Yeah, mine too. I suspect that its absencwe from the live shows may have
something to do with it being written largely by Derek, (I seem to remember -
can someone confirm or deny this?) ><

well obviously ACoS was written long before Derek was in the band. now of
course he was there when they made changes, and im sure derek contributed,
but the another world section was part of the original AcoS with a few
different lyrics and slightly different musical parts.

Ah, yes. The cover art for that boot is worth more then the audio ingrained
on the CD, though. Jeez. That's the worst boot I ever shelled out $5 for.
:P A very apt name for the boot. :) It's more like "German Audience" than
    "Dream Theater."

    > 1) How helpful are the lessons?

Pretty good. John makes you want to hang up your guitar in the middle of
the tape, though, with his sixteenth notes at 208 BPM. hehehe. The

So do I... I think his parts complemented JP's perfectly...

    >but JR seems to be a much more interesting soloist.

Dunno, maybe you feel that way because of his better technique... But Kev's solos are amazing... I mean, check out The Ytsejam (the LiT version comes to my mind immediately), TTT and Scarred... These solos are very, very good... Don't get me wrong, I love JR's sounds (I don't think there's anything wrong with them, as some people here on the jam do), and he is probably the fastest keyboard player out there... I just wished he'd slow down a bit from time to time, it gets kinda predictable when he starts soloing, 'cause you know a flood of notes are coming... His note choices keep it interesting though...

To the dude who was thinking of getting Cynic's "Focus": be forewarned that if you don't like cookie monster vocals, then you won't like this CD. That's what turned it off for me. Listened to it twice, couldn't deal with a big furry blue monster singing to me, sold the CD.

To the dude who was looking for some of Pino Palladino's more serious bass stuff: he did one track on a John McLaughlin CD with Jeff Beck and Vin Coliuta (sp?) on drums, this improv jazz/blues tune that just SMOKES. My old drummer played it for me about three, four years ago. Do I remember the name of the song? Nope. Do I remember the name of the CD? Nope. All I know is that the jacket was white, and there was only one track with Pino on it. Somewhere, lurking in my room, is a copy of Bass Player with Pino and Mark King (from Level 42, "Mr. Underrated" himself); if I can find it I'll post his (as of then) discography.

To the dude who was thinking of picking up "Tyranny" by Shadow Gallery: if you liked the first one, but couldn't stand the singer, then you might feel the same way about "Tyranny". Mine ended up becoming a coaster at my desk at work, personally. :)

I wish Damian Wilson's voice was the standard progMETAL vocalists (note the "metal" distinction -- most progrock vocalists blow most progmetal vocalists out of the water...just an observation, no need for anyone to point out the many exceptions to the rule). He doesn't sound too great, true, on the "Extinct Instinct" album, but try out my personal favorite Threshold disc, "Wounded Land". At times, he's almost a dead ringer for Robert Plant, and that can't be bad, can it? (Please ignore all Led Zep live shows post-73 when considering question at hand). He also does a stellar job as 'the Knight' on the latest from Ayreon, "Into The Electric Castle"...which somebody else was recently ragging on. To that person: Ayreon is primarily a progrock band, not a progmetal band, and an extremely eclectic progrock band at that. Try listening to it with more of an open mind, or, if that doesn't work, sticking to more standard stuff. What to look forward to in your future repeated listenings: ITEC is chock-full of melodies -- I find myself humming bits and pieces of songs from the album...far more often than I probably should.

Speaking of quality progmetal singers (not that we were, but uh...), the WIXQ-FM Metal Department just got a hold of a new album by a band called Control Denied. I'd never heard of 'em. Looked through the liner notes, did a little web-research, and found out the band is made up of practically the entirety of death metal pioneer band Death...but now they do progmetal with CLEAN vocals. And these CLEAN vocals (provided by Tim Aymar, formerly of Psycho Scream) aren't even whiny, screamy, or particularly high-pitched either. Anyone who likes their progmetal technical, or just plain good, should definitely check this album out.

DTC: Another progmetal band everyone should look into is Dream Theater. I hear they're pretty decent...

    Greetings ye 'jamanoids...

Bruce said: >Not sure if any of you jammers are going to the Vai show tomorrow >(11/30/99) at the Variety Playhouse, but I'll be there wearing my LTE >shirt.

Fuck, NOW I see this (I just got back from the show). hehe

A big shout goes out to Bruce (though I didn't see him) as well as Brian "Soundchaser" Kelley and Dave/Zildjian, both of whom I did see.

