Do you guys celebrate Christmas where you are from because maybe some of us just don't have the money right now. I thought this was a forum to ask questions. If piracy is the subject, then what do you call have of the bootleg's that are being sold on this list and other auction sites. This was the first time I posted on the site and if I am going to start getting flamed by some guy from Scotland, then it'll be the last. I expected a little more from fellow ytsejammers, doesn't everybody else agree? Don't bother, this is my last post.

Is it THAT hard to understand that if you DON'T have the money, you gotta wait till you DO instead of pirating the video?
> I thought this was a forum to ask questions. If piracy is the subject, then > what do you call have of the bootleg's that are being sold on this list and > other auction sites.
The bootlegs are NOT official releases. If you purchase a bootleg, you're not really hurting any sales. If you purchase a pirated copy of this video, you ARE hurting the sales of the official release. The DT guys earn their money this way, so why do you think you wouldn't have to pay for it?

I also hope he "royally flames you" for this. It's ridiculous to pretend you wouldn't know that this is illegal. I wonder how Mike feels when he reads this stuff. Someone asking for a pirated copy of an official release on a "public" mailing list ...
I highly doubt any "fellow ytsejammers" will agree with you.

Not only: Someone was saying that he didn't like KevMo's I&W lead sound; but I love it! It's kinda like Rick Wright's "Shine On..." intro lead sound, but with more bite and attack. Is that a Moog or something? I mean, whatever it is, how do I get it out of a Korg X5 or a Roland JP8000?
Furthermore, since we're talking about Awake, is there some real piano on there? SDV sounds synthy to me; but if you look closely to the left of where KevMo's sitting in the inside photo of them in the studio, there's what looks like one end of a baby grand piano lurking in the shadow. Any thoughts?

I find it to be rather ironic that a prog fan is calling ANYTHING pretentious, given that ALL prog is regarded as pretentious by non-fans. And what's the first thing we always say to those people? "You only call it pretentious 'cos you don't understand it". I mean, come off it...I know what you're getting at, but this wasn't smart.
>:) ), but it misses something (difficult to explain, some kind of >completeness, I would call it) that WAS present on I & W and SFAM, I don't find SFaM to have that completeness; certainly, if it does, then it's less pronounced than on Awake. Which, to my mind, is also a concept album, although more a DSotM theme than a Wall story.

SFAM breaks ground because it is the culmination of all three of those elements that you previously mentioned into one work. It takes everything good off the previous albums, combines it, and, imo, takes it to another level.

I don't know if you were here during the infamous "veil of secrecy" period but here's some points. First off, the band doesn't fully support bootlegs, but Mike does. He's the only one who reads the list. Bootlegs are also a completely different area legally from what you're talking about. I'd be a liar if I said I hadn't pirated a video before, but the issue remains that if you are going to dicuss making copies of a video that Mike has officially published and put out on the market, please at least have the respect to not do it so blatantly, and in an open fashion, right before Mike's very eyes. While the veil was up, some dude posted offering to sell copies of SFAM to people, and Mike got very pissed. Just keep this in mind.

So as long as we're on the topic: 1. I&W (Learning to Live, Surrounded) 2. OiaLT (the rendition of Freebird is RAD) 3. ACoS (first DT album I got, kinda sentimental) 4. Live at the Marquee (Another Hand... ) 5. WDADU (sens Charlie... love John's guitar work. It's not as technical, but it's rad) 6. FII (a pleasant album, and Hell's Kitchen...) 7. Awake (best thing about this album is playing Lie VERY loud and watching Metallica fans weep... plus 6:00 and Erotomania... but I think Voices sounds annoying) 8. SFaM (it's growing on me, but it's got a long way to go. Most of the instrumental sections are rad. Sorry, not a concept album fan, nor mystery fan)
And as long as we're tearing Awake apart... it reminds me too much of Metallica. James is screaming, not singing. And it's too heavy with too few truly good guitar solos (Lie and imo Scarred being exceptions).
Peace, and merry Christmas / happy Chanukkah (I hope I spelled that right) / happy new year / happy Kwanza / and all the other holidays that we don't hear about here in America b/c we're too arrogant to notice other cultures.

2. Does anyone else miss LTE? True, Mike & Jordan & John are now in a band together, but the music is totally different, I don't see Jordan's joining DT as a reason to end LTE.

