You guys all realize that Winamp does decode mp3 files to wav, right? Just
making sure. :)

Hey everyone,
I've recently posted the Majesty Offical 1986 Demo MP3s
on Lines in the Sand. Feel free to grab them.
Also on the site are Lie featuring Jordan Rudess and the original
version of A Change of Seasons from The Dance of Eternity.
Lastly, if any of you have a Dream Theater recording you would
like to share with the rest of the Ytse-community, contact me!
I would be delighted to host the show in MP3 format on LITS.
Take care,

So I'm walking home from the bus which brings me to Carmel from my JC
and who should drive up but my mom. So, I think she's gonna take me to
get some lunch, but low and behold, she tells me, "Your friends are at
home waiting to take you to LA." This was totally un-expected. Girbie
had e-mailed me saying that he'd be happy to give me a ride to LTE on his
way from Oregon, but I hadn't received a follow-up call due to a screw-up
in the communication of my number to him, so I had contented myself in the
realization that I would not be attending this historic event. Well, to
make a long story short, I left for LA with Trever, Girbie and Sis, the
queen of prog. We stopped for food in BFE and got to LA just in time for
the doors opening at the Rocksy. The vibe was friendly, music-oozing, and
predominently male. Inside, though, we happened on Chris Oates and his
significant other, the one and only Gerbil, hope I spelled that right.
Amanda was a bit different than I had immagined, being that she was bearly
barely legal and attended UCLA, though these weren't unpleasant surprises.
The show was incredible of course, though tremendously bass heavy.
So much so, in fact, that I rarely heard any of John or Jordan's solows in
the mix, which I was concerned about. Afterward, we left to ajourn to
Denny's with Lisa, Rick, and Younice, a so-cool jammer who I hadn't met
yet and who won my instantaneous respect when he honestly had no idea who
Third Eye Blind or Matchbox 20 were. (I love you, man!) We talked of
fudge and it's dirivitive topics and of lesbian seagulls and sex on
college campuses and more fudge and Amanda's fudge and ice balls and other
appetizing things.
Finally, the original four retired to a cheap, $60/night, hotel,
where we talked of things coming out in one piece and slept deeply until
ten A.M. We visitted the biggest Guitar Center in Cal as well as the
Carvine store. Finally, we left for the long, but not unpleasant drive
back to our respective homes. We stopped and used a porta-potty with all
the luxuries of plumming and ate lots of food and listened to some really
cool prog.
I think, even more than the cool concert, I enjoyed the company of
some three fine individuals for a long extended period of time. I would
do it all again in a heartbeat just for the fun of it all and to make
tasteless jokes with Girbie and Trever. I'd lie to say hi to Dave and
Kim, and say thank God I was right when I guessed that it was you, Kim,
who came up to me and said "Guess who" in that noisy club. I wish you
nuts could have hung around. Hi to that poser, Mosh, who was too much of
a lame-ass to even show up, and hi to Sach, who I met for the first time.
Hi also to the hard-working Scott Hansen. It was fun running into you
all. Jammers, especially west-coast jammers who I've met, just rock my
ass. B well.

Ties.... I've gotta agree with you about NightWish.
I've been reading the posts about them over on the Symphony X mailing list
(teof) and I went to http://www.nightwish.com and downloaded the sample
mp3's and I was blown away as well.....
This band sounds much like Symphony X, MUCH to my DELIGHT.
I also tried out the FTP site where many more full NightWish mp3's are
available for download and I dig each mp3 I download and listen to.
Only problem is that NightWish are a Finnish band, and I'm in the United
States. I haven't found a mail-order site that carries NightWish's CDs yet.
I like the mp3's but I much prefer CDs to listen to. If anyone knows a
respectable mail-order site where I can order NightWish's CDs I would much
appreciate the info. Thanks

We will begin work on the new Dream Theater CD this coming week....
We will begin writing and recording on Monday, Feb. 8th 1999
at Bear Tracks Studios in Suffern, NY with engineer Doug Oberkirker.
(same studio and engineer as I&W, Live at the Marquee and ACOS....)
We will self-produce (with a mixer TBA) and spontaniously write & record (ala
LTE).
(The big difference will be that we will have 2-3 months to do it, instead of
1-2 weeks.)
Recording will probably last through to May, as we will take March off for the
birth of my son......
We are very excited to begin the latest chapter of DT history and begin "the
Jordan era".....
The music will be all new and freshly written material...
For everybody inquiring about Metropolis Pt. 2: the only comment I will give
is that we
hope to be able to incorporate it, but if we do, it will definately be
different from the version we wrote with Derek as we want to have a fresh
start with Jordan....
This is all I will comment on it for quite a while, so spread the word.......

Is there any reason why you wouldn't just use WinAmp to write the output of
the file to .wav format? Or is there a sampling question that I'm not aware
of (I'm a virgin at sound files in terms of the technical stuff, so bear
with me, please).

To those keyboard gurus on the jam, I need some recommendations. I'm
setting up a digital audio workstation and need a midi controller. I'll be
using a software synth (Bitheadz or Seer Systems I think), and a software
sequencer (likely Cubase), so it won't need to be a full blown midi
workstation, just a controller. I do want a good action (semi-weighted I
think), velocity sensitive, aftertouch, etc. I really know very little
about these things (I'm a guitarist =P), so any input would be appreciated.
The one guy I know into keys recommended a Korg X5, any opinions on that?
I'd hope I can get something decent for under a grand.
Thanks much,
Biz

I've just been too lazy to go and download the latest version of Winamp with
the decoding feature. :) But, then, I've also heard that it's decoding
ability isn't a clean as a second party program, either. *shrugs*
Either/Or probably work fine.
>The one guy I know into keys recommended a Korg X5, any opinions on that?
>I'd hope I can get something decent for under a grand.
X5's are pretty good, but they don't make the boards anymore as far as I
know. They make N5's which I think are spendy ($1000 or so) and they are
loaded with samples... Don't expect anything with weighted keys for under
$1000 tho. Don't even expect one for under $2000. hehehe. Every Korg I've
ever played though is velocity sensitive, though, so you should be fine
there. I never recommend a person just getting into playing keyboards to
buy an expensive one first, though. The consumer model Yamaha PSR series
wouldn't be bad if you're just using one for an input board. They're
velocity sensitive (to a lesser degree than better boards) and can be foud
for between $200 and $500. Not that I would ever want one, but if you're
just getting into it, it's a suggestion to save you some cash up front. :)
Also check out Ebay (http://www.ebay.com) every one in awhile. Some sweet
deals sometimes pop up there on used equipment. Keywords to try are Korg,
Kurzweil, and Alesis.
Good luck!

TORI AMOS will be this week's artist on PBS' "Sessions at West 54th". If you have never seen this show, you should at least check out who will be the featured artist. The show is hosted by T-Heads' David Byrne and is mostly live musical performance with a little bit of interview. Some of the recent featured artists include Bela Fleck & the Flecktones and the Pat Metheny Group. Others who have appear include Phish, Fiona Apple, Gipsy Kings, Daniel Lanois (U2, Peter Gabriel producer, etc). So that kinda gives you the show's directions...You may find something you like: http://www.sessionsatwest54th.com <http://www.sessionsatwest54th.com> I know that many Y'Jammers are also Tori Amos & Flecktones aficionados.
