Dude... I've no idea what kind of shit have you been smoking, but it's obviously starting to affect your judgement :) Those are all fine drummers you mentioned, but Mike IS what makes DT such a kick ass band, he aces at every aspect of drumming.

I hope Mike isn't taking this crap serious...

I'd have to say a toss up between "Space Dye Vest" and "A Change Of Seasons". Petrucci is good, but I always preferred Mikey's lyrics for some reason, esp ACOS. I dunno why...

I certainly believe that MP is the biggest force behind our favourite band, together with JP. I believe we could have DT without JLB or JM or JR. But take away MP or JP and things will never be the same and never as DT-like as they are now. Colaiuta and Bozzio are excellent drummers and I also think that we should not exaggerate MP's capability. They are just playing other music and MP fits very wel for the music they are playing right now. And don't forget that MP is not just drumming in this band. He is very 'much involved in every aspect of this band' (sic, see the FAQ on his website). S IMHO he is a VERY BIG influence on everything DT does and does not. However, what is miss in MP's drumming is what I would call 'dynamics'. At the end of the first Liquid Drum Theater is a drum solo. Technically impressive, but the whole solo is at a same volume level... I prefer what Neil Peart is doing so well, o solo with a lot of dynamic. If you know what I mean...

    Hey all,

Everyone is talkin about lyrics and such here. I'd like to see Mike and the gang offer a lyrics contest for all fans. We can enter into the contest and if your song is picked you get to go into the studio with the band and watch them make and record the CD. All from a fan's idea. To do this there shouldn't be any limits to the amount of words in the lyric, only that it be of good content.

For all you musicians out there, maybe they should offer a contest for the best prog demo tape or MP3. Have a contest musically, the winner would get time in the studio to record the track with the help of DT. Wouldn't that be cool. :))

Recently I went to a CD show here in Atlanta and got 5 CD's there. 4 of which I think are great, as for the 5th one I am not liking the vocals. The CD's are: Tiles: Presents of Mind (great recording) This is one of the favs of the groups. The bass tracks on this are refreshing and great. The guitar could be a bit heavier, but over all I like the effect. The recording is awesome, another Terry Brown mix.

Gordian Knot: Gordian Knot (another great recording) A really nice prog CD that almost leans toward jazz. John Myung plays a couple tracks and shows he's a great bass player. Over all a great CD, recorded well too.

Labyrinth: Return to Heaven Denied An all around great CD.

Angel Dust: Bleed Another all around great CD.

Crimson Glory: Astronoaica The music on this CD is awesome. I'm not into the vocals. He either sings low or screams way to high and the mix of the two aren't very good. As a band the music is there, but vocally he doesn't need to scream throughout the CD. He could use it as a way to express pain or orrow instead of what he does here. Just my opinion.

4 out of the 5 I recommend. Enjoy, The Wizard

    Yo Jamanoids!

I don't care if there are better Drummers than Mike. I just think no one could replace him in DT. Think about it: If DT actually has a band leader, who is it? Mike! Definitely. I have the impression that he gets things where they are. I mean, he reads the jam (=listens to the fans), produced and concepted SFAM (together with JP of course), makes funny videos for us and whatever . Dream Theater without Mike Portnoy just wouldn't be Dream Theater.

I don't want to creep up Mike's ass (was that the right expression?) but he just seems to be a great guy and I don't think anyone should even think about replacing him.

Portnoy fits DT without any doubt.

    >Do you really consider him a drum player that puts >"feeling" and "sould" in his playing? (like Terry >Bozzio, or Dave Weckl)

Look, I play drums and I know about that stuff a lot. I've got 5 albums with Dave Weckl, but I don't like his playing much. It's technically brilliant but, most of the times, it lacks feeling (except Master Plan). Bozzio is an awesome player (I've got BLS, Explorer's Club and Zappa's albums) but he is a melodic player rather than rhythm player now. :-) Btw, he has an amazing drumset.

    >I believe that Dream Theater with someone else att >drums, maybe Vinnie >Colaiuta, Gregg Bisonnette, or Terry Bozzio, would be >MUCH better, and musical...

I can't imagine Vinnie Colaiuta or Bisonette whackin' his drumkit on Mirror or Beyond This Life, sorry. :-) Vinnie is such an amazing player but he plays kinda jazz/rock/pop and not prog. rock. I have to agree that Mangini would be the best replacement.

I thought the lyric is actually "Toungue tied and twisted just and earthbound misfit, I"\ You can twist any song to be a drug reference. While I cannot say what the Artist really meant, I always felt that this song was about transending the normal boundaries which confine us. Whether that transention is through drugs or some other means..who knows.

As an asside, Pink Floyd has been my favourite band for 15 years and I still feel that they are one of the most poetic and intelligent bands ever. And I never did any drugs!

PS: It was Pink Floyd which made me listen to other bands with Floydian elements to them, such as Marillion, Queensryche, and Dream Theater. I remember first hearing about that awesome song "Grendel" ten years ago on the Floyd mailing list.

Now if anyone wants to send me a copy o the TSO concert..I would love to see it. I wanted to go to the NYC show but didnt have anyone to go with :( erghg.

In fact, after listening to SFAM several, several times, I must say that I don't actually recall any particular keyboard solo, other than the player piano and synth horn parts. They're just meaningless barrages of notes. And the one solo in which I really really like the notes he's playing, he uses a painfully cheesy patch (yep, synth horn.....).

