there's a HUGE differance between bootlegged DT shows and Mike's new video.
bootlegs you just can't get any other way. you're not stealing from the
band. mike's video is readily available. pirating his video is just
bullshit. you're screwing the band you're trying to support. if you don't

Many of Kev's solo sounds are based on basic square or sawtooth waves.
Unfortunately, the coolness of them is in the programming beyond the wave
choice. If I knew how to recreate it, I'd be happy to share.

SDV is actually a real piano. If you listen to the very end as it fades
out, you can hear the damper pedal release.

I won't rate the albums (cause it is way too close to a "top X list") but
Awake is definitely my least fav of the James-era studio albums. I listen
to it maybe once every 3 or 4 months or so. I also think the keys are
completely buried in the mix and really uninspired. So add me to that bin
of jammers.

I think JP overuses Wah much more than Derek ever did. Derek rarely if
ever did the stereotypically annoying rhythmic "wah wah" on beats one and
two thing. He tended to use it as a way to shape the sound as he played it
over time. Meanwhile, over on "Home" ........

I'm planning on being in London for a month in January and would LOVE to see
as many prog-metal bands mentioned on the Jam as I can while I'm in Europe.
Is there any place on the internet (or in a magazine) that would list that
sort of information? Is there something to effect of a "tours.com" for
bands on tour?
Any help would be appreciated. I hope to hang out in Germany one weekend
too, to check out their music scene. Thanks guys!

Ooh, I fall into that category, hehe... slight understatement.
I would definitely go for Imaginations from the Other Side after Nightfall,
as another jammer has so aptly already pointed out. It's a nifty
progression, going backwards.. that's what I'm in the process of right now
(stalled process, as I'm broke). I love both - but I think I scared the
crap out of my roommate when I first played Imaginations while she was
still here.. hehe... some absolutely awesome thrash-y stuff on there.

The Mirror/Lie is the reason I absolutely love Awake - also, Scarrrrrrred,

right now I would totally have to hear that song again, but I'm too lazy to
move the CDs around, even would I want to bump SFaM. As for the comment
that FII bashers are the Awake fanatics: I certainly fall into the latter
category, although SFaM is giving it a definite run for its money, but not
the former. :) Sorry, just felt like being an exception, not the rule.
Lastly, something I just have to say, and only you guys will understand
what the hell I am talking about: Anyone else dig that bass part that
starts at about 2:38 of Strange Deja Vu??? Holy SHIT I love that groove!!
I can't get enough of it!!
Alright, that's it out of this popsicle stand. I'm off to find another

To preface this, I'm not flaming you. But your information seems to be a bit off - the differences between bootlegs and pirating a video like this are numerous: First of all, a bootleg is a live recording of a concert. Nobody on this list would even CONSIDER copying an officially-released DT album for somebody else and selling it. However, at least two of the members of DT have officially stated that they are pro-bootleg (I know JP is hard against them, but I don't know about JLB and JR). So, by their standards, it's okay to make copies of live material, mainly for the fact that some of the stuff they do live they've never released on any official album.
But this video is an official, copyrighted work that is licensed to a home viewer. That means that you can't copy it. Unlike bootlegs, which aren't licensed and have no royalties or copyrights assigned to them (besides the copyrights on the songs themselves), this video is NOT the same as a bootleg.
Just wanted to set you straight on the procedure of the law. Yes, bootlegs are technically illegal, I suppose. But according to at least two of the members of the band, you have their permission as the copyright holders to distribute the live material, as long as you are not gaining a profit by doing so. This means that according to the law, you have a waiver from the copyright holders that allows you to copy and distribute their material. That's the difference between the two.

I know that Jordan Rudess may be the greatest piano player to walk this earth...well at least one of the greatest, but I feel Kevin Moore is a much better song writer. I think Jordan sometimes makes the music too complicated and uses sounds on his keyboard that just don't seem to fit. For example, the ending of Beyond This Life. But Kevin kind of wrote with the thinking that Tony Levin has in his song writing. He doesn't want to play a zillion notes in one measure, but intsead look for that one note, that one note that just fits and sends shivers down your spine. Tony said this in the Bass Day 97 video. Anyway, I think Kevin Moore was the best fit for the band. And if they got back together I think the next album would top all that they have done before. And this is my list for best DT albums...

I think Awake is an amazing album lyrically.. far better than any of the others. As far as individual songs, my vote goes for "Lines in the Sand". One of the things that has always fascinated me about this list, is how differently everyone seems to define good lyrics. What one considers to be brilliant, another considers to be cheese. I've often wondered what the general consensus is as well. On I&W I find the lyrics a bit forced and too "wordy" for their own good, at times. WDADU is an even more extreme exampleOn FII I feel it went the other way and they became too simple. SFAM I think the lyrics are tarnished by the fact that they have to conform to the concept, which is fine with me.. I'm willing to sacrifice for a good concept album ;) The lyrics on Awake are by far, imo, the most relaxed, and insightful that DT have written.

Oh man, exactly the same reason as mine, why I really love Awake!! IMHO the keys in Awake are KevMo's most brilliant moments. Another similar example for me is his work in ACOS '93. Subtle but really brings this nice, weird tension, something that never happens with Derek, and only occasionally with Jordan. This doesn't mean I don't like the others' works, though.

Yeah, I think I mostly feel the same way. If, prior to SFAM, I only listen to stuffs from Helloween, Blind Guardian, Yngwie, or any other neo-symphonic-classical-whatever-METAL stuffs, surely SFAM would be the best EVER amongst these. Unfortunately, I've been listening to DT before that, so, yeah, I too wasn't knocked out of my sandals. ;-) As I have said before, SFAM could not be their best effort songwriting-wise.
By the way, I don't wear socks. The climate here is too damn humid, you wouldn't stand wearing shoes and socks just for an hour in the open. So I wear sandals. ;-) -- pluki 8498006

I have to agree with you on Awake. I love the effort they put forward into writing these lyrics... (BTW i am a Christian)... i really like the lyrics on "Just Let Me Breathe".... Yeah, I hate that poor Dominici's voice. Especially when he sings 'killing haeaeaend...' Aargh, driving me nuts every time I hear it. :-) Music is really cool and WDADU would be _much_ better with James on vocals. Anyway, I somehow don't get it how the hell they could take such singer like Dominici.

I really will miss LTE. Myung is an awesome bass player, but Tony is Tony. I liked their music much, because it was heavily 'more technically/not so comercially' oriented.

Maybe it is a metaphor for that. I'm not into that so I couldn't tell ya. either way, I still dont think the lyrcs are that great (especiallly compared to old Pink Floyd)and I'd like to think that Pink Floyd is more than just a band to get high on while listening to. Not that I'm knocking that practice but that's just how I feel. But I do think that Learning to Fly does have some great guitar in it, but I want more out of Flyd than just that one componet. -Mike C.
