Glad I am not the only one with this opninion about Voices. I find it to be far-fetched and Michael Pruchnicki called it 'pretentious'... Could not find a better word. I like most other songs on Awake (the first time I listened to it, it was at 11:00 in the evening, through headphones, and I forgot to switch off the main speakers, causing the rest of the family to wake up... :) ), but it misses something (difficult to explain, some kind of completeness, I would call it) that WAS present on I & W and SFAM, on FII too, but to a lesser extent.

Regarding the Chistmas TV Special, I also saw it and absolutely loved it. I thought Jewel did a very nice job with "Hark the Herald Angels", but Michael Crawford's version of "O Holy Night" knocked me on my ass. What a voice THAT dude has! I wish I had seen him as the "Phantom"... he prolly kicked all kinds of ass in that role. :-)
I was also extremely pleased at the inclusion of "Christmas Canon" (my fave track off the 2nd TSO album) and my absolute fave non-traditional TSO tune, "This Christmas Day". AWESOME!!

I forgot to ask in my previous TSO-related post. Did any of you who saw the TSO X-Mas Special last night notice either Jon Oliva or Paul O'Neill on stage? I don't think they were there, which really surprised me since I thought they were the primary song writers/arrangers, not to mention performers in TSO.
Anyway, I was just kinda surprised I didn't see them, although I could have just overlooked them. Although, Mr. Oliva is kinda hard to overlook. I was really looking forward to seeing the Mountain King trying to look comfortable and happy in a tux. ;-)

Was i the only one to think that it was cheesy as hell?! (Michael crawford not the tv show) He seemed like a lounge singer from vegas. Who was that other dude with the furry mullet type hair? The best things in there were all the TSo performances, jewel, and the female singers who were hot! :) Oh and the black ugly guy whos voice also rocks! I wanted Zakk Stevens to come out and sing some...but i dont think hes in TSO right? too bad... Where was john oliva? isnt he in Tso too? ( i think i remember him playing on Rosie o donnel)

Oh, it's not that I don't like dark, brooding music. I just don't like DT doing it. Coming off of I&W, I think they should have gone down the more technical avenue as opposed to the dark avenue. Personal opinion, of course.... :)

Well... to a degree, I agree with you, but DT isn't that kind of band, and that's not what its fans have come to expect from them. As a general rule, though, I tend to think along the same lines as you.

I'll stand by you on this one, too - you just can't touch Derek's lead sound. With, like, a 10' pole.

Sure it is, but it's got a whole thematic thread that almost mandates its darkness at times. And there are some lifting moments as well. I felt Awake was this whole batch of darkness that just didn't seem to fit with what I had come to expect from the band.
Now, I'm not saying that the band has to create every album catered and tailored to my tastes. I was just disappointed, is all. :)

Yeah, I only saw Chris, Al, Johnny, and Jeff, plus Robert Kinkel. I was kinda looking forward to seeing Jon, too. I only saw the last 20 minutes, tho. But I taped it, so I'll watch the rest later! What I saw, tho, kicked much ass!
Another question: If Savatage was dumped from Atlantic and picked up by Nuclear Blast, what about TSO? I know they've made loads of money for Atlantic. Did they move to Nuclear Blast as well? Seems like an odd situation.

I never found the KevMo to be buried in Awake, in fact, he's the whole reason I dig that album as much as I do. Just because he doesn't play many leads, doesn't mean he's buried. Instead of showing off, he supplys droning string-like sounds, that give the Album a really cool, dark feel. He was really the glue that held Awake together, because JM, the usual glue, IS pretty much buried on a lot of that CD. (Durn 7-string guitar!) I make no fuss about DT keyboardists, because I like all of their work, but, IMHO, Awake just wouldn't have been anywhere near as good with DS or JR on keys.....

Here is my list of favorites from DT.
1. Scenes From A Memory (I love concept albums) 2. Images and Words (First CD I owned by DT) 3. Falling into Infinity (Experimenting with different sounds) 4. Once in a LiveTime (LIVE: Need I say more?) 5. Awake (Good songs and love the CD, personally I like longer songs) 6. A Change of Seasons (Finally done in the studio) 7. When Dream And Day Unite (mucially this rocks- the vocals kill this).
With that, I'd like to see the current DT lineup go back into the studio and re-record When Dream and Day Unite. Different vocals would be great for that. Also consider how different it would sound now. What would they change? Would Jordan add his own style given the opportunity to take the songs and expand on each of them. Would James add something vocally or a lyric here or there that would change the meaning of the song to some? What would Mike do different in his drumming?
Would be nice to see what would happen. It would also be cool to have them do it for all DT fan club members. A rare CD no one else has of the remake of When Dream and Day Unite with Jordan and James.
Sounds like a great idea, but if everyone did that the music made during the time wouldn't be as important. Music is what matters and if only for a brief time does music stand still and for that moment we must capture what music is and let the listeners decide what they like or dislike. I dunno, but I think it's safe to say they're still with Atlantic. Judging from the giant Altantic Records logo that popped up on the screen at the end of the show, anyway.
And as far as Michael Crawford goes, I got the lounge singer feel from him, too. Probably because of the way he was caressing the microphone and molesting the choir children while gliding around the stage like Wayne Newton. He had a good voice, though. Although when he first walked out on stage I thought he was going to shout, "Let's get ready to ruuuuuuuummmmmmbllllllllllle!!!!!" Looked just like Michael Buffer to me.

