As a David Bowie fan, it hurts to say this, but Bowie was the textbook sell-out during the 80's (China Girl era). He fits all of the criteria: -didn't really like style of music he was involved in -change was for the worse -albums started having less time between their releases -was all about money He actually admitted to being a sell-out during those good ol' 80's. I read it somewhere...

I need some Zappa info. There is this Zappa video called THE DUB ROOM SPECIAL, presenting live material both from the old days and some newer ones with Steve Vai, Chad Wackerman etc....

The video starts with Zappa having a phone conversation for a minute or so, and a song starts, as intro for the whole video. I need to know the title of this song and which album is from!!! I know I heard this song, I might even have it but not this version as it is here! I just GOTTA HAVE this stuff, it's awesome!!!

It's great song anyway, but this version here rules, it's more complex and the arrangements are .... no words to express... It's one of those older instrumental Zappa stuff.

You'll do me a great favour with answer! :)

I don't think a person writing a dictionary would be that shameless to do that!

Actually what's all that confusion with:

color - colour neighborhood - neighbourhood

The second are correct ones, but the stupid WORD dictionary gives it as mistake!

I mean c'mon US folks, after all it IS English language! ;)

Many examples of this in my country! We know some giuys were rock heads back in the good ol' days and turned into the commercial crap music just for the money! Heck, otherwise you can't be musician and live from it here! I wish things would change but for now ....

    Hi, folks:

The latest Artist Shop newsletter is out and you'll find it in its entirety at <http://www.artist-shop.com/news.htm>. Here's an excerpt for DT fans!

Come towards the end of August from Magna Carta <http://www.artist-shop.com/magna> is Mullmuzzler/Keep It to Yourself. James LaBrie has seen stunning commercial and critical success throughout the '90's with his band, Dream Theater, that pantheon of progressive rock, this past decade. But gathering steam before the millenium, each and every member of the band has also been busy with side projects. But unlike his bandmates, LaBrie's record is a true solo offering (despite the playful band moniker), perhaps reflecting that special place we hold for both vocalists and lyricists, perhaps reflecting the highly personal place words hold within our heart.

So, with the help of the venerable Terry Brown, producer of Rush's output during the '70's, James built, shaped, then fine-tuned nine distinct, heartfelt and often bombastic tracks, all of them co-writes with an army of the field's hottest creators including members of Shadow Gallery, Matt Guillory of Dali's Dilemma, and Trent Gardner from Magellan and Exploreres Club. So the writers planted the seed and the plaerys made it grow. Towards that end, Jame tapped co-writer and keyboardist Matt Guillory, scary Zappa-orbiting guitarist Mike Keneally and his gravity-defying bassist from Beer for Dolphins, Bryan Beller, plus Mike Mangini (best known for his work with Extreme and Steve Vai) for a little musical witchery down in LA.

The result is a banquet of purifying rock, some of it slamming in a Zeppelin frame of mind, some of it reminiscent of Queen and possibly Styx, some of it simply the most elegant classic rock you will ever hear.

Yeah, that's me too. :) I guess that's why I related to progressive music *so* fast. Gradius, Mega Man, I think all these games had a great sound even with their lack of tech resources...

And it's too bad that most of the game developers nowadays choose techno to make soundtracks. It would be great if they used all these technologies to make a killing prog/metal soundtrack. But maybe I'm asking too much. :(

i just read a story a couple of days ago about another indie flick, created in 1997/98 which contained many of the elements of BWP....the creators of blair witch were apparently amazed at the similarities.....

as for the final countdown, it was the theme music for the Detroit Pistons (intros, halftime, etc) when they were winning in the late 80s, early 90s, so that song will always hold a place in my heart....

Am I the only person who hears Aeris's theme from Final Fantasy 7 in the main piano line to Biaxident? I wonder if I'm the only person who's hearing this. While on the topic of video game music, someone mentioned that most music in games is techno nowadays. Don't play many games by Squaresoft do you? Nobuo Uematsu and Yasunori Mitsuda both write phenominal music that covers a very wide range of styles. Well, I've rambled long enough. You ever play Castlevania: Symphony of the Night for Playstation? It sounds like the music composer was influenced by Danny Elfman, and one of the tracks ("Tragic Prince") reminds me of DT to a scary degree, thought it's served a bit "straight up", probably to make it accessible.