As for lyrics, I'd have to say that SDV is my fave. "And I'll smile and I'll learn to pretend" is such a simple statement, but is says SOOO much, IMO. WFS->LTL (does ANYBODY listen to these as separate songs?!?!) is a close second. The last line (By nature's.......) just KILLS me. JLMB is cool because they bash Kurt Cobain and EmptyV, but that song, to me, sounds really.........."thrown together", both musically and lyrically. I've never been a big fan of that one (and I'm NOT an FII basher!). I just thought of something: If FII was supposed to be so 'commercial', why would they bash Kurt Cobain & MTV? That's sure not how you sell records.................

    Diego my amigo:

Get off the crack-cocaine, my friend. Bozzio is a superb drummer with an incredibly insightful approach to the drums as an instrument. He's more into the solo drum exploration than the band vibe. Dave Weckl-he's a fucking machine; awesome. For some reason he can't get out of the Jazz Lite thing. Mike Portnoy-has the chops of both aforementioned masters of the kit, and shares a common vision with the other members of DT which is why he works so well with the others. He plays such an integral role in the DT camp that I simply cannot see the band viably existing without him, kinda like the whole PF-Roger Waters connection. The chemistry and common vision between members of a band is what allows a band to thrive and remain craeative; it is when the shared vision is lost that the chemistry is also lost and it's time for a change (D.S.'s "departure" from DT). Feeling and soul alone do not make a good band or musician. Besides, MP plays with more feeling than 98% of drummers in rock, so what exactly is your bitch with him in the first place?

Been there, done that. We've all heard DT without JLB and JR before, and IMO, this is the best arrangement of people in DT yet.

Although, if we wait long enough, JM may be ousted for Tony Levin....

well...no. I think that MP's playing is, like the cornerstone in all of DT's music...well, I guess that's just difference of oppinions for ya. BTW I don't know Vinnie or Gregg but Terry Bozzio is no match what-so-ever to MP IMO.

    no hard feelings.

    Dave,

hate to tell you that the UK is a prog-metal wilderness - but you'll find out soon enough :-) Barry Mannilow is on tour in January - better move quick! :-)

Date: Wed, 15 Dec 1999 18:39:09 PST ]From: "Dave Peterson" <glyde@hotmail.com> To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Info on finding out about European prog tours?

    >I'm planning on being in London for a month in January and would >LOVE to see as many prog-metal bands mentioned on the Jam as >I can while I'm in Europe. Is there any place on the internet (or >in a magazine) that would list that sort of information? Is there >something to effect of a "tours.com" for bands on tour?

I'll mail you privately with details of record stores, though if you are used to US prices, you're gonna hate paying US$20+ for CDs in the UK.

As for gigs - we have lots of them, unfortunately most of them are either Boy bands (kiddie music), Indie, Death metal, or Korn-like neo-metal. Prog is not really in demand and gigs are few and far between, though, in all seriousness 1999 hasn't been a bad year and in the prog and prog-metal fields I've seen Threshold, Landmarq, Spocks Beard, Arena, Saga (yuk), Pendragon, Grey Lady Down, Porcupine Tree and Anathema (stretching the definition a little there, maybe).

For Dream Theater, Angra, Strato, Vanden Plas, Pain (in the arse) of Salvation, Lemur Voice, Superior etc, I have to get a train or plane across the channel and visit Holland, Belgium or France, which is what I'd suggest you do also, 'cept January is a bit of a lean time for tours, with everyone staying at home to recover from the cost of Christmas.

Anyway, here's a few places to start looking

    UK: http://www.tickets-online.co.uk/ http://www.aloud.com/ - both with on-line ticket purchase facilities (I think) also http://www.beat.co.uk/gigs/

and try http://www.rocknetwork.com/ for general info - get a feel for what the UK 'scene' is all about.

Holland and Belgium: the Dutch Progressive Rock Page - NL gigs http://www.dprp.vuurwerk.nl/nlgigs/index.html

For on-line purchase of tickets - use the Dutch PPT website and follow the instructions for foreigners http://www.postkantoor.nl/

    Belgium: http://olwr.belgacom.be/fr/ - has on-line ticket ordering

France http://www.rockinfo.fr/ reasonably comprehensive, but light on facilities for buying tickets. http://www.fnac.com/ record store chain with on-line ticket sales - again not for all concerts.

Germany http://www.euro-ticket.de:8080/ Handy for those Bush, Cher and Sting tickets, but never seems to list any real rock gigs http://www.vorverkauf.com/ Another fairly useless German site. http://www.ticketworld.de/ and another one

Italy http://www.rockanddogs.com/ The only site I've found - they don't seem to have many gigs in Italy.

    Sweden: http://www.torget.se/biljett_direkt/

    Prog gigs in Spain http://usuarios.iponet.es/cfalp/CONC/concprog.htm

Europe-wide http://www.live-music.com/ this site is good for some countries, but lacks info and ticket-buying sites for many countries.

Good venues with lots of prog and metal acts http://users.skynet.be/sky80229/66/ - Route 66, Verviers, Belgium http://www.planetmusicbiebob.com/ - Biebob, Vosselaar, Belgium

    >Any help would be appreciated. I hope to hang out in Germany >one weekend too, to check out their music scene.

    Sounds a safer bet :-)

Vanden Plas start touring at the end of January. I will be seeing some of the dates on the tour - I just haven't worked out which ones yet. Also Crimson Glory are supposed to be touring in January/Feb but I heard rumours that this was dependant upon sales of their new album - which certainly haven't been as good as expected. Neither band will be bothering to visit the UK (unless I suddenly find the money to promote vanden Plas myself), so a cross-channel trip would be necessary to catch either of these. Yes start touring in early Feb.

Anyway - check out those websites and mail me if you have any questions

    Charlie
