I just don't get why everyone thinks Awake is the be-all, end-all of DT's
albums. It's not that it's a good album, but it just doesn't do it for me.
Maybe it's the fact that the keyboards are SO buried in the mix, or maybe
it's the fact that it's so dark, or maybe I was dropped on my head too many
times as a child. But it just never really had the gut-wrenching kick that
DTs other albums have had for me. And yes, I'm aware that Voices is on
there, and yes, the song does nothing for me.

    For the record:

    1. Falling into Infinity
    2. Once in a LiveTime
    3. Tie: Images and Words / Scenes From A Memory
    4. A Change of Seasons (this'd be up higher if it were a total studio album)
    5. Awake
    6. When Dream And Day Unite (I agree with David - the vocals kill this).

I guess the reasons I like it are the reasons you DISlike it. I love dark,
brooding music (Type O, anyone?), and it suits my personality... :)

About the keys being buried - I think this also suits my taste. Keys, to me
(though I DO PLAY KEYS IN MY BAND), should be a complementing/accompanying
instrument, not a lead instrument. Don't get me wrong - Rudess and
Sherinian are both kick-ass lead players, and their styles are perfect for
playing leads in a band. IMHO, Moore just didn't solo as well as either of
the other two, and his lead sound was weak (Sherinian's kicks ass, and while
Jordan's isn't quite as good, it is still beefier and ballsier than
KevMo's). I think it is nice to not have the keys right in your face all
the time... :) <Dave dons the good ol' asbestos suit>

    It's not that I don't like keys (like I said, I am a keyboardist) - SFaM is
my favorite DT album, and it has keys all over the place. But, SFaM is also
VERY dark at times (also at times when keys are very prominent)...

And yes, I think Voices is a GOOD song, but is not the reason I like Awake.
I LOVE Scarred, Lifting Shadows Off a Dream, Innocence Faded, Space Dye
Vest, and Erotomania FAR more than Voices. And you gotta love The Mirror!
    :)

    My two cents...

I couldn't tell you much about Canon scanners.. But I'm not very fond of
their printers. I haven't paid much attention to scanners lately. :(
I would look into Hewlett Packard or Epson. Again... Avoid the bottom
feeder models. If it feels flimsy, it probably is. The better scanners
generally weigh much more than the garden variety cheapos and have
far better cabinet integrity... Not to mention image quality or reliability.

I couldn't agree more. Awake comes with a huge guitar sound, but lacks the aggressivity to use it well. (Beyond This Life's intro shows how to do it!) I think the songs on Awake are a bit too bland for my taste. There is very little seriously technical stuff (6:00 and the instrumental break of Scarred being the main exceptions) that IAW had tons of, there is little really catchy melodic stuff like Another Day and Surrounded. The epic songs are totally pretentious, but they lack the special something that makes Learning To Live seem more like an 8 minute track when listening to it. The long songs actually SEEM long which is not good. Voices is terribly pretentious and just doesn't do anything for me (except for the vocals - the chorus in particular is annoying!). The only songs that I can really listen to without skipping parts or getting bored are Erotomania, Lifting Shadows Off A Dream and Space-Dye Vest. I'd take FII over Awake any day - it has by far the better songwriting!

Btw, did anyone notice that the hardcore FII bashers are mostly Awake fanatics, too? :)

    > For the record: (not including live stuff) 1. SfaM 2. IAW (actually this is more of a tie with SfaM, but I'm a bit tired of IAW at the moment ;) 3. FII 4. ACOS (would've been #3 with a decent drum sound, I suppose) 5. Awake 6. WDADU

    Hello fellow proggies

It's maybe a little of the subject, but he, that's what the 'Jam is for, isn't it? ;P

I happened to stumble upon a CD-rom ( a CD-R copy ) wich contains ALL(!) of the Beatles albums in a compressed wave-format. It has a nice interface with all of the covers of the albums. When you double-click an album-cover you can play all of the songs of that album and also read the lyrics of the songs.

I checked out the .wav-files on the CD. They are compressed with Microsoft ADPCM, have a sample-rate of 22kHz at 4 bits. Can anyone tell me how it is possible to get an absolutely noiseless recording at this bitrate? It really amazes me...

If anyoneone else has this CD and/or knows how/where/why in the hell it was made, please enlighten me.

