Subject: Derek rumors at the NAMM show
Message-ID: <84b3242e.36ba4fbc@aol.com>
While I was at the NAMM show, someone in the music retail industry I know from
my Musician's Institute days had a little bit of information for me that I was
allowed to pass along. I would have brought it up earlier, but I had to get
permission from this person. I will just say that this person that told me
quite a few things back in the early 90s - all of which came true. So I
consider this rumor worth paying attention to.
Keeping it short, Yngwie Malmsteen is considering Derek Sherinian as his new
keyboardist. If this is true, it could be exactly what BOTH of them need to
expand their playing. I think they could both add something to one another's
style and we could finally get that Yngwie Malmsteen CD that sounds like an
evolution as opposed to a repetition. I don't want to ponder it too heavily
because it is just a rumor. No reason to start an ytsewar (seems inevitable
though) over a rumor.

A clean break from Derek? What was he, some sort of Alien
inexorably attached to the collective visage of Dream Theater
requiring Ripley's intervention? Some sort of leech that needed
to be burned off? Interesting choice of words. :)
Partha's driving anecdote reminded me when a Richland, WA cop
pulled me over for speeding. The radio (all I had) was,
miraculously, playing Rush's Red Barchetta. I had my '81
Mazda GLC floored baby...so I was going, like, 55. I ran
a traffic light (supposedly...I certainly didn't notice one)
and this cop pulled me over. Now, I want you to imagine an
obese person. Now double that. This is the average look of
a Richland police officer (to protect and to consume). This
guy, though, turned out to be a major Rush dork, and when I told
him the situation (he was listening to the same shit in his
patrol car), he let me off with a warning.
Lastly, some actual content...I keep hearing that Jordan toured/
performed with the Dixie Dregs. Are there any recordings of
his sojourn with Morse and Co. floating around someplace? I'm
a big DD fan, but haven't found anything released by them with
Jordan on keys.

Hi!
"Raise the knife -- cut through!"
That's not by John Myung, it sounds more like Mike Portnoy, doesn't it? ;-)
Always thought they should redo the cheesy chorus, but the main riff and
the instumental part in the last half are still great. But who asked me
anyway. And they indeed recorded a demo of Metropolis pt. 2 with Derek.

APSoG is definitely a masterpiece. However, I heard that the next Fates CD is supposedly going to pull a 180 away from APSoG. Hell though..... I'm sure it'll still kick ass.

And don't forget that JM and KJLB together with JP & MP have already worked with Jordan in a DT context! When he did the gig at Foundations Forum and if I remember correctly was offered the spot as a permanent member of DT. To me it looks like they already had decided back then that he would be the perfect keyboard player for DT but since Jordan had to turn the offer down for personal matters, DT had to settle for someone else.
I'm not taking sides in "what keyboard player sux and who don't" but I must confess that I experienced Derek on the Awake Tour and I was impressed with the Jazzy, Bluesy playing he added to DT's sound in contrast to KM's more (IMHO) traditional prog. rock playing. (classical influenced, more straight 'mechanical' playing) ]From what I have heard Jordan seems to have both the 'Classical' and the Jazz rock part well covered so I 'm looking forward to hear what he will contribute to OFB's sound.
(well, back to lurking again...)

I can't believe it, this is not possible. Anyone who has it, listen thn end 30-40 seconds and you'll notice the part I'm talking about! Tell me it's keyboard patch, tell me it's sax but don't tell me it's human vocal! :)

Damn right! It would be So cool if Fates & DT released albums about the same time. Oh, and toured together! I would travel many miles to see multiple shows on a tour like that.

As many have attested, the show kicked much ass. Some questions: 3.Does anyone (Mike P?) know what music they played before the show? I thought it might be LTE2, but sounded kind of mellow compared to the LTE2 tunes they played live. 2. What's up with Jordan's hair? In some pictures he looks almost bald, but it looked like he had plenty of hair at the show. 1. Where in HELL was Mosh? I hope he was having sex with at least two underage girls. That MIGHT justisy missing that show. :)
I think I get the prize for driving the furthest for a LTE show. Seattle to LA and back in 3.5 days. The only thing that made that trip close to tolerable was the music and the company. (Matt Schnoor, The Queen of Prog, and some crazy blind kid)
