Well......im gonna go get the new deluxe live box set for X-Mas.

I sugest either Rift, Hoist, or Billy Breathes (Fantastic album) for a first
    time listen.

I have to admit, i used to hate phish, but i think i tried hard to hate them
because of the drug thing.. Druggies i know tell me its the best music to
get high to---DT is pretty good at that, but anyways........i began to love
phish because it was different. Different than most progressive rock and
actually a little more progressive (Not yet another DT wannabe band).
Phish really doesnt fit into a category and i really think that a lot of you
on the jam would enjoy listening to them if you found what is right for
you.....some albums are perfect for some, then there are some that are better
for others. If you dont like them right away, i dont blame you. Just give
them a chance---thats what i find a lot of you telling your non-DT fans as
well.....give em a chance. Oh well......just had to drop a few words.

    -compadre-

p.s. when are the US DT tour dates going to be available???

    >Look at Jethro Tull. I simple ADORE this band. BUT, I can't pretend and
    >I must say their few last albums totally suck, not because they're not
    >good, but because they just don't do nothing, the fire is gone, the
    >spirit is gone.

I'm going to have to disagree with you there. The new albums are just a
different, more laid-back style is all. New-Tull is more of a mood
listening -- if I'm not in the right mindset, it doesn't do anything for
me. But other times, it's moving as hell. Different strokes for different
    folks.

Thanks to all who answered my Twisted Sister question (and apologies for
calling them hairmetal). I may have to check that album out.

Glad to see there's others that enjoy "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure" as much as
I do. Ever watched the sequel? Far beyond bizarre. Imagine a talking
pig, a hot dog tree, an inch-tall woman, and Pee-Wee with some sort of hair
    fetish -- that's only the beginning. I *think* I liked the movie...but I'm
    not exactly sure.

There's a pretty comprehensive SFaM FAQ on Bogie's DT site you should
probably check out: Go to http://dreamtheater.mit.edu, and look for the link
to the FAQ on the main page. I haven't checked it out for some time, but at
the time when I did, I found it very helpful. Incidentally I got the latest
issue of Metal Maniacs in the mail today, and I would stongly urge you all to
pick up a copy. There's a cool interview with MP talking about the recording
process, plot points in the story, and other stuff. I went to the magazine's
website to see if I could find the interview on a webpage to no avail. But I
did see a link to order a copy of the latest issue on the page, so it may be
worth it for some of you to check it out. Go to http://www.metalmaniacs.com

I for one am looking forward to seeing that new live album of the Wall. It's
been so long since those guys out anything out that I need some new stuff.
Even better, if it's actually some old stuff live. The three remaining guys
IMO just make music and tour now for money only. 2 studio albums in 13 years
is not exactly telling of a bunch of guys that want to make music. It just
seems like that if they want to make some cash, they do a new tour and then
release a new album to support the tour (when most artists tour to support
the album). And personally, I find the only redeeming aspects of those 2
studio albums to be Gilmour's guitar playing. The songs themselves are very
weak IMO. What Do You Want From Me was a much better song the first time I
heard it when it was called Have a Cigar. Also, Keep Talking just sounds like
a generic Floyd rip-off of Wall-era Floyd. And Learning to Fly, which DOES
have some terrific guitar work form Gilmour in it, has really bad lyrics:
"tongue tied and twisted, just an earth bound blisted flight" What's up with
THAT crap??? And On the Turning Away is just boring. Basically, to sum up I'm
just trying to say that I look forward to the new live Wall CD, I'll go see
them live when (if?) they tour again (even if their live permormance lack in
energy IMO), and I don't care if they do a studio album ever again.

Honestly, I think I like "Testimony of the Ancients" the best. I'm a death metal
freak, and I think they were one of the cooler and more original death metal bands
at the time. If you want to hear their rawer sounding stuff, check out "Consuming
Impulse", that one's really good too. "Spheres" is kind of weird, and doesn't
exactly have the best guitar tone, but I really like the synth work, and I just
think they're great songs (except maybe Personal Energy). Anyway...

    Greetings fellow Jamsters.

For those of you interested, (And you all should be) I have placed some
MP3s on my web site. The band is BoneSoda, a three man band comprised
of homegrown Minnesota boys! One of them is a silent Jammer...
I'm sure many of you will find this stuff quite interesting. The recording was
done in two takes at a college recording studio. It's not bad considering
the budget and extreme pressure the musicians were under to get it laid
down quickly. I think you'll find the results pleasing. I would really like to hear
some feedback from people... as would the mystery musician. :o)

As stated by someone, the album is pretty thrown together. Doesn't have the feel of a "real show" Estranged is awesome live, with the piano bridge and Slash's guitar solos. Axl is axl, and will always be axl. Sound quality is pretty good, well mixed and everything. You can sort of tell its a fake crowd noise, but that's ok.I think its worth getting just to have. you need a live album from every band, a collection just isn't complete.

On a DT note, I walked into Guitar Center today, into the drum section and the slaes dude saw my DT shirt and said "Cool Shirt, We just got the Portnoy Video in today", then proceeded with a sales pitch. Cool though.

Question for all those who have the vid:

Is the concert footage on the tapes focused mostly on Mike, or is it spread pretty evenly throughout all members. I know Mike is probably in a good bit, but is it like the DT home vids?

