Greetings ye 'jamanoids......
I think something that just about everyone's overlooking is something that
would suck a lot more if Mike Portnoy (perish the thought) ever left DT.
There wouldn't be one quarter the band interaction with the fans!!!!
Portnoy is one of the most outgoing and gregarious people I've ever met,
and to have that sort of personality in a "rock musician" these days is
something of a rarity. It's so great to have the drummer hanging out after
the show and chatting with all the fans, only to get practically dragged
onto the bus because they were about to leave without him. :)
No. It would be damn hard to find somebody with the combination of chops,
songwriting skill, rhythm, AND total damned friendliness to fans that Mike
brings to the group. Let's all rejoice in the fact that we have Mikey P
behind the kit!

As for Tomas Haake being a polyrhythmic king, Haake himself views his
playing a lot differently (Tomas Haake). He had an interview in Modern
Drummer (Oct. '99) where he basically discusses some of the difficulties
in working out (Tomas Haake) what to play on the Meshuggah CDs, and how he
still hasn't gained any (Tomas Haake) mastery over the music that
Meshuggah writes (Tomas Haake). You get the sense that playing drums in
Meshuggah is usually a bit (Tomas Haake) of a struggle, and that he has a
ways to go before he would crown himself a polyrhythmic king.
I just thought that was (Tomas Haake) worth mentioning.

Well, this brings up a question that I haven't been able to find an answer
to for maybe 6 months now (maybe it's because I never asked it here
before, hehe): where do I find great examples of Mangini laying down some
rhythmic insanity? I've looked at some Extreme tracks (pretty sure they
were Mangini-era), I have a Vai mp3 (from Fire Garden, I believe), and
I've heard Mullmuzzler. On what I've heard, he's mostly a straight-rock
drummer, very much contradicting what I've read about him here and in
Modern Drummer and a few other places.
So, aside from instructional videos, can anybody point me to any recorded
CDs that show a more "uninhibited" side of Mangini (note: the more
insane, the better)?

I've always liked their lyrics. A lot of people say DTs lyrics are "cheesy."
they definitely are sometimes, but overall theyre good. sometimes the lyrics
are pseudo-intelligent, sometimes cheesy. cant decide if I&W or Awake has
better lyrics. I think Myung writes the best lyrics. AcoS is one of their
best songs lyrically. SFAM lyrics werent great, but they had to sacrifice
good lyrics for a concept album. lyrics on FII were weak. only JLMB and ToT
had good lyrics.

Goodness, I don't check my mail for two days, and people want to replace
MP with a drum machine or Mike Mangini? MIKE IS DT! PERIOD! Just like
James and Lars are Metallica, Dave is Megacrap (I can say that after the
last show) Geoff and Chris are...wait nevermind. Anyway, Keyboard changes
are ok, brings new life into the band. Personally, I love JR sound and
style, but Kevin wrote some wicked lyrics. If any other member, and I
stress ANY , I don't think they would continue, or if they did they would
lose a lot of fans, and lose their sound. Why let the man who provides
so much pleasure and enjoyment in our life, and who's music has really
become the backbone of our lives (well for me) read this crap. Lets end
this please.

I think I've been a little unclear in my posts about Mangini. I only mean
to say that, from a merely FUNCTIONAL time-keeper standpoint, Mike Mangini
is about the only person that could hack it. He has no place in DT, and
nobody else does either. This is Mike Portnoy's band, and his replacement
would OBVIOUSLY mean the end of DT. Reading back through a couple of my
posts, I see where you could have mistaken me for taking the opposite view.
Portnoy is a fabulous, musical drummer, and I don't mean to bag on him in
any way... :)
I also agree that if ANY other member besides the keyboard player was ever
replaced, DT would be done. Even the ever-quiet Myung (though obviously a
fabulous bassist) is crucial to the chemistry of DT. DT without JM? DT
without MP? Never. DT without JP? Never. DT without KJLB? Never
again... :)

Hey everyone -
To those of you who were lamenting the fact you missed the TSO X-Mas Special
on TV the other night, you will apparently have a chance to redeem yourself.
The official TSO website (www.trans-siberian.com) reports that the show will
be rerun on the Fox Family Channel sometime on Thursday, December 23. They
don't list the exact time, however. Tomorrow is when the weekly TV listings
come in our Sunday paper, but in case I forget to check the exact time, I
wanted to let you all know that it's going to be on again. And to those
requesting video dubs of the show, I'd like to help you but I only have one
working VCR. Sorry! :-)
