Hey Fellow Jammerz,
Alot has been said recently about "feeling" and the emotion that is carried
forward in music. I guess it's a fairly personal thing given that each
person would have a different "emotional" experience depending on where they
were and what was going on in their life at the time when the were really
into a particular album or song.
I was just wondering what everyone considers to be the most stirring or
emotional piece of music that they have ever experienced. What has really
got you stirred up for whatever reasons??
For me personally, those songs/albums are:
Operation:Mindcrime - Queensryche
Awake - Dream Theater (especially SDV, LSOAD)
SFAM - Dream Theater (this cd has really sucked me in)
Fates Warning - Parallels
Conception - Flow
Stay Metal,
Paul.

Jeez. Not to burst anyone's bubble but anymore I'm thinking that the most
dispensable member of DT is DT itself. If they go through any more lineup
changes they might as well throw in the towel. :P
If someone says James, I have news for them. Singers are the No. 1 most
identifiable member of ANY band. If DT ever replaced James, they'd have a
very, very difficult time climbing back up (if they ever could).
It's not like band members are elected officials or anything.

I agree, I love Kevin Morre's lyrics, particularly Space Dye Vest. The worst lyrics IMO are in You Not Me, but I toss that up to Desmond Child's "interference." For example, in the original demo version, the first line was "Peopl round here are driving me crazy." This isn't a great line or anything but it was replaced (presumably by Desmond) with "Being round you is driving me crazy." He completely changed the lyrics into typically cheesy relationship lyrics that you can hear on any generic top 40 hit. -Mike C.

As an excercise similar to imagining the perfect girl of my dreams, I hav= e always imagined what would be the composition of an hypothetical perfect prog band.
Since I was a very young boy, during more than 25 years (added terry Bozz= io after UK discovery some years latter)my ideal super prog band was:
Peter Gabriel: Vocals Chris Squire: Bass Steve Howe: Rythm Guitars Robert Fripp: Guitars Bill Brufford & Terry Bozzio:Drums David Cross: Violins Keith Emerson: Keyboards
Today, after Explorers Club LTE 1 & 2, Scenes from a Memory and Mullzmull= er I have made great changes on my ideal band. Now the members are:
James La Brie: Vocals Chirs Squire: Bass John Petrucci: Lead Guitars Robert Fripp: Guitar Synth Steve Howe: Acoustic Guitars Mike Portnoy & Pat Mastelloto: Drums David Cross: Violins Jordan Rudess: Keyboards
As you can see, nearly all DT is in my ideal band. What a revolution!!. I missed John Myung. Anyway I think he is one of the greatest bass player= s of the world and one of DT masters at the same level of the other members= , but Squire for me is like God with the bass.
All the best,
Jos=E9

Argh! Enough already! Between killing Mike with a bloodied axe and stomping all over DS, I think I've lost my mind. Wait, I *read* those, heh.
<soapbox>No member of DT is dispensable. DT loses a bit of itself (if one can imagine it as a conscious entity) with every personnel change, but who is to say that the loss is not a gain? Seeing another personnel change in DT may be inevitable (oh, how I wish not!), but the loss of any one of the current members would be like losing the ability to comprehend. Although _Awake_ remains my most-played DT release, I think with _SfaM_ they have recaptured that "mood" that so defines the quintessential *Dream Theater*. Imagine the Dixie Dregs without Steve or Rod, GN'R without Axl, eMpTyV without Kid Rock or Limp Bizkit or Britney Spears (or N'Sync for that fact, because the Backstreet Boys really *can* sing ;-)... some are hopeless, some are idiotic, some are things for which we never wish... With that in mind, my answer is that there is no dispensable member of our fav band. Period.</soapbox>
For something more suitable to this holiday spirit, I'm currently poring over Pain of Salvation's _One Hour by the Concrete Lake_. These guys are brilliant, technically and creatively.
They almost compare to that epic I'm playing currently, Final Fantasy 8 (woo-hoo, I'm on the third disc finally!). ;-)