    Hey YtseJon,

'Grace' gives me goosebumps everytime I listen to it. Excellent voice. I also have 'My sweetheart the drunk' album, but IMHO 'Grace' is a lot better, probably because MSTD was unfinished when it was released. I also had the privilege of seeing him live here in Belgium. . and checke dout some of the stuff always mentioned here. I meant to do that a while ago, but time is scarce. Meshuggah (Chaossphere)- was too much for me, too fast, too similar, but, I know I only skipped through titles Strapping Young Lad - I really like Biomech and was not prepared for these walls of punk metal, went out after a minute Spock's Beard (something w/strangers?) - now, I should have checked them out earlier, I really liked that, especially the voice, although it sounds familiar. Has he been on one of those numerous MC Tribute collections?? MVP - I liked Vescara w/Yngwie, but here the vibrato was a little too much and only 'justify' really rocked me. Pride&Glory (new edition w/bonus cd) - I love P&G, Zakk's voice, and I would have bough it, if not for the price. 28 $ is too much for 5 new songs right now. M*******a - S&M, I like some Metallica, but am still growing on it. I think S&M is nice, but only once a year... In flames (something that starts with c...) - I love it, Rock'n Roll T M Stevens(radioactive) - Only a Japan import, thus unaffordable, but phew, that rocked a great deal. Mr. Funk Rock'n'roll for me.

that's it, sorr for wasting bandwidth. seb

No, not at all...the video is cool and all..but if youre not a drummer i dont think its worth spending the high price for it. The footage is just bits and pieces of songs in concert. The only songs that are performed completely are in the studio with mike playing over the cd tracks. (mind you this is extremely awesome to watch still ) For a drummer id say this is a real MUST buy! For non drummers, well not that much..

Someone asked where to find the Scarred website. You can find it at www.focusin.com/scarred, but Ryan doesn't appear to be on top of things having two updates in the past two months and having my order outstanding ( supposedly in the can three separate times now) for a whopping six months. Try not to order from him, IMO. He's gone the way of Prism, me thinks.

For anyone who may not know Rod will be with the Dregs when they open for Dream Theater next year. Rod's one of my favorite drummers with an incredible gift for expression. Mike Portnoy, when asked who could replace him in Dream Theater should the unthinkable ever happen, named Rod as one of a handfull of drummers who could. This is high praise indeed. year. Well, there it is, they've totally murdered that poor kid this time! I just don't know what to make of this album. One minute I'm really blown away the next almost bored. Well, actually not bored, it's just, you know... While WDADU was certainly an interesting attempt in going "out there" as much as possible, sometimes leaving me guessing if they were out of their minds or geniuses, IAW was really accessible while maintaining the level of musically blowing everything else away. Awake was way too gloomy (IMHO) and, let's face it, while Derek certainly was a great showman as well as a nice guy he didn't really fit into the band that well. FII was great (bit too pink floyd-ish though, in every aspect), and now this. When ACoS hit the stores I was in heaven and the mini-tour was killer too, but now we have this strange mix. Has anyone noticed the guitar-glockenspiel unisono parts? Steve Vai would've been proud (anyone remember "salamanders in the sun" off "Flex-able"?) The album has it's Metropolis Pt. 1-reminicences, but I think it more fitting to compare the mood to that of AWAKE ( no, not all parts) But what struck me most is the way some parts sound like Queensryches "Operation Mindcrime", especially the vocal-guitar interaction, and while I liked Mindcrime, it's really strange to find this kind of stuff on a DT-CD. It's great to find that the band has found it's focus again, though, a thing that I think FII lacked to some extend. Also quite heavy, all in all, and while this is something I welcome very much, the blending of parts (in one track) seems to have vanished almost entirely (go listen to IaW once more ,PMU, LTL and Metropolis Pt. 1, mostly) Well, let's see how SFaM fits in with the other stuff on tour. Gawd, next april?!? I'll be dead by then § > |

I would suggest this order for BG: Imaginations From the Other Side Somewhere Far Beyond Tales From the Twilight Hall

Definitely get Imaginations next, tho! It rocks!

All I can say is the same thing everyone else has.... listen a lot. This album gets tons better the more you listen.

To the guy who hates "Lawn Boy": The best introduction to Phish is to go see 'em for yourself, but if you're looking for proggy stuff, I'd reccomend "Junta". It's got "you enjoy myself", "fluffhead", "David Bowie", and "Divided Sky", some of their best epics, IMHO. You can't expect to hear Dream Theater or King Crimson, though, because while Phish is greatly prog influenced, but they are not what we generally think of as prog rock. If you don't like Lawn Boy, they just might not be for you. (How can you not like "The Squirming Coil?!?!?! =^) Borrow Junta from someone before you pass judgement, though..... -Banjoman

    Hey gang -

Does anyone know if this year's fan club CD's are being distributed yet? If not, does anyone know when they will be? My guess is that people have not received them yet, otherwise people would be posting about them. So far, I've noticed that at one point several Jams ago, Steffan had it listed as "Now Playing", you lucky bastard! I guess it pays to have connections, eh? ;-) Any info anyone has would be helpful. Thanks!

    Hello,

as I see, for the most people here, I&W is the best album DT ever made. Not for me. For me, the best is SFAM, then Awake and _then_ I&W/FII. Anybody with the same opinion?

    I agree nearly completely:

    1. Scenes From a Memory 2. Awake 3. A Change of Seasons 4. Images and Words 5. Falling Into Infinity 6. When Dream and Day Unite

WDaDU, minus Charlie plus James, may have been higher up - as a singer I'm particularly sensitive to Charlie's unbecoming voice... :)

Most of the concert footage is actually focussed on mike himself and his playing "technique" during concerts.... I like it like that becasue on 5 years in a Live Time I really wanted to see more of mike playing. I am glad I got to see him on this video. The "Home Video" type fptage of LTE is great because it shows alot of them writing the music from LTE 1 and 2... It's a great set!!! Pick it up!
