All I've heard of Mangini is pretty straight as well. This doesn't mean he couldn't be the present King of Sick. 99% of what I've heard of Colaiuta in the last 10 years is pretty straight. And I know for a fact he's one of the Sickest guys on Earth. I did see a clinic of his many years ago, at some benefit for Mark Craney. (According to Steve Vai, the famous "Colaiuta eating sandwich while sight-reading the Black Page on audition" legend is factual.) Alas, however exciting 13 over 11 over 5 may sound to an ear predisposed to fractional temporality, I imagine it probably doesn't exactly pay the bills in this rotten dog eat god world. :)

    Greetings jammers...

    Phil Carter wrote:

Make that "almost impossible"... Not many musicians are as cool as MP is.. JP is also very cool... The guy's one of the nicest people I've met... But no one compares to Mike in that aspect...

Kurt M Hampton, later in the same jam, wrote:

    >Why let the man who provides >so much pleasure and enjoyment in our life, and who's music has >really >become the backbone of our lives (well for me) read this crap.

Amen... DT has become a major part of my life, and Mike is, IMVHO, the "foundation", so to speak, of OFB... So even if there are drummers who are more technically gifted than Mike, which BTW, there aren't many, no way they could replace the vibe that he brings to the band...

All of this to say I really can't believe this discussion even came up... I know the guy who first posted about this is knew to the jam, I think he said that was his first post to the jam, so I'm assuming he wasn't aware of the fact that Mike reads the jam, or that Mike cares about the fans so much as he does, apart from being an amazing player... IMHO, and I guess most people here will agree with me, Mike's importance in the band is bigger than just his playing...

On to another subject, some people have posted their opinions of Guns'n'Roses' new album, that live one... Could anybody tell me, privately if you prefer, how the band's overall performance is? 'Cause someone said Axl is Axl, that the noise crowd is obviously fake, but I can't recall someone mentioning how the band's playing goes...

And on to my last question: I was reading the booklet in ACOS and the band thanks the "on-line 'Ytse-Jammers' who helped make this recording finally become a reality"... What did the jam have to do with ACOS?

Whew... I'm done now, sorry for such a long post...

    Later, Adriano

People here are saying let's replace Mike in DT and see what happens. I say that replacing one person can make a difference. Let's say we replace Mike with Phil Collins or John with Angus Young. Then Dream Theater would NOT be Dream Theater. The people that are in the band are there cause they fit into the style they want. Although it would be funny to see the kind of music Angus Young and Phil Collins would make together. Or we could get the man formerly known as Prince and Edward Van Halen together. My point is that without Mike, John, and John it wouldn't be Dream Theater and to add a bit of humor to it as well. The Wizard

    >< I was just wondering what was the general consensus with regards to DT lyrics. What is generally considered to be the best effort. I can't isolate a particular piece but I have to say that I think Awake was the strongest album. My reasons for this: the imagery employed seemed to push my buttons so to speak. (BTW I am not Christian.) Any other thoughts? ><

I think the album with the best overall lyrics was I&W, with my personal favorite being WFS. But from start to finish, the whole album is lyrically flawless. Awake is definitely good too, except for The Mirror, with my personal favorites being 6:00, LSOAD, Scarred, and SDV. ACOS was okay lyrically, neither amazing nor awful, though I know it is a very personal song to MP. I think James's delivery on that album was particularly moving. FII was hit or miss. I either loved the lyrics (LiTS, which is my second favorite DT lyric, TAMP) or hated them (BMS, YNM). SFAM is sort of an outlier. The lyrics have to support an overall story, so it's sort of hard to judge them on their own. But particular standouts are Strange Deja Vu, Finally Free, and Through Her Eyes.

anybody else consider that the echolyn news posted just above this tidbit was far more interesting? Wonder whatever happened to Tom Hyatt (Hiatt?)....and wonder what the deal is with "drummer/percussionist Jordan Perlson", when Paul Ramsay, according to that same news tidbit is still involved in the project?

Anyway....thought I might let you know about an absolutely GREAT disc i got in the mail today....."Into the Dream", live stuff from Discipline.