Man, you can copy everything! My friend has an really old videorecorder (he has newer one as well) and that recorder ignores every protection. Pretty cool, ain't it? :-)

I agreed with most of your post until this point, David. For my taste, Kevin wrote fantastic solos (LtL, TTT) and complimented JP extremely well. JP has ALWAYS been able to write solos that sound absolutely perfect to my ear. This is to say that if I had the ability to do what he does, I would write the same thing. Kevin's solos felt that way to me also, while Derek's solos never did.
The jury is still out on Jordan - I would like to hear another CD before I make a decision. He is twice the technician either Derek or Kevin will ever be, but that doesn't do it all in my book, and I would still like to see Jordan pay more attention to melodies and cohesiveness. It sounds on SFaM that he is still stuck in the LTE mentality of playing a billion trillion notes - Which is cool, but not what I listen to DT for.
This is probably why I still rate I&W on the top of my list. That CD contains so much intelligent and thoughtful songwriting that I can't comprehend of another album that would possibly take its place. Any album with LTL, TTT, and Met1. on it will always have my vote.

See, the thing is, I am still finding interesting stuff in I&W, after what, 5 or 6 years of listening to it? I can safely say I have analyzed every instrument in the band, and its relationship to the others, throughout the entire CD. But there is always the occasional day, even now, where I will listen a little closer and think "Whoah, I didn't know that xxx did yyy right here, and that it relates to zzz in this way. That's awesome." If SFAM is still doing that in 2004, I'll be one happy dude. Somehow though, I don't know. LTL has a deeper storyline and more meaning to me than the entire of SFAM does.
Not to say SFAM doesn't kick ass though - I go bonkers at the end of Finally Free, and I think James is at his height on this disc - For a kicker, for those of you that have it, go back and listen to the classic bootleg "The Dance of Eternity" and check out James' voice. It's hilarious. :)
What disappoints me about SFAM, since you asked, is that save for the very end of FF, there are few moments like the crescendo in LTL, the solo in LiTS, the solo in Scarred, etc. Perhaps the opening of Through Her Eyes is really beautiful, but nothing that hasn't been done before in prog. Perhaps I was hoping that DT would redefine what a concept album should be, what prog should be, on this disc, and they didn't. So while I'm by no means disappointed by their showing, it doesn't carry the same weight as I&W does for me.
In each of DT's recordings, they have pushed the envelope in some way. I&W established the genre, Awake explored different moods and more complicated solo passages and group writing, FII looked at the commercial aspect of what prog can do. SFAM - well, I guess it explores a concept album, but only for DT - tons of bands have done it before. It's a good one, but not unprecedented. Perhaps I was so used to DT writing shit that I'd NEVER heard before, possibilities that I didn't think existed, and now I'm kinda disappointed because I wasn't knocked out of my socks. The disc rocks, absolutely, but it is a "reserved" awesomeness. Maybe I'm older. More jaded. Who knows. But I still want another I&W. :)
Until then though, I'm going to enjoy all DT has to offer, including SFAM, because there are moments in that disc that raise the hair on the back of my neck, like most of their music has done for me over the years. I've been enjoying this thread, of comparing albums. I've been around since jam #700 or so, so I've seen this thread come and go, but for some reason it's interesting this time.

HAHAHAHA. That's hilarious. I've known a ton of people from Interlochen and you don't have to have a ton of talent to get in there - Just an affinity for drugs and sex. So many fucked up things happen at that school, if I was a parent I wouldn't let my kid go anywhere near there. The only thing it is good for is so that later in life you can say "Yeah, I went to Interlochen. I knew Joe Blow. He was ok on the trumpet, but he was ALWAYS gettin caught smoking pot in the bathrooms." And IMO, Interlochen's name is NOT worth the money it takes to go there.
For the record, I thought Trevor's work prank thing was somewhat inappropriate.
