Eep. I like Phish, I like Wagner. I also have a distinct affinity for
Opeth, Tristania, Amorphis, Vanden Plas, Dissection, Death, etc., etc. I
like John McLaughlin and Al DiMeola, I like Green Day. So shoot me. ;-)

To each unto his own. Seriously people, I don't believe Mendelssohn would
care two cents whether someone "appreciated" his music. I happen to think
that "Slave to the Traffic Light" and "Harry Hood" (in addition to "David
Bowie," "You Enjoy Myself" and "Taste") are veritable progfests of their
own, albeit slightly heavy in the "rock" flavor.

Please don't jump down my throat, thank you. For that matter, I happen to
really enjoy Finnish shouting choirs, too. Now that requires a truly
    "open" mind to appreciate. ;-)

<< hey guys, TSO is supposed to be on some Xmas TV special on the 14th (Tuesday) No clue what station. >>

It's supposed to be on the Fox Family channel at 10:00 PM EST. The only details I know about it, I got from their official website (http://www.trans-siberian.com). All I know is that it will be called "The Ghosts Of Christmas Eve", and will feature guest performers Jewel and Michael Crawford (of Phantom Of the Opera fame). According to the TV guide we got in our Sunday paper this morning, the show is an hour long. Does anyone out there know anything else about the show? For example, what will the format of the show be? Is it a re-enactment of the story of their "Ghosts Of Christmas Eve" album with the music backing it? It is a live concert with guest vocalists? I can't wait for the show... it sounds like it's going to be amazing! My wife and I got our X-Mas tree yesterday and, in continuing our annual tradition, we decorated it while cranking TSO on the living room stereo. Awesome!!! If any of you are looking for the ultimate X-Mas album, I can't think of anything better than TSO's "Christmas Eve and Other Stories". HIGHLY recommended!! (Their "Ghosts Of Christmas Eve" album was also great, but not as good IMHO as their first one.)

Well, two friends of mine (Baf and Buffy) comprise "Hidden Agenda," and sometimes use my music or invite me to play a metal guitar lead (credited as Muad'dib).

    <http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/5/hidden_agenda.html>

The most "prog" peices are "Violence is the Answer" (Eddie Jobson fans will cackle in delight at Baf's parodying) and the maybe-too-prog "Seek the Darkness."

Since the question was specifically about 'Jammers: I wrote the music for "Slaves in Hell," played the guitar lead and sing in The Slut Chorus on "Braindead" from that page. I think I may be in The Slut Chorus on "Heavy Metal Slut" but we can all be forgiven for what we did in our college years eh?

The content of the music is engineered (Baf is MS ElecE, Buffy PhD CivE w/PE) to make the hair on Tipper Gore's head stand straight up and turn incandescantly white. Don't play this stuff for children or Jehovah will smite thee.

Baf and Buffy, the core of Hidden Agenda, are right now working on a "serious" album which will have several real prog tracks. Buffy is an unabashed Dream Theater fan and is currently addicted to SFaM. Baf isn't that impressed with DT, calls them "Kansas without the subtlety." Baf is a smartass ;-)

As stated on the official site, there is a nice 5 page interview with James Mike and John P. in the new Metal Edge. February in December? Ok I know, but you know how mags work. Also editors and writers list top 10 ten albums of 99, and SFAM is on 3 peoples lists, #1 on none other than WWF superstar Chris Y2J Jericho. He;'s the shit. Besides his Metal is Jericho column every month, he's in a band called Fozzy Osborne, him, and the three guys from Stuck Mojo. they play 80's covers of metal songs. Kick Ass. The new Penthouse is good too, (a girl I was with from work bought, I had to partake in it a bit) :-)

I am glad to hear some of you guys are into Jeff Buckley. He is by far my favourite musician ever. It is just a shame he only got to finish one album...... I sent a video to mike portnoy once, and just for kicks i sent him a Jeff Buckley tape along with it. He said he already has Jeff Buckley's CD "Grace," and was very saddened by his death. He also told me to check a guy called Kevin Gilbert, who also died young (how did Kevin Gilbert die by the way? and for those of you who are curious, Jeff Buckley drowned in 1997) The point is, you all need to check out Jeff Buckley.

