Yes, "Black" remains one of my favorite Pearl Jams ever. Absolutely stunning in concert, BTW.

    > Eric Johnson - Pavillion

[sic] I believe it's "Pavilion." ;-) Anything by EJ has the ability to floor me; the G3 show in Atlanta a while back had that effect. _Venus Isle_ is definitely my most-played EJ album. Wow, I could keep gushing over that *tone*!... Another great song is "Desert Rose," although the "Pavilion"-> "Venus Reprise" segue is also quite breathtaking...

    > Les Miserables - On My Own

Funny, I'm not a big fan of this music in this musical. Why, I dunno. Perhaps it just doesn't strike me as does Haydn's Cello Concerto No. 1 in C-major. Or Mendellssohn's "The Hebrides" Overture ("Fingal's Cave"), Op. 26, for that matter. ;-) But it is a *fantastic* musical.

The only other musical that has near the devastating effect is "RENT," which I've seen on and off Broadway sixteen times (that's obssession! ;-). Still not a groupie, though...

    > Pink Floyd - Terminal Frost...

Good song, although I would have picked "Echoes" or "High Hopes" (pretty diverse, eh?). The music in the former is astoundingly similar to a Mendellssohn piece; the latter's lyrics are simply dashing.

Of course, I'm beating a dead horse, but DT's "Space-Dye Vest" is a pretty darned emotional song, too. Several songs on Pain of Salvation's _One Hour by the Concrete Lake_ also qualify. Come to think of it, the music on Royal Hunt's double live disc set is amazing, and the crowd interaction is preserved, too, which should make some of y'all's (is that legal? ;-) day... The Mahavishnu Orchestra has some amazing stuff, too; _Between Nothingness & Eternity_ (just recently released as "The Lost Sessions" in studio form) has some spine-tingling passages. Miles Davis's "Tribute to Jack Johnson" is also stellar (I think Phish borrows quite a bit from the first song)...

*Nothing*, however-- and I do stress nothing-- will ever top Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 in c-minor, Op. 18. I watched a video of Van Cliburn (sp?) perform this piece (at the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition?) many, many moons ago and was/is captivated. Oh, the wings on the ivories...

A bit more than my usual $.02 this time 'round... ;-)

Agreed... John's, IMHO, the best guitarist out there now...

    >I was just wondering what everyone considers to be the most stirring >or >emotional piece of music that they have ever experienced. What has >really >got you stirred up for whatever reasons??

Like Korg wrote, PJ's "Black" is a hell of a song, very emotional... John's solo in "Through Her Eyes" is also very touching... Mr. Crowley, in the Tribute album, sounds incredibly powerful to me... And seeing Page & Plant play Kashmir in the Un-Ledded tour was probably the most emotional one... There also others, but these are the ones I remember...

    >He also played drums with U2 on the song "real thing" on the MTV >video >awards back in about 92.

Yeah... U2 songs are not really hard to follow, but that was quite impressive... And Dana Carvey is a fairly good drummer... The Wayne's World thing is the best display of that...

You OR Me is ASTRONOMICALLY better than You NOT Me. Contrary to the above statement, YOM grooves much harder and better than the studio YNM. The chorus fits a lot better and is making for a lot more coherent song without the break and the key change. The lyrics are better in the chorus, too.

You see? It works either way. I, in fact, like the old version a lot better, but that doesn't make me someone who doesn't know about good songs. Taste differs, people, and if you can't live with that, keep your mouth shut and your fingers still, please.

OK, but I think that there's a difference between giving the song an improvement over the original arrangement (like they did with the other songs in FII) and giving the song really significant changes, like completely changing the chorus section in the case of YOM. I think it would be much cooler if there was a re-worked YOM version with the original chorus and bridge sections.

I'd have to throw in my two bits and either say "Nora" from Kevin Moore's demo stuff, or Extreme's "Who Cares" from 3 sides to a story...I guess it's just some wacked personal thing but those two songs still give me goosebumps every time I hear them

Im sorry i just have to disagree, Slash's solos are sloppy and unoriginal. The only solos worth a damn are the ones on the ballads and even then its just basic stuff. Live? He seems to be tone deaf. I dont know but maybe i just dislike him so much because he is SO friggin overrated. Hes prolly the most overrated guitar player out there, aside from Kirk Hammet, who used to be good, and now is a sloppy mofo. And no im not a technical nazi...my favorite JP solos are the ones in slow songs, like one last time, spirit carries on, and my personal favorite : impact 2 on AOI. If sloppy pentatonic unoriginal blues guitar is your cup of tea..then slash rips..

Here here! (or is it hear hear) This is one of my all time most emotional songs for me.. anyone who thinks pearl jam is a bunch of grunge wankers must listen to this song..its soo awesome in a heart wrenching kind of way. My other moments and this being i think my most stirring one..would be the end of ACOS...the whole I sit down with my son part. That is also oh so brutal. Now in the negative side of emotion i could say anything from Meshuggah will do the trick. (mental note: do not drive while being angry and listening to meshuggah).