Some quick comments about the Vai show:

    1) Opening act Eric Sardinas is one of the best opening acts I've seen. Howling bluesy guitar, with elements of John Lee Hooker, Johnny Winter, and George Thorogood, but more raw than any of those. He could teach even Thorogood a thing or two about playing slide. Coaxes some amazing sounds out of some old beat-up guitars. Great stuff (he even plays slide with a beer bottle and makes it sound good). The bass player too was very entertaining (at one point he was standing ON TOP OF his double bass while playing it). :)

    2) Vai rules. One of the highest-energy shows I've seen this year or indeed ANY time. My face hurts from grinning so much. Vai and crew were having a ball onstage and it showed -- wisecracks, playacting, little anecdotes in between songs, and general onstage shenanigans (it culminated in the last song of the encore, "The Attitude Song", where Vai and the bunch were joined by Eric Sardinas for ten minutes of pure attitude-filled jamming.

    3) Mike Keneally is a genius. Nobody should be allowed to play guitars AND keyboards as well as he does. He's also a completely down-to-earth friendly guy, spending more than 15 minutes chatting with us outside after the show despite the cold.

    4) Mike Mangini is a fucking MONSTER. When he gets behind that massive drumkit and cuts loose -- step back and watch the jaws drop all round the room. Pure power, pure speed, TOTAL limb independence, incredible rhythmic syncopation, and complete ambidexterity. His solo was over all too soon. Side note: Mangini is really tiny when you meet him face-to-face! Looks like he weighs a hundred pounds soaking wet and stands about five-five. Unbelievable for somebody who abuses the drums as much as he does. He too is a genuinely nice guy.

Final note: If Vai and crew are coming anywhere near you on this tour, GO. You'll only regret it if you miss the show.

    cheers, Phil

I find JM's column in Bass Player highly confusing. Making scales out of three note snippets of modes in backward order, and whatnot. Does anyone understand what the goal of these excercises are? With a little advertising, I think LTE could >(have, now that they're no longer with us) sold a LOT >more. Well all my friends are buying, that's the best >I can do :)

Of course it would sell more and become more widely known, but there are some other obstacles apart from the lack of relevant advertising. I, for example, live in Poland and you just can't see any Magna Carta releases (including both LTEs and Explorers' Club) here in any major "good record stores". It just does not have any official distribution here and I know that people would buy it, my friends at least but it is just impossible. The best way would probably be to do an online purchase, but very few of my friends have access to the net and are afraid of buying stuff online (you know credit card frauds and the likes..)

I myself spotted LTE 2 in one small record store (mainly heavy music) but it cost twice the price of a "normal" record. I know LTE is worth every penny. I asked the guy behind the counter why so expensive. He said that the CD has been privately imported from Germany and it just had to cost that much. I did not buy it although I very much wanted to, and no way could I afford it. It cost twice my weekly lunch budget!

Sorry for my broken English, hope you understood anyway.

Oh boy oh boy, so much to ramble about. ;-)

    (1) Cynic <-> goodness (my fellow CS heads will understand ;-) (2) The "new" Shadow Gallery, _Tyranny_, was a definite buy from CDNow after my first mp3 listening of "Stiletto in the Sand," the album opener. These guys have been around for a while and are not lacking in the technique department, either. At times their music comes off sounding really "cold," but what music doesn't have those moments (I'm thinking Dimension Zero, a European superband, currently ;-)? The first, second and last three tracks are my favorites. Honestly, I don't see the DT connection. Perhaps I'm missing it... (3) I was browsing through some recent 'jams and noticed that someone mentioned the fiery DiMeola/McLaughlin/DeLucia album, _Friday Night in San Francisco_, and so I put it on (I have the remastered copy). Wow. I can't believe I haven't listened to this more (must have been an impulse buy a couple years ago that simply got shoved into the bottom of my drawer ;-)! What is so absolutely amazing about this album is that one can feel the fiery tension and effortless interplay amongst the three virtuosos. I've been stuck on the first track forever (hrm, over 12 hours now?)... So... if you're wanting to take a break from whatever rut-type of music you're listening to, try this album. Durn impressive if you ask me, and that's a *VAST* understatement.

In any case, just taking a break from typing an awful physics lab report. More random thoughts from moi... :-)

It's an extremely useful video if you have the disipline to work out with John. It's guaranteed to strenghten your picking technique and overall coordination of both hands. Some people mentioned that it's not too useful, but I disagree. Although things do get pretty fast at times, John is teaching you a very basic things, to be accurate, consistant and in time. If you learn that from the video, the video is worth its weight in gold! :) Apart from technique, he talks alot about DT and his beginnigs as guitar god :), his influences and stuff. And you get to admire his full blown (at the time) guitar rack, he explains alot about it and some of his guitars.. In between John plays excerpts of Gemini, a wonderful tune, that I hope will get released someday.... Buy it!

Clockwork is incredible. Period. 'Surface Tension' was easily in my top three of the year. The fact that they released such a wild, mature album so early in their careers is all the more impressive. They sound nothing like Shadow Gallery (who I also happen to like).