Best cd yet!, Better sound, better vocals, better acoustic parts...its incredible! What do you think Rogerio? If you dont know Opeth and been tempted to check them out, THIS makes a perfect starting spot i think...its their best yet, in a already excellent catalogue... easily my #2 Cd of the year...tied with "the light at the end of the world" by my Dying bride (awesome comeback to their signature sound IMO) ...

Ummm... I may not have all the details perfect, but it had something to do with masterbation, a noose, and asphixiation. It wasn't an intentional suicide for all intents and purposes. The guy just got his kicks out of choking himself while he flogged on his log. Looks like he liked it a bit too much. *shrug*

I understand your frustration, but have you considered the possibility that the problem you're experiencing is exclusive to YOUR player? Maybe there's something wrong with it... Or maybe not. The only way to find out is to do an A-B comparison with an identical unit. The problem could also be model dependent. I don't know. You could call a friend of mine that works for Panasonic. His name is John Phelps. He can be reached at: 612-854-8624. Perhaps he could offer some inside information otherwise unavailable to the general public. John has worked for Matsushita (Panasonic's parent company) for at least 15 years as a service technician. He's also been involved in the failure analysis process within his normal duties as a technician.

I bought a Panasonic SL-SW505J for the wife last year. The thing has performed flawlessly from day one. It's surprisingly good sounding for a portable. Her player did benefit from a better pair of headphones. I'm sure yours would also once the distortion problems have been remedied. Have you tried using another pair of headphones to see if they were the culprit?

The distortion you're describing is inexcusable. The manufacturer should be held liable. If you can't remedy your problems with a good pair of headphones and fresh batteries, your player should be sent back for repairs. At the very least I'd give John a call and pick his brain for a solution. I assume (by the model number you've provided) that your unit is one of their lower models. I would certainly hope that Panasonic didn't compromise the players presentation of music in the interest of extending battery life or minimizing production costs.

Even with low cost portable players, they should still do a reasonable job of playing music without adding obvious distortion. One of the biggest problems with home audio gear is dirty power supplies. Since you're running on battery power that's not even an issue. I wish you luck.

Well, its been 24 hrs since the show began & holy shit... Lemme begin w/ a boring little "How I got there" story. I've only driven into Manhatten twice before, so...I'm not really confident driving to a place where I'mnot even sure where I'm headed :)

Left my house round 5:30 from Jersey, & wouldn't ya know it, I hit a crater of a pothole 10 mins from my house & *poof*, flat tire. Race to change it, find my bro, bribe him into using his car, & an hour later, we're finally headed in the right direction. (yeah, yeah, get on w/ it... sue me :) Thru the Tunnel round 7:30ish & we're almost there, cept the directions I got, sucked. Somehow I ended up on the Hudson Hwy. Long story mae less long, we did make it at round 8ish, got a GREAT parking space too (closed the garage next to it just before me, so the opened up a few "Theater only" space on the street) OK, I'm done now, you can all return to your seats...

The show started bout 1/2 hr late, but Paul O'Neill was out & about signing for anyone & everyone who came up to him. Very class act, he signed my TSO:CE &oS booklet & my friends ticket stub,I even met his wife (primarilly cuz she was just standing around & got introduced to everyone else standing there). In my area alone there was a huge variety of listeners; 2 elderly ladies (55-60) sitting directly behind me, a married couple (mid 30's) next to me, a few people my age (25) the other side, & even a few rows ahead, there were young kids (10-13). It was so great to see that variety all there for the joy of music...

Oh yeah, the music :) As I told Paul after the show "Man, that was 2 hours of pure magic." In all my years of listening to & performing music, I have to say, those 120 minutes were the pinnacle of music. Broadway meets rock, classic & rock fused into one masterful night. They played , if not everything, most everything from "Christmas Eve & other Stories", complete w/ narrative storyteller, & several styles of lead vocals (& some fine looking female vocalists). Obviously "Sarajevo" got most people bouncing around, but only because thats what most people knew coming in. When the "story" was complete, they played some new stuff thats gonna be on "Beethoven's Last Night" that made my jaw drop. "Figaro" , & a piece that contained "Flight of the BumbleBee" & The 5th Symphony... man, that is gonna be ne CD I get Immediately, prolly THE most anticipated CD of this year for me.

