"HI YTSEJAMMERS!!!!"
(Chorus of "HI LOOOOOOOEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!)
Guess what!!!!
As you can tell from the title of my post, the ol' Loooooeeeee baught
his bad ol' self a brand new geeeeeeeetar! Oh joyous of days. Got me an
Ibanez RG350DX, so now my old cheaper than shit Yamaha 112RGZ can go
into the fuckin' closet where it belongs.
Now I know that there have to be at least three or four of you out there
chugging water at this very moment just so you can piss on my parade by
telling me that my git-box is a hunk of shit compared to your ESP or
Parker or Les Paul or whatever... I got a chance to play a Parker,
several different Jacksons, a couple a' Fenders (Gaaak - felt like a
baseball bat with strings) and I settled for this one cuz it felt nice
and natural, had 24 frets, and the pickups make it sound boss as all
friggin' get out! I think I got a pretty good deal on it - was just over
$400 after tax. Anyways, I'm fairly extatic with it and would recommend
it to anyone looking for they'z very own git-box in that price range.
Only thing I noticed is that upon opening the back over, the designers
have taken minimalist approach to setting up the bridge. (One of my
tensioning springs popped off and I couldn't get the damned thing in
tune) If anyone runs out and buys this geeetar and runs into the same
problem, it'll take you about 30 seconds to figure out how everything
works and tweak it occordingly. simple is good - 'specially for us
jarheads. One ord of advise - lockin nuts eat strings at an alarming
rate, especially if you are inordinately stupid. (Like me occasionally)
Oh well. Just wanted to share that with the entirety of the Ytsejam, and
to let DT know that their prayers have been answered and that they can
finally give ol' Jonny P the boot, cuz I'm right here to fill his shoes.
Well, maybe not just yet, but dammit, I'm practising. ;)
Keep fighting the good fight!

112kbps [shudder]... at least encode at 128.. (256 is optimum but makes
for significantly larger mpegs).. but no less that 128!!
i use Windac v1.41 to rip to .wav and Mpeg 3 Layer Producer to encode to
mp3..

wav is pretty close to 20 times the size of an .mp3..
a 5 minute mp3 at 128kbps compression is about 5megs.. a wav the same
length is pretty close to 50 megs..

You can usually find a long list of CD coupons at the following
URL...
http://www.esmarts.com/music/music_coupons.html
The only problem is that they haven't added any new coupons in a
while, and a lot of the ones listed for CDnow and Music Boulevard are
expired. Still, you may want to keep an eye on that site and see if
they post any new ones in the near future.

Cool! A quote from Sledge Hammer! An absolute classic TV show. It
seemed like I was the only person who actually watched that show when
it was on TV. I'm surprised that anyone else still remembers it.

I recommend The Laser's Edge. I have ordered from them several
times, and I have always been completely satisfied. Their URL is...
http://www.jersey.net/~lasercd/
I believe they have both "Behind" and "Younique" for $12 each (plus a
small fee for shipping). "Younique" isn't listed in their catalog
yet, but I ordered it from them a few months ago. You can contact
the proprietor, Ken Golden, to confirm availability and price. You
can reach him via the phone number or the e-mail address listed on
the web site.
-Paul
P.S. I highly recommend "Younique". I would rate it as one of the
top two albums of last year (along with Chroma Key), and there were a
TON of great albums released last year. "Behind" is very good too,
but I think "Younique" is even better.

For mp3 encoding, there's nothing like Xing CODECs, which include
AudioCatalyst which can do super bit-rate conversions like 256 and
greater, Music Match Jukebox also uses the Xing CODEC... which is FAST...
for decoding... I use this utility available at mp3.com called mp3 decode,
it's small and FAST... and does a really good job... dunno which CODEC it
uses... but it can batch a ton of mp3s...

If Met2 (if it's on the next album) is redone to fully incorporate Jordan, we will have 2 different versions. Hey Mike, is there any way in the future of having the Derek version available in any form, just so we can know what it sounded like? How about it be on the next Christmas CD? That would rule. Ofcourse, we would compare the two versions like we do everything else, but since it is going to be so different, it is almost 2 different songs with a few common themes. A sequel to a sequel. How about it in MP3 format? Okay, I'm getting greedy, but I'm really curious now what the original sounds like. Hopefully the next album is a double CD, but that's wishful thinking. It sounds like DT is trying to go back to their roots (the incorporation of Jordan coupled with the return of the I&W-era engineer) with a mix of LTE (spontaneity of compositions, Jordan again). The lack of Shirley at this point leads me to believe that DT wants to be completely in charge, although they were satisfied with him in previous works. I can't wait for the next album. Hopefully, that Strom album-cover artist gives the album justice (I liked OIALT cover, but FII cover looked like a cover for matchbox 20 or something along those lines). While I'm still rambling, my favorite LTE2 song so far is Another Dimension. The keys rule on that one. Death Lord