I didn't know anything about the scrambled stuff in the JP video. I taped it for a friend and tho it was in NTSC format, have successfully copied to another tape in PAL. Since my VCR isn't a hightech one, so now and then there are some disterbances but other than that it came out quite good.
For both recording and playback I used multi system VCp/r and my tv is also multi system, but of them are just stock sony, national and some other godforsaken brand

The CD is pretty cool I guess. The sound of the band is good really well mixed. It doesn't give the feel of an actually show, but that's understandable. If youo have ever seen GNR they went some nights w/o playing Sweet Child o' Mine or other "big" hits. The playing is good, Slash rips ass like always, Estranged and Nov Rain are sweet. Axl could jam on a piano too. I don't think any metal/prog/rock CD collection should be complete without a live CD of any band as big as GNR was.
I got some CD's today from Xmas from my dad: Ty Tabor-1st solo album Sepultura-Against (No Max though) Van Halen-Fuck COC-Deliverence
I also bought for myself a QR Operation Livecrime CD (by itself for 6.99) Mines a little scratched, and this one you can eat off of.

Mike Mangini is a polyrhytmic king. I know what he can do but if he would do this stuff in a gig or so, 95% of the people would think it was some brutal mistake. It's like Simon Philips said once. "I made two mistakes on my gig and afterward people were asking me 'How the hell you did that? It was brilliant...'" :-) It's like Miles Davis would play C minor over C major triad and it would sound cool. But if anyone else would do that , it would be a mistake.

Same thing when another friend bought tix in Turku, they said it's going to be an amphitheater. So I hope things in Jyvaskyla won't get completely screwed now if they sell the wrong tickets... Can't-remember-who-said:
'Not to say SFAM doesn't kick ass though - I go bonkers at the end of Finally Free, and I think James is at his height on this disc - For a kicker, for those of you that have it, go back and listen to the classic bootleg "The Dance of Eternity" and check out James' voice. It's hilarious. :) What disappoints me about SFAM, since you asked, is that save for the very end of FF, there are few moments like the crescendo in LTL, the solo in LiTS, the solo in Scarred, etc. ....... Perhaps I was so used to DT writing shit that I'd NEVER heard before, possibilities that I didn't think existed, and now I'm kinda disappointed because I wasn't knocked out of my socks. The disc rocks, absolutely, but it is a "reserved" awesomeness. Maybe I'm older. More jaded. Who knows. But I still want another I&W. :)'
-oOo- I'm with you. That's the best summary of my feelings about SFAM. Sure, it's nodding towards the things I like, but it's too near film background music than stop-and-gape accomplishment like I&W. I also agree about Awake being too heavy and uncatchy.
Now: my recipe for the definitive FII mix (IMHO):
Remove BMS, AL, TAMP, maybe JLMB. Add TWIUTB (the song that should have been the single). Replace YNM with YOM (the beat is so much better, the chorus is better, especially James; everyone grooves so much more. I really like Desmond Child's other efforts and his skill in manufacturing hits - how did he fall down on the job so badly this time?).
As amended, this FII is second only to I&W, with ACOS, SFAM, Awake and WDADU to follow.
Someone mentioned John Cage's 4'33". I'm still laughing about when The Cow God said "My band are going to play 4'33" at double speed. 'Cause we're all that."

I wsa fortunate enough to see Mangini in concert whilst on Extremes Waiting for the punch line tour. I have to state now that it wsa the best live drum sound I have ever heard! In his solo I remember he did this four part polyrythem ie on time signature per limb. I attened teh gig with a drummer and he thought about giving up after seeing and hearing that!
However there is a diffrence between wrtiing and playing. I do not think that Mangini could write parts that fitted with DT as well as Mike does. Mangini is more of a Prog Rock where as MP is more prog metal. Anyone for Bruford in Pantera? :}
Any way, generally the best drummers are from Jazz. Billy Cobham, I salute you! (Now thats a polyrythmic dude.) With MP I think I could play along without counting, no way with Cobham too freaky. DISCLAMER. Iam not claiming to be a musical genius here mearly statig an opinion based on what I have heard.