All said & done, if TSO is coming anywhere near you; do whatever you have to do to see them. You know the tunes, you've heard the CD, but the emotion that comes thru live is unparralled in anything I've ever heard.

The only thing that suckedafterwards was that the theater people threw us out while we were attempting to wait for the band to make an appearance *shrug* whatever, I'll catch um next time :)

This reminds me of a question I've been meaning to ask you, Al. What should I look for in a pair of headphones? A couple of years ago I bought a set of Koss TD/65 heaphones (they're the kind that totally envelope your ears; I needed a good set of studiophones), and I've been very happy with them. They have great bass response and (what I feel is) great realism in sound. But at the same time I know that they're relatively low-grade headphones, considering they only cost me $35 two years ago. Anyway, what I'm asking is: What should I look for in a good set of headphones? Should they be closed or open construction (i.e. do I want a cushion around my ears so no sound gets out)? What is a good price range for lower-mid- or mid-fi headphones (if they exist; I know you're not a big fan of headphones because they ruin the stereo field and all)?

At the very least I'd give John a call and pick his > brain for a solution. I assume (by the model number you've provided) > that your unit is one of their lower models. I'm not sure if it was exclusive to the MP3s I had, but somebody had sent me tracks from this album and one of the things that I noticed was that they were mastered extremely high - so high, in fact, that if I played them in Winamp without ANY equalization on them, they distorted; I had to turn down the preamp in Winamp to compensate. Maybe this could be the problem and the player is merely playing it correctly? Again, I don't know if it was just my MP3s or that the album was actually mastered that way (I don't have the CD to compare it to).

What *I* ask is a relatively simple question: Does your player do this with other albums, or is it exclusive to this one? I'd say that could easily be a deciding factor in your answers about this player.

yeah.. i'm an avid buckley fan.. i've got everything he released and love pretty much everything except some of the shit they never should have put on the second sketches CD.. he was just fuckin around on a four track and when he died the label felt this obligation to give that crap to his fans... i'd be SO pissed if ANYONE heard my four track fuck around shit.

as far as jeff being a "weak imitator of his dad tim", i'd have to disagree.. i'm an avid tim buckley fan as well.. jeff's definately an imitator but not a "weak" one.. i think he does a damn good job imitating :)... he has his own inovative streak as well.. i love both those guys.. sucks that early death runs in the family

Question for hairmetal fans out there:

What was the name of the song for which Twisted Sister (?) was filming the video when Pee-Wee Herman rode through on his bicycle (in the excellent, excellent movie "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure")? Went something like...

"...'cause I'm free You're gonna burn in hell!"

Always thought that was a badass song when I was a wee tot.

Suggestion to anyone over 6' tall contemplating sitting in the balcony at the Tower Theater in Philadelphia: don't. I saw Yes there tonight and, man, was I wishing I was limbless by the end of their set. Place was built for midgets!

YtseJon wrote abot MP's new instructional video: <foot and I felt odd doing that.. whereas Virgil Donati and MP both say to <do what feels comfy and they both use their right feet...

Now I know where MP's fast double bass technique comes from... He has two right feet !!! That explains everything.. I ordered it also, but know a part of the suprise is gone.

    Another thought.

Goodness, I sold 31 Blockbuster rewards kits this weekend and earned 55 dollars I could spend in the store plus my 30% discount. I got for free: NIN-the Fragile GNR Live Era 97-93 Dead Poets Society My girlfriend a Sarah Mclachlan CD (who I think is the best female performer around in pop today)

not bad for doing my job. here's the point: I need to be hit on the head really hard. how can a band, GNR, be at the pinacle of their creativity and be as popular as they were to dropping off the face of the planet? Two words Axl Rose. My god these were a killer rock band. Shame they couldn't reach terms. the NIN CD is awesome, and I love Dead Poets Society.

I got my metal head friend to buy SFAM from Amazon.com he says "It has its parts" I guess he's not one for James soft voice and Jordan's tinkering of ebony and ivory, or plastic keys on his Kurzweil. Anyways, goodnight.