Ryan Roehrich <ryanscott@mindless.com> wrote:
> I love concept albums and Operation:Mindcrime is one of my all time > favorites...
Well, since you mention concept albums and O:M, I thought I might as well review a concept album that I recently picked up.
Saga - Generation 13
Saga has been around a long time, but they still seem to be a bit unknown. Back in the late 70's/early 80's they were making music that sounded quite a bit like early Dream Theater. Actually, they were kind of doing their own version of Yes back then, similar to Marillion doing their version of Genesis. A very keyboard oriented band, you might guess that Kevin Moore was influenced by this band's early work.
Well, they've been through several phases since then, some good, some not as good, but in 1998, they released their version of the classic concept album. It's called Generation 13, and will remind you of many progressive rock bands, including Pink Floyd, Spock's Beard, Savatage and especially Queensryche. Obviously, someone in the band heard Queensryche's Operation:Mindcrime, and was inspired to do their own concept album. The band has said that the recording was put together as single piece, and the 25 "songs" should be thought of as parts of the whole. The re-occuring Generation 13 theme is very reminicent of Queensryche's "Suite Sister Mary". This may be a distraction for some Queensryche fans, but after repeated listens, the recording starts to become more distinctive.
For fans of early Saga, there's hardly any of their coordinated keyboard/guitar solos. Actually there's hardly any solos at all. The focus of the recording is more about creating a dramatic storyline. Unfortunately, the storyline itself is a little obscure and hard to follow. It's loosely based on the decline of American society, and the prospects for Generation X (With the X replaced by 13 - the approximate number generations since the founding of the U.S.).
For fans of progressive rock and concept albums, this is a recording that must be checked out. It's a little hard to get into, and it's hard to say if this should be recommended for purchase or not. The major online cd stores have sound samples for anyone that is interested.
Be careful about other Saga recordings, but if you're interested, Saga/Worlds Apart is another one that should be checked out. At times (like on the song "Conversations"), it almost sounds like Moore, Petrucci and Portnoy are playing. (But don't forget that this is a 1982 release, and it's mellow, short and dated. A couple of the songs are way too 80's.)

To all you guys out there in Iron Maiden land. Time to crawl out of your holes! I got this email from a good friend of mine today in the radio industry. I checked out where she got it from, and she said CONCRETE MARKETING...I checked out their website and this is not on it yet, but I am almost 100% positive that this is completely legitimate! Check it out...
--------------------- According to sources close to the band, IRON MAIDEN are truly unhappy with singer Blaze Bayley's work as a lead singer. After a recent show in Buenos Aires, guitarist Janick Gers told friends: "I can't stand it anymore!" South American sources state that Blaze used to go in one van and the rest of the band (Steve Harris, Dave Murray, Nicko McBrain and Janick) would travel in another van. They practically never talked to him. Sources say
the band has contacted BRUCE DICKINSON to discuss a possible reunion and a world tour. Before that, the managers were trying a contact with singer Doug White (ex-RAINBOW) for a possible audition. One thing you can be sure: 1999 will be the 20th anniversary of the official "birth" of Maiden and we understand that Blaze Bayley won't be there for the celebration. In fact, the recent South-American tour might have been the last tour of Bayley as the lead singer of Iron Maiden. In related news, Beyond The Maiden - The Best Of PAUL DI'ANNO is a 2-CD, 30-track compilation that features new studio and live versions of his material, including four classic Maiden songs: 'Wrathchild', 'Children Of The Damned', 'Phantom Of The Opera' and 'Sanctuary'.

Ok, here's my responce to the Korn thing in general. I've been listening to ALL the 7th string bands (Vai, DT, Fear Factory, Korn, etc.) for a long time. But concerning Korn, I've always been into hardcore metal, and I, unlike these stupid, suburban "pimp metal" kids who just picked up Korn, have been into Korn since the early club metal scene, when they were not famous, and I didn't want that to change, but then, all of a sudden, MTV grabs one of my favorite bands by the balls, and now, people are calling me trendy because I like Korn? If that ever happened with Dream Theater, I don't know what I would do, but well, after a song like "Just Let Me Breathe", I don't think thats a possibility, so I'm happy about that. Yes, I LIKE KORN. Go ahead and preach about how much they suck and how they have no talent. Sure, DT are gods and are musically superior, but i still like Korn for what they were, not what they are now.
Sorry for me getting all defensive, and please don't start a flame war over this, it's just a personal responce.

Developing Progressive Rock band in San Diego looking for a key player. We have a Prodigy drummer who can play all of LTE, Shadow Gallery, DT, Zepplin you name it. Our guitarist has already cut a CD with his old band but they split up. And me the bassist plays a six string and I can play some Levin, Myung but I am more into writing my own stuff. Our influences include Dream Theater, Rush, Shadow Gallery, Led Zepplin. Piano player needs to have their own gear and into prog. Must be able to play classical to. We are leaning towards more of a symphony like sound. Age has to be 15 to 19. Email YtseJamJMB@aol.com if you are interseted and live in San Diego.