Just in case you have not seen this on the news yet....
This year the Winter Solstice, December 22 -- the longest night of the year,
will be extremely special. This is because the solstice will coincide with a
Full Moon. Ah, but not just any Full Moon. The Moon will be within a few hours of its perigee, its closest point to the
Earth. This will make the Moon appear to be about 14% bigger than usual. However, it is also only ten days from the Earth's perihelion, its Closest point to the Sun. Since the Moon shines with reflected sunlight, then the moon will appear 7% brighter than usual. These events occurring together are extremely rare. This is probably the biggest, brightest moon of the Millennium as well as its last. That makes it a rare night indeed. Whatever you do, get out and look at the sky. You will never see a Moon like this again.

Hi all
first off, keep those top 10 of 99 lists coming. The more input I get, the more representative the results will be. You've still got 11 more days to decide. Some people have asked me how I've voted - in the interests of a fair poll, I won't tell you which albums were on my list until after the results are out.
Once more I have to tip my hat to the wisdom of good ol' Al. This weekend I replaced the cables I use to connect up my stereo (not the speaker cables - they are already pretty good). I spent about DM 300 (approx. US $ 150) and the difference is quite amazing. Lots more detail, a smoother overall tone and feel. Well worth it, and something I would recommend to anybody else who is considering making this move. But I can't help feeling this will get very expensive in the end...

No man, I think you misunderstood my point... I didn't say that because I'm worried Mike will read the jam, see people are talking about who could fill his shoes, and angrily tell the jam that ytsejammers are banned from DT's concerts... What I meant is that reading the jam makes Mike the closest member of the band to us (well, to me at least, a non-US jammer who doesn't get to see him play as often as American jammers do), and to me, that means a lot, actually reading what fans write here, and that by doing that, his importance in the band is bigger than just his playing...

That's pretty limiting there. I bet you've listened to several songs on the radio and not realized the drums were programmed, or listened to a song and complained that the drums were programmed only to find they were real drums. With people starting to use electronic drums (i.e. Roland V-Drums) more and more it's going to be harder and harder to tell what's done by a real drummer and what's not. A good drum programmer >can< program 'feel' into his patterns. I can do it on my touch sensitive keyboard. I can adjust the dynamics, scatter the tom hits a bit if I want so they're not perfectly on beat. With a good patch generator, alot of TLC, and a good input device, anyone can program drums with feeling.
Saying you can't is like saying playing a keyboard has no feeling compared to playing something on a piano. *thwap* Don't be such a closed-minded twit. :) -- KorgX3 como tu, tu no sabes ni la "u." NP: Pain of Salvation - One Hour by the Concrete Lake

Fellow YTSEJAMMERS,
I have been on the mailing list for the past 3 or 4 months and have really enjoyed being on the list. In addition to learning new things about OFB, I have been introduced to some bands I would never even have known about. Bands that don't get played on the radio because they have to play crap like NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, etc...
Anyway, I'm not sure if I heard about this band from here or possibly on The Progressive Rock Ring, but the name of the band is Dresden and their album is entitled "The Day That Neil Armstrong Died". Excellent music and lyrics, great playing, and very good lead vocals. Sometimes they remind me of TOOL. I just went to their website which I remembered as being very cool, but it looks like they're doing some construction on it. They're at www.dresdenband.com in case you're interested. Very highly recommended! Just wondering, but the name of their drummer is Sean Enright which sounds very familiar to me. Is there any reason why? Any info would be appreciated.

Try "Eggzooming" from Mike Keneally and Beer For Dolphin's "Sluggo". Not a lot, but mind-blowing.

And without Charlie D. it wouldn't be Dream Theater either...So what do we have right now?
We have Dream Theater (v4.0). We've had four different configurations of Dream Theater. ANY member could be replaced, it would just be a different DT. Even with the exact same members, a band changes over time.
What if Petrucci had left after Awake and been replaced by Reb Beach? Or Steve Vai? Or Micheal Romeo? Would we still be listening? Yes. Would we have a never ending debate over which guitar player we liked better? Yes. Would it still be DT? Yes.