I expected great things from this, seeing as how their last disc "Unfolded Like Staircase" is my all time fave disc, but at first listen, "Into the Dream" has met and maybe even surpassed those expectations. It is, unlike almost all "live" discs released by big labels, an honest live effort, warts and all (not that there are many warts, they are excellent musicians)....there's just a sense that there wasn't much studio work done on this after the fact.

And Matthew Parmenter is absolutely chilling on this CD....some really cool vocals on the ULS disc, but he gets really scary on the song "Into the Dream" on this live disc....really giving free rein to the repressed rage expressed in that songs lyrics.

It's going to be high on my year end list, probably not number one because it's not a continuous show, but single songs with pauses in between, and minimal crowd (just intro and outro claps, i guess I like a little more response in my live stuff, maybe I'm spoiled by the good crowd boots, where the crowd's energy is just transmitted through the headphones, without ever getting in the way of the music)

But musically, "Into the Dream" is sure to end up among my favorite live products....and I can't believe that I haven't seen Discipline live in over 4.5 years (when they opened for, coincidentally, Echolyn) I HAVE to get to one of those shows....

anyway....long story short, an amazing disc is Discipline's "Into the Dream"

Supwitchall-- Of course drum machines suck compared to the real deal, but you can apparently do a pretty authentic job with them. Case in point: I recorded an 8-minute Metal epic fairly progressive blah blah blah song basically to get played on the radio to advance my standings with some girl. I did guitars, bass, and vox, but I can't play drums and I don't even know where my band's drummer is at the moment, so I recorded the drum track on a drum machine. Well, there's a band where I live (Athens, GA) who is very big locally called Five O'Clock Shadow. I've never heard them because most all Athens music sucks (except for us of course :), but I'd heard their name all the time (they've played the biggest places around here and get played on the radio all the time, etc.). Anyway, apparently their guitarist and vocalist heard me on the radio and were blown away---especially by my amazing drumming. The guitarist e-mailed me and said, "We were very impressed with your music, and most importantly your drumming! Five O'Clock shadow is stagnating right now, and we were planning to start something new, in a heavier direction. We'd like you to be our drummer!!!" I got one heck of a kick out of that. Had to e-mail the dude back and break the news to him: fast double bass--it's all in the fingers!! Oh well, I thought the whole situation was pretty funny.

Just so you know the star in Steve Vais band is Steve Vai. When you listen to the cd you do not get to see what Mangini can do. You must go see him in concert, making it look very easy. I have seen DT and Vai in concert and they are both awesome. You cannot replace MP but Mangini is the master with rhythm. goto Vais site and check the link to Manginis page or goto www.mikemangini.com. Check out his Rhythm Knowledge clinic tapes. As i always say thats just my opinion... but i think you must see both in concert to make a decision. Talk to you later PS ---MP is awesome and DT would not be DT without him

I, too, believe KevMo is a brilliant lyricist. My quintessential DT album remains _Awake_ in light of _SfaM_ because the songs penned by KevMo are astounding. "6:00" is great, but "Space-Dye Vest" is so very stirring.

Hrm, I think I'm going to pop that in now. Thanks, Neil... ;-)

i've never really understood how that changes anything... if he didnt read the jam i still wouldnt assume that anything you say here is safe from his ears... on the same note, i dont think we need to act like awed fans and worship him daily. i think he's a kickass drummer, and all that, but im sure he gets tired of everyone turning into yes men when he's around. i would if i were in his position, anyway.

If Portnoy left the band, I think Phil Carter would be the best replacement. After all, he has doubtlessly spent many hours pounding on his couch with knitting needles, and has probably even tapped a tupperware lettuce crisper or a coffee can, or even two in his day. Yes, Phil Carter would be a damn fine replacement. He could call us Jamnoids, and we could call him Al....

Not to add fuel to the fire, but the answer is obvious, right now it would be jordan rudess..as he is the newest member, and his contributions to the band in the writing aspect of the music has yet to be established. And through the years it has always been the keyboard player whos been dispensable enough to change twice..

now disclaimer : im not saying they should replace any member with anyone, BUT in this case, i felt that the answer is clearly obvious..