Whoah! I'm on the other side of the argument to Richie! I certainly wasn't expecting that to happen! I'll be arguing with Korg, Jon Parmet and Jon Kretchmer next.

First: I love Desmond Child's work with Bon Jovi and Alic Cooper. If I think of Living on a Prayer, Poison, Let It Rock, I'm thinking of really catchy choruses, totally superb break/key changes and huge singalongability. Can you really croak along to James going 'It's all about you, not me'? I don't want to yell along in falsetto.

I don't know where the hook is in YNM. 'That's all right, that's ok' shows signs of Desmond Child, but it's not in the same league (as a break/hook, rather than lyrically) as the 'We gotta hold on to what we got, it doesn't make a difference if we make it or not' bit or the 'I want to kiss you but your lips are venomous Poison' or the 'It's all right/If you want to cross that line, break on through to the other side/Let It Rock!'. I HAVE to sing along to those. YNM makes my throat seize up just listening to it. So much for a key change!

Granted, the solo was 'uneconomic' (I liked it, but I can see that a producer would want to cut it back) but no more so than LTE. And I loved the bass at the beginning of the track and beneath the solo. It would be interesting to hear what the guys think, now that they don't have to plug FII. After all, Derek was saying he was more catholic than the Pope as far as writing prog was concerned, while the others were all huddling with Desmond Child. Did MP ever come back on that? Do DT think that YNM was an improvement?

Styx - Show Me The Way

It was mainly due to the video and where I was at that time in my life. Grandparents are just the coolest people ever created.

It's 'Lubbock',the city where I grew up...I was at that show, and the KingsX tune was one of MANY short 'covers' that the band did that night, I wish I could remember them all. I belive this was because Derek's rig lost power, so they had to improvise. James sang a couple covers, Mike did some, Derek sang and played guitar on one song...and Mike's drum tech came out and sang as well....all covers. I think James got a little pissed after awhile, he came back on stage, looked at mike, then said to the crowd something along the lines of 'how would you like to hear some DREAM THEATER music??'

Warning here!! You need at least 300-500 hours of burn in on cables. After this time you will notice the soundstaging will improve, tighter more extended bass, sweeter treble etc. etc. If you are connecting a CD player or DAC to your amp I recommend an attenuated cable, especially if it is an older amp. Kimber do one that is "reasoably" priced, from £50-£415 per meter pair.

Also what Al says about cbles sounding differnt is true. The more money you pay the better, more transparent the cable etc. Upward of say £100 ($160) per meter of interconnecters you are buying "character cables." These you buy to get a patricular characteristic to help even you systems sound.

The most effective upgarde though is upraging mains power with a audophile didribution block and power leads.

A real cheap trick also is to colour the edge of the CD with a perminant green pen. Think I am crazy? It cuts down on internal reflection sin the CD improving clarity, soundstaging, extended bass etc. If you don't believe me try it, you will thank me if you do! ;)

Still i have never heard a Cd palyer I like, not even the top of the range Krells(£25,000.) Give me my SME 10 turntable any day!

If any of you want to improve your sound system for very little there a real cool site. That I got a lot of ideas from. Lokk under the Tip, tweaks and DIY section.

    a) You Not Me grooves harder. Much, much harder. I actually like the song; I hated it when I first heard it ("Shit. DT's lost it. This album's gonna suck."), but the song grew on me more and more to become one of the more-played tracks on FII (and the album didn't suck, to my relief).

Andrew, you forgot to mention that at midnight, the perfect woman turns into a roast beef sandwich and a six pack. And she's also a blind deaf nymphomaniac who owns her own liquor store, has a huge trust fund, and season tickets to <enter name of favorite sports team here>.

Well, the reason she's got a flat head, obviously, is so that you can rest your beer on top of it. The having no teeth thing speaks for itself - but the reason she's got big ears is so you have something to grab onto. ;)

A trust fund and being a blind-deaf nympho would be nice too, however, I could do without the sports tickets. Turn them into season tickets to the Met and I'll consider your deal. :)

hi! just a quick one... As I'm purchasing a hell-of-alot Cds in this time of year (as usual) I also need alot of recommendations. I know, I know, I'm bugging the living crap out of you cause all that I've been posting in the last month were "anyone heard this?" type-of-posts. Well, here's another one... :-))). As the subject says, this time it's about Gordian Know. Now, I know Sean Malone and Sean Reinert played on that album, I even heard a few clips (Rivers Dancing) but if someone has it in posession and is willing to elaborate on the "masterpiece" I'd be more than grateful... So, thanx ALOT!

p.s. I'm waiting for my copy of TSO - CE&OS and Explorers Club - Age Of Impact... :-)). That better be good! In case I don't post anything in the next few days...