This soundtrack covers a very wide range of styles, from choral to orchestral to jazz to prog.

IMO, one of the best game soundtracks EVER is for Resident Evil 2. It is all orchestral style, and PERFECT event music. I've played that game countless times, and the music still makes my hair stand on end. And just like in horror movies, when there is NO music, you can expect something bad to be coming... I think the subject pertains - is anyone on this list not going to see this movie? :)

Anyway, all i have to say is, NEVER see a horror film in any of NYC's five burroughs. In the movie theaters, there's some kind of phenomenon where, just like everywhere else in the city, everyone feels they can be really obnoxious - just because everyone ELSE is being obnoxious.

What that means is that fuckos kept laughing during all the good parts. And because most people are sheep, it was just 5 or 6 people that would laugh and then the rest of the audience would join in even though usually, there was - objectively - nothing funny just then. There are bits of humor, but most of the time, i'd hear laughter all around me even though me and my 3 friends were not laughing. There was one girl behind us who, no matter how scary the scene was, if someone - ANYONE - laughed, she too would chuckle.

A few of us tried to shush the troublemakers, but you really need the whole audience to support that kind of thing, and since the whole audience was too busy bleating, that didn't happen. Anywhere else, it wouldn't be tolerated, which is why I say it's a phenomenon.

Result: the movie was basically ruined for me by some inconsiderate schmucks and an audience cast straight from the ensemble in Animal Farm. Bleat! Bleat! Build another windmill!

See the movie, but see it in the 'burbs, and try to see it on a school night when there'll be less punks in the audience.

What do you mean grow up playing video gaems? I STILL DO, (im only 19 though) I agree I loved the old NES music. Batman had cool music to it. As far as DT sounding like video games, my firneds thought differently: I was listening to Ytsejam with friends in the car, and the short drum ended. Right after that the band plays then stops for a sec. They said it sound like scene cutting musci from Saved by the Bell. One "What Kelly left Zak", then the band chimed in. It was a funny moment, but pissed me off. The other guy was talking in Japanese yelling "akira" every 5 secs. Some people will never learn.

These bands are NOT selling out, they are simply developing. We have to face the fact that Metallica has been playing together for almost 2 decades. They absolutely cannot keep playing the same as Puppets or Justice...they would quit out of sheer boredom. I'll also say that I hate load and reload with a passion. There are only two good songs on each album.

But think about it this way: If Load was released by a completely different brand new band, would it not be a good, solid rock album?

We are simply used to comparing new material to old material. Many bands have been changing, it's a natural process. These musicians are maturing musically. Anathema, Iced Earth, Metallica, Savatage, and many more all are completely different from their initial releases. I don't think that is necessarily a bad thing. Some changes are good, some are bad, all depending on your tastes.

To me, selling out would be if Metallica went Backstreet Boys on us. Wouldn't that be much, much worse? :)

Hey, COME ON !! The songs maybe sound comercial, = but i=20 guess that's the way the bands go on. Hoe you can get today's band to = play even=20 more heavy? Every body gonna put high B's on their guitars, or even put = high=20 G's? 8 strings guitars? I guess the bands have&nbsp;to take a path that = can=20 provide going on. If DT keep making albuns exactly like "Awake", or = Metallica=20 keep making albuns exactly like "... And Justice For All", 's gonna be = the most=20 boring stuff. Ok, if they go to the hardest way, they'll became Slayers = or Grip.=20 Incs., and gonna make no diference buying one or the other.</FONT></DIV> <DIV>&nbsp;</DIV> <DIV><FONT size=3D2>Well, that's what it think. </FONT></DIV> <DIV>&nbsp;</DIV> <DIV><FONT size=3D2>Carpe Diem</FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT size=3D2>Ytsejammer</FONT></DIV></BODY></HTML>