The January 2000 issue of Metal Edge has a VERY positive review of OFB's coveted "Scenes From A Memory" It's well worth reading!
For those of you interested in reading the review, I've placed a .zip file on my web page. I scanned the magazine page, saved it in .jpg format, then zipped the image so certain mail clients wouldn't have downloading problems. The image size is 775 x 1060 and is very legible when viewed with the appropriate software. http://www.isd.net/astrosch/sfam.zip I understand some Jammers may have trouble acquiring the magazine so I've made the article accessible to all.
If your mail client can't download directly from the above link, try going here: http://www.isd.net/astrosch/music.html page down to the bottom and look for the link. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For those of you interested, (And you all should be) I have placed some MP3s on my web site. The band is BoneSoda, a three man band comprised of homegrown Minnesota boys! One of them is a silent Jammer... I'm sure many of you will find this stuff quite interesting. The recording was done in two takes at a college recording studio. It's not bad considering the budget and extreme pressure the musicians were under to get it laid down quickly. I think you'll find the results pleasing. I would really like to hear some feedback from people... as would the mystery musician. :o)

FEEDBACK FEEDBACK FEEDBACK!
There will be a quiz on this later... :o) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I wasn't kidding about the quiz. I'd like to see the creative minds of the jam conjure up some wild answers to these questions: Who is Misha? What was Misha's *Surprise*?

I have to agree completely. Awake is my favorite DT release. After I started paying attention to the key parts on Awake, I realized that all of my favorite "melodies" in the songs were KevMo playing some kind of stringy synth part. His piece is always in addition to the rest of the instruments. If he had just followed another part (like the guitar), or just added a little piano accent, the songs would be like cake without the icing. His parts always add a whole new dimension.
As far as keyboard "sounds" used, I liked all of the ones that KM used. Lead or background.

You must mean definition 2.
"Making or marked by an extravagant outward show"
I guess I'm just baffled by a song being called pretentious. It's a song. It's *supposed* to be showy. But I'm that guy who likes every DT song and Voices is one of my favorites. Like top three DT songs kind of favorite.

I love Awake. I love most songs on it. There does seem to be one song on each DT album that I can skip and sometimes do but I still like the song. But Voices. Man. I love Voices. I love Erotomania before it too.

Hi. Someone asked how last night's TSO special did with ratings and viewership. I work with Nielsen ratings. Don't have any national numbers, but the special did very well in the New York DMA (Designated Market Area). The first quarter hour was the best, and then it continued to drop (in viewership). Of course this doesn't have that much to do with the show itself since there was a pending MTA (transit) strike and everyone had to know if there would be ways of getting to work today, thereby switching to news networks. But for a cable network, the numbers were good and the advertisers will be pleased. This time of year there is also a lot of competetion; and ratings are a bit arbitrary anyway due to sample size and such. For some Dream Theater content: even though videos are costly ($, and time) I hope someday to see more DT videos. I especially love the one for Another Day. I guess I should get back to work. Take care. -Rachel

Some of my Dream Theater misheard lyrics:
"In spite of the evil dance" (One Last Time, SFAM) - In spite of the evidence.
"You can tell your stepfather I'm sexual" (Lie, Awake) - You can tell your stepfather I said so.
Damn. I can't remember any more right now, but I have many others!

>And Learning to Fly, which DOES have some terrific guitar work form Gilmour in it, has really bad lyrics: >"tongue tied and twisted, just an earth bound blisted flight" What's up with THAT crap???
I could be wrong but i thought this song was using airplane piloting (or skydiving) as a metaphor to getting hi for the first time. The lyrics make sense to me..
"Learning to fly" .. when your hi you often feel like your floating and you're hi :) The whole first passage is describing the first hour or so when your hi is building. he's alone, which is how you feel when you are hi.. the "fatal attraction" is his immediate love for the feeling.. "how can i escape this irresistable grasp".. you often feel helpless when you're hi..
"I can't keep my eyes from the circling sky".. starring off into the sky.. once you are really into the hi you can't keep from staring at the weirdest things.. "Tongue-tied and twisted, just an earth-bound mistfit, I." I get so fucked up somethimes that i can't even talk, some cotton-mouth and your throat burns like hell, and he's trying to reach the sky.. but he's an earth-bound (he hasn't hit his climax yet) misfit (bad boy), I (maybe a refference to the psychological "I": self and ego)
"ice forming on the tips of my wings.." (arms losing thier feelings or going numb) .. "no navigator to guide my way home.." he's alone and fucked up, and has no one to help him down from his hi (can be bad when using acid and heroin) .. "unladened empty and turned to stone.." his mind is completely care free and empty, and he can't feel the rest of his body.
"A soul in tension thats learning to fly.." he's learning to let go of fear and anguish by getting hi. "condition grounded but determinded to fly.." he knows that he cant really fly ..but damnit he's gonna try (metaphorically of course)
"Across the clouds i see my shadow fly.". he's hit his climax and his mind thinks he's flying. he sees the ground and his shadow "A dream unthreatened by the morning light, could blow this sould right through the roof of the night".. his sould (passions, loves, inhibitions) is trying to break free from the wall he has created around them.
"There's no sensation to compare with this..." that is self-explanatory.. cause there isn't! "Suspended animation, a state of bliss..." also self-explanatory.. if you've ever been hi... you yearn for this!
This is what i get out of the song.. But i was also totally fucked up when i heard this for the first time and that might be were i'm getting this from.. This, besides Comfortably Numb (DUH!), is my favorite song to listend to when i'm hi..
feel free to totally flame the hell out of me.. but i haven't found any floyd sites that contradict this.. so..