    > By the way, how did those guys get Sean to play on the album? I haven't >heard of Clockwork from anywhere but this list before, so I didn't know they >were that big (or not that big...)

Clockwork and Gordian Knot are both on Sensory (the label of Laser's Edge) and Sean Malone IS Gordian Knot (you probably already knew that).

I can deal with the lead singer...I think that they are an incredible band. Steve La Monica>>

Well Steve, I have read several reviews for the album, and many of them comment on the improvement in the vocal department on Tyranny over past albums. It's not that he's really changed his style all that much... maybe it's just mixed better? I don't know, I can't put my finger on it. But I do think that this album is Mike Baker's shining moment with the band.

Additionally, in general, everyone I know that in the past has at least partially LIKED any of their past stuff has been completely knocked on their ass at how great "Tyranny" is compared to anything they've ever done. My God, even my WIFE stole the CD on me and I didn't see it for days! :-) Seriously, compared to their past releases, on Tyranny the songs themselves and song writing are SOOO much better, and the quality of the recording and mixing is SOOO much better. And the storyline! Wow... In a nutshell, I would seriously recommend it even if you marginally like any of their older stuff.

IMHO, this is almost a perfect album. I rank it right up there definitely in my top 10 all time, and probably in my top 5 as well. As far as concept albums, O:M, SFAM, and Tyranny form the holy trinity in my book. :-)

Anyway, I would say to anyone who even somewhat likes the band, most definitely give it a shot. I think you'll be stunned. And Steve, if you do decide to get it, I'd be curious to find out what you think. Drop a little post to the Jam with your review when you get it, okay? :-)

Hope this helps. Laterz... Matt T.

Does anyone else notice that for a live segue, DT really should try playing Wurm (from Yes' Starship Trooper - that's the one with Steve Howe on 5YIaL, non-Yesfans) after Strange Deja Vu? Every time it ends, that keeps popping into my head. If you've learned to play it yet, just try jamming along at the end man, it's a blast!

Last November I purchased a Hewlett Packard CD Writer Plus 8100i CD-R/RW drive. About 2 weeks ago I was trying to burn an audio disc, and once it was burned, I plyed it, and there was nothing but silence...the tracks were all there, and the times for the tracks were proper...just nothing played. Being very pissed off I tried again...same thing. So I try burning a data disc...once again the disc is burned, but no info on the disc. Finally I try burning an audio disc using Disc at once...when I do this I get an error saying "D0100:I/O error (05/26/00) - Command error-Invalid field in parameter list" When you click for help it says: Command error - invalid field in parameter list

    Reason for receiving this message:

One or more of the reserved fields in the parameter list of a command were set, or a selected option is not supported by the CD recorder.

    What to do:

    · Check for faulty or disconnected cables between your computer and your CD recorder.

    · Check for improper termination of the bus (SCSI only).

My cables are fine, I don't have SCSI ANYTHING...I tried uninstalling CD creator 4 and going back to 3.01...checked the properties of my drive, everything seems fine...the drive works perfectly as a normal CD-ROM drive, and reads/writes CD-RW with no problem...it just burns blank info to CD-R's. There's no reported IRC conflicts or anything like that, and all the idiot-proof stuff (i.e. is it plugged in) has been checked. So...anyone have a clue on this one before I send it off for repair??? Please reply to me, and NOT the Jam...ThanX!!!

hehehe. I still think Marillion's Misplaced Childhood is the best concept album of all time. :) But that's just me. Or was it Europe's The Final Countdown? I can never remember. :D

But Tyranny is leagues ahead of CiS, IMO. But I don't see any improvement vocally. I never saw that one was necessary actually. I think M. Baker is a kickass singer as he is.

    Hey Jammers,

Someone was wondering where to get Gordian Knot. This is not a suggestion of where to find it, but I just wanted to say that strangely enough I found a copy at Tower Records in New Orleans. I bought it at the end of last school year and had to pay $16.99 for it, but it was definitely worth it.

Also, after finding out that Steve Vai will be playing New Orleans, I have decided that I must make that show. I have been pretty psyched about seeing him live ever since getting the G3 live in concert CD. Should be quite a show. I haven't gotten the new Steve Vai album, but I have listened to a little bit of it and it rocks.

    Later, Kevin

Misplaced Childhood is perfect... except for Kayleigh, for the life of me, I cannot bring myself to like that song... anyway, I listened to it for a while, and though it took a while for it to grow on me, it's now one of my favorite cd's. It's perfect for all occasions: If I wanna hear a good ballad I play Lavender, if I'm feelin moody I play Bitter Suite or Blind Curve, feeling pretty good I play Childhood's End, and for a good anthem I play White Feather. Despite how disjointed the story (there isn't even really one) is, I still think it flows great as an album.. like goin through the highs and lows of Fish's psyche. Anyway, that's my op..