For me, I like Awake, SFAM, IAW, then FII. But it doesn't really matter. It's all DDT and it's all great to me. IAW is not my favorite becuase of the couple of ballads. Another Day is amost an 80's power ballad (not knocking it though- I still kinda dig it) and Surrounded sounds too happy to me, too much like a bad Genesis song. I never unserstood why a lot of people liked that song, but hey to each his own, and it's still DT so it's still cool to me. And I think the only reason I like Awake over SFAM is Keven's keyboard playing and the fact that FAM is a concept album. I love concept album but they can annoy me a little bit at times. Its a little harder to listen to songs by themselves with concept albums because they are all linked together. Just my opinion. -Mike

I was thinkin just now I was playin it for about the gazillionth time, that.. SFAM may just be my fav as well. I can actually get into all of the album now, and it still hasn't gotten old... oh and I'm STILL discovering new stuff.. after a couple of months. that's pretty impressive.

Wake up! It was satire, not meant to be taken seriously at all. Total sarcasm. Haven't you ever gotten one of those "Top Ten fun things to do in a computer lab" things or whatever? They used to be funny, now they've gotten really lame, and our mailboxes get flooded with them everyday. Just consider this a parody of one of those lists and plant tongue firmly in cheek when you read. The layers of humor here are multiple. You're laughing at the thought of someone laughing at this, or in a simpler way.. most of those old lists you're laughing with the idea, this one you're laughing at it. Hard to explain, but I understood it. I thought it was very funny.

Anyway, I downloaded Al's buddy's Mr. Silent Jammer's (John Myung?) MP3 Misha's Surprise through some small miracle here at work (56k by proxy is SLOW!) and I must say I find it quite good. Listening to the song makes me think of Joe Satch wanting to write another happy song with Rubina in the title and grabbing the guys from Enchant to play it for him. Everyone download it, if not for sheer enjoyment of the song, just to make Al's ISP upset at his sudden overwhelming consumption of bandwidth. :)

BTW, I hope everyone caught the special. :) That was pretty badass. I have to admit, I have no complaints about Jewel even being there. I've never been fond of her, but they must have slapped her around a bit so she would sing without all of that horrible inflection she puts on alot of her stuff.

Is there any way to check the ratings to see how many people watched? I'm curious. :) Too bad alot of it was Lipps, Inc. (not lip synched, damn... er... wait...). That was a disappointment to me. :\ -- KorgX3 is coming home this Christmas Day. huh... huh... I said "come"

That is totally true! I want to hook up my vcr to at least make an mp3 of this version of home! The louder piano parts are awesome..i prefer this version over the one in the album! I didnt notice the differences in the LTE tracks though.. The video IS very interesting for non-drummers...but i think its a bit too pricey to get if not for the in strumental value of it..

I think a lot of people give this girl a bum rap about the type of music she chooses to sing. Jewel Kilcher is an amazingly talented singer, songwriter, poet (well, this last might be contradicted by all the bad reviews of her book), and actress. She went to Interlochen Arts Academy, for crying out loud - you can't get in there (it's an arts HIGH school) without having a SIGNIFICANT amount of talent. She's been trained to sing operatically, so I find the comment that you make about her voice kind of offensive.

It'd be like if I tried to make a pop album, and then went on to my career choice of opera (I actually may do opera someday). As unlikely a scenario as it may seem, I have just as much a diversity in my musical tastes and styles of singing as Jewel does. I wouldn't be able to stand it if people were to say, "Wow, I couldn't believe he sang the part of Figaro without that awful inflection he had in his pop album..." It a different style, and therefore it warrants a different type of singing; what's perfectly all right for one is unthinkable to the other. So think twice the next time you hear her sing something that's not her typical girly-music and you hear something other than what you thought you'd hear.

I thought the show was excellent. Was that basically the whoel Christmas Eve and other stories album? Eve/Saravejo's video was cool. I see how they tied it a little with the DWD CD. I would do Jewel to, except get her braces. How old do you think the little blonde was? Give her a few years too (hehe) Seriously, I thought it was the best hour of music on TV in a long time.

Derek's piano solo in XMas CD 1998 'The Silient Man' rules. Derek could truly rock a keyboard and DT has lost this element that Derek so brilliantly filled. I hope the song oriented style of XMas 98 CD will be repeated some time down the line.

So what do you think the chances are of a little RMP being played during the show since both guys will be there? That would be cool.

Try listening to the Hoedown cover on the ELP tribute to hear Jordan play some rocky piano.

Now that John West is singing for Royal Hunt, does Artension have a new singer? Or did they break up? Anyone? Bueller?

Since I am a non-drummer and currently cannot afford to purchase the video's myself, would anybody be willing to tape them for me if I supply the tapes and a nominal fee? Just curious. Email privately.
