably never make a really cool video,
because it costs money, and why bother if MTV is never going to play it
anyway. And a little tip for them if they try: no more close-ups of
KJLB!!! Seriously. He's the most un-MTV-friendly element of the band
(note, I'm not saying he's bad, just that he's the most likely thing to
make MTV viewers dislike DT), don't shine a spotlight on him. Just make a
video of Mike going nuts on his kit or something...
And how many Korn fans realize, or care how many strings are on those
guitars?

Oh yeah, another interesting connection between two threads, the
guitarist for Saviour Machine (Jeff Clayton) has a Clockwork Orange
tattoo on his left arm, and Eric Clayton (vocalist) lists it as one of
his favourite movies.

Well i think the video for Hollow years is good...but more for a VH-1 type
thing weve mentioned before..but its not cheesy at all..and has nice

Not too mention I think it was directed by Mike himself. I know for sure
that The Silent Man vid was. Now, what was that about the director getting
a thrashing? :) I thought the TSM and HY vids were very good. The ones
prior to that were average early 90's videos. I think the only DT video I'd
consider cheesy is Take the Time. hehehe. but that's it.

One problem: the island's male-to-female ratio. We're talking worse than Alaska's. Can you imagine what the talk shows would be like?
Host: So you were cheating on your boyfriend? Female Guest: Yes. Audience: Oooooohhhh... Guest: Well it's kind of hard not to want to shop around a bit -- there's fifty men to every woman after all. Host: Good point. Let's take a question from the audience. Audience Member: Yeah, I was wondering...are you available Friday? Host: Why don't we bring out the boyfriend and ask him?
See what I mean? At least the bumper music would be good!

There is a video for "Take The Time" too... I saw it on MTV's Headbanger's Ball a few times, here in Europe.
They also had Mike Portnoy as a guest presentor once, instead of Vanessa Warwick... :-)

Emily Dickinson (I think) once said that selling one's art is like selling one's soul.
Therefore, I think we should stop buying DT stuff to save their souls. Ha ha, just kidding!
The only unmistakable sell-out would have to be Metallica. Not that I'm trying to start another Metallica thread. Please no. I really hated that everlasting debate.

I agree whole heartedly. Not to take away from the music of course, but the videos are quite bad. I also agree with the LaBrie comment about the video-unfriendly factor. I would have to rank the videos in order of cheesiness as the following (from cheesiest to best):
1.) Lie - unbelievably bad, especially with the music cuts. The whole sunglass thing is horrendous too. Just plain bad. No offense to anyone, especially anyone in the band who may have produced it, but I just can't even watch it. James' hand movements and all that are terrible, and just in general it's pretty cheezed out.
2.) Pull Me Under - granted, low-budget, "wear your best shirt" thing. I think this would have been an AWESOME video (easily #4), if they just stuck with the concert footage. The whole wolf-boy thing was bad - and that beating heart was atrocious. The edits in the song kinda blow too.
3.) Take the Time - just because of the fact that there were a couple of times where you can see James mess up the words and wasn't in sync with the actual music itself - more of an editing screw-up than anything else. Liked it on the whole though. The burning paper with "dream theater" on it and stuff like that was pretty cool, as well as the rest of the stuff that was intertwined with the footage of them playing.
4.) Silent Man - The video is great, and I think that it would have been a pretty good draw at the time on the video stations.
5.) Another Day - great video, just like how it was done. And the little girl was just adorable. She's definitely gonna be a looker when she grows up (and no, I'm not sick - she's a beautiful kid, that's all, you perverts). Would have been a great video to see on the video channels.
6.) Hollow Years - Best video yet, hands down. A little too much of the close-ups of James, but the whole storyline feel of the video, with the kid in the alley, and the scenes of the band driving around, are just great.
Did I miss any videos?
They're progressively getting better in the video department, no pun intended. I think that their next video should be pretty damn good if the trend stays consistent. I personally would have liked to have seen the unplugged "Speak to Me" come out as a video. Since they didn't release it officially, though, it wouldn't make sense. IMHO, I think that that version of that song is one of the best pieces of music that they have put out since Change of Seasons. But what the hell do I know.

Honestly Mike, I think you guys would get a much better response if you ever came back, I don't know what club you guys played at, but it is very different down here with the House of Blues. People go to metal shows just to go. Hell, there were teeny boppers at Slayer playing airdrums behind me. (I loved it though) :) Just my .02 cents
