Yes, this wasn't the first time, they are doing this quite often.
Notice that it's not only James, it's also (and especially) Mike
who's mocking at their own material.

Well, after having played this song about a gazillion times it's just
natural that they are getting bored and want to mess around with it a
    bit (a good bit).

    Hi, folks:

While many of you are no doubt aware how well Jordan Rudess fits in with Dream Theater, some of you might not be aware of what a total musical chameleon Jordan is, able to fit into almost any musical situation. Jordan will be part of a series of performances by new age artist Paul Winter this weekend in New York. I thought some of you might be interested in the following info:

S O L S T I C E C E L E B R A T I O N ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Paul Winter's 20th anniversary celebration of an ancient holiday tradition that predates New Year's Day and Christmas will feature the world premiere of new music and theatrical effects, with world music percussionist Mickey Hart, formerly of the Grateful Dead, as a special guest. The new show will incorporate a variety of instrumental, human and animal voices and a galaxy of percussion from around the world. The stage set will be centered upon a new 20-foot-tall "Tree of Sounds" entirely composed of gongs, bells and giant chimes.

More than ten thousand people are expected at the non-denominational event in New York's vast Cathedral of St. John the Divine, and they will be joined by hundreds of thousands of listeners to the Tenth National Public Radio (NPR) broadcast of Paul Winter's celebration.

Performances of Paul Winter's 20th Anniversary Winter Solstice Celebration, a musical, theatrical and environmental spectacle, are on Thursday 9 December at 7.30pm Friday 10 December at 7.30pm Saturday 11 December at 2pm and 7.30pm

Joining Paul Winter will be: - world music percussionist, Mickey Hart, formerly of the Grateful Dead - concert cellist and master improviser, Eugene Friesen - Armenian percussionist and vocalist Arto Tuncboyaciyan, from the Anatolian region of Turkey - Irish Uilleann piper Jerry O'Sullivan - keyboards wizard Jordan Rudess - organist Dorothy Papadakos - the Forces of Nature dancers and drummers, directed by Abdel Salaam.

Some $38 general admission seats are still available for Paul Winter's 20th Anniversary Winter Solstice Celebration from the Cathedral Box Office at (212)662-2133, although reserved seats have sold out. For charge card orders by phone, buyers can call CityTix, at (212)581-1212. Tickets are available online via http://www.livingmusic.com/concerts/wintersolstice99.html

The Cathedral of St. John the Divine is located at Amsterdam Ave. and West 112th St. in New York City. Travel information to the Cathedral is available online from http://www.livingmusic.com/concerts/directions.html.

last jam, someone wrote: The SIlmarillion was written later, but it tells stories that take place long before the hobbit. It's basically all the old tales of Middle Earth.

Actually, I believe The Silmarillion was written BEFORE all of Tolkien's later "middle earth" stories. It was written mostly for Tolkien's own reference, and wasn't published until after he died. I may be wrong though, as I'm not a big Tolkeinophile.

I believe the truth is this, and I could consult several Tolkienphiles which I know, but I'm too lazy. Anyway, after completing the Hobbit, Tolkien was not sure what his next work would be, but he had a great desire to write about the history of middle earth. He began work on the Silmarillion but was paused when he recieved continuous fanmail demanding more stories about hobbits. At this point, he put the work aside, and began working on The Lord of the Rings. This too could be wrong as well, I suppose. Oh, and the someone mentioned above was me, as well ;)

    Hi all

first off, thanks to everybody who has submitted their top 10 of 99 lists - but keep them coming so that the poll is as representative as possible and also contains as many good albums as possible. Please send your lists to me directly.

Concept albums - my favourite concept "album" is without doubt "The Ring Of The Nibelung" by Richard Wagner. Huge, awe-inspiring, goose-pimple inducing and very, very long - a complete live performance takes 4 nights. A few years ago, I fulfilled a dream and went to Bayreuth, Germany, to see a complete cycle. Simply stunning. And the story that is told is much better than "Lord Of The Rings" (for me, at least). Pass the tissues...

I was back in England again over the weekend - the place is really going to the dogs. No wonder bands like Dream Theater don't play there. What sort of country is it where the pubs shut at 11 pm? One good point though: my parents gave me 8 different bottles of single malt whisky to bring back. Winter can come and I'm prepared.

stay safe and happy listening Neil Gallop (neil.gallop@softwareag.com) Currently playing: Tristania - Beyond The Veil

IMHO, the album is OK, but definitely not as Wall or WYWH. It seems like very atmospheric album, doesn't have so much music, it's more ambientic. I guess as a PF fan you SHOULD get. It's decent. Blah, forget that, I have a friend who really likes it! :) So, it's up to you.

    >but the best Concept Album IMHO is 'Nightfall in Middle-Earth' by Blind >Guardian - at least for fans of >the fantasy genre!

See, now, I got 'Nightfall', and the only thing I can compare it to is anything by Manowar. Yes, Manowar. That cheesy metal band? They're so old they owe Jesus $4? Yeah, them. I was actually disappointed that I spent the money for the disc, but kept it for those times that I want to remind myself what NOT to do as a musician. The harmonies, the screaming, high-pitched guitars... all reminded me of that (to put it bluntly) gay shit that Manowar puts out.

"Rain falling, across the land... Electric guitar, in my hand (YEAH!!)..."

Heh, funny story about Manowar - a friend of mine did security for them (they wanted nine security guards for some rinky-dink club here in Boston - probably thought they were gonna get lynched), and they brought this girl on stage, and said, "Show us your tits, good maiden!" So she goes, "I don't think my boyfriend would like that." The singer says, "If he were a TRUE Brother of Metal, he wouldn't mind. Now, off with your shirt!"

Meanwhile, the entire crowd is spitting at the band, screaming "YOU SUCK!!" and my buddy's friend Toebreaker (private emails will get you the story of why his name is Toebreaker) is backstage, eyes wide, going, "These guys are my metal heroes..."

    heh...

    > I was wondering what you guys (and gals) all thought about Bjork. > Do any of you have any opinions of her work?

Well, IMHO, the only time I've thought a Bjork CD sounded good was when I used it as a frisbee and it crashed in a parking lot. They're visually appealing through an AK-47 Mounted scope, however - and a 7.62 will shatter anything nicely. Weird for the sake of being weird alone, as opposed to being genuine, she should have stuck to acting when she was nine and then been relegated to the "Whatever happened to that child actor?" closet. Your money would be better spent on Lorenna McKennitt.

On a lighter note, I rediscovered Haji's Kitchen last night when a friend of mine returned their disc to me. What a good band. Their bassist blows me away.

Did anyone notice that the *Dance* of Eternity is in fact the least danceable song on the whole CD? I think it goes through so many time signature changes that it's impossible for anyone to keep pace. And also - isn't the dance of eternity supposed to be love? Very cha- otic love indeed if you see how DT depicts it.
