Very true! The studio version has many moods and nuances that are lost in
the live enviroment...sure Fw does a great job in trying to recreate
it..but for that song, id have to say the studio version is way better...at
least the "experience" of it...

Hooverphonic is NOT techno... They're a Belgian atmospheric trip-hop kinda
crazy little band, who play REAL intruments (and are able to play them
rather well IMO)... Anyway, it's certainly not my favourite band, but I do
respect them and calling them techno would be too much of a compliment for
techno music:-)

We have a new chat on the schedule. Keyboard Wiz Jordan Rudess will be
joining us on Sunday, February 21st at 3pm eastern/12 noon pacific. Jordan
Rudess is one of the hottest new keyboardists on the progressive music scene
today. It was made official in 1994 when the readers of Keyboard Magazine
voted him best new talent. They made that honor all the more significant by
giving him second place in the best overall keyboardist category right
behind Keith Emerson! Jordan's tastes have proven very diverse as he has
worked with the likes of Vinnie Moore, Jan Hammer, Tony Williams, the Paul
Winter Consort, Rhonda Larson, the Dixie Dregs, Rod Morgenstein, Liquid
Tension Experiment, Annie Haslam, and many more. And just last month he
accepted a gig as the newest member of Dream Theater much to the absolute
delight of DT fans everywhere! Jordan will be discussing this new phase in
his career, the recent LTE gigs and recordings for their next album, as well
as taking questions from the fans. Again, information on joining the chat
can be found at <http://www.artist-shop.com/irc>.

I downloaded some mp3s from mp3.com based on the descriptions of the
band. There were 2 bands so far that caught my attention. I haven't
listened to them too much, basically skimmed the mp3s.
One band was Aura:Basically a prog metal band with vocals in Latin.
Pretty wild, except I've forgotten anything I learned in my one Latin
class 15 years ago. (well I still remember agricola as farmer).
Another was the Franklin-Neumann Project-another prog metalish band.
These guys sounded pretty good also.
Anyone know anymore about these guys or have any other opinions?
I did download a prog metal band that sing in Spanish but haven't gotten
the mp3s home where I have a soundcard... The band is Azazel.

I read in an interview with Derek, on the Keyboard Magazine website,
that he brought in a real Yamaha 7 foot grand piano for use on LITS. I'm
not sure if he used it on AL, tho. And the part late in the song when it
sounds like Mike doing some kind of funky percussion type of thing on
congas or something, real quick, it's actually Derek reaching in and
muting the strings on the grand while he plays the keys. Just a little
FYI. Later --

If you want to hear a good synthesized piano (coming from Jordan's KW 2500),
pick up "Steinway to Heaven", which is Magna Carta's release featuring rock
keyboardists playing classical music. Jordan plays Chopin's "Revolutionary
Etude", and MY GOD HE IS GOOD....
His sound is much better than the REAL pianos on the album (bad production,
etc.). I got this reply from Jordan when I asked him what kind of piano he
used...
<<<<<
Hi David,
<snip>
It is my Kurzweil 2500
actually. That is not a well known fact. I just thought it sounded
great. After listening to the piano recordings on the rest of the album
I'm glad I took that route..

He never would. Not unless someone paints the Kurz[Rot]weil[er]logo
on the front or something.
Incidentally, can some keyboardist tell be if Kurzweils are any good?
The only notable person I've seen using them is Tori Amos
(...Earthquakes and ...Choirgirl...), and I've only ever used Korg.

Anyone out there know anything about burning DVDs? Anyone
have a company or know of a company that can do that stuff?
Can one use a DVD RAM to record a DVD that you can

DVD computer formats like DVD RAM and DVD ROM from
home theater DVD (sorry, don't know what else to call it)?
Just asking, because wouldn't it be cool if we could have

It's guitar time, folks...
1) Is it just me, or was JP's tone 100% better on I&W? Maybe I just
like a more trebly tone. Awake was good in places - that lead on
Scarred was a great tone, but a lot of the live album/vid was...Not
bad, just not as great, y'know?
2) Metallica tone time...On Orion, off MOP, does anyone know how to
get that intro tone, the one that fades in? JP ain't used it yet, but he probably
will...
3) ...But he has used this one. The lead tone from Take Away My
Pins, I've heard that tone from loads of players (check out Andy Timmon's
"Ear X-tacy" disk), but what's doing it? Is it some special sort of reverb or
something? It can't be the amp, 'cos JP uses MESA, Timmons uses Laney,
and Jan Cyrka was using Marshall back them.
And as promised, my threppeny bit on vocal ranges. Down at the local
karaoke, some prat did "Stayin' Alive", and the DJ had a pitch
shifter. This had to be worth all of stlg50 ($2bn at current exchange
rates, folks), and yet it *sounded* like the guy had his balls in
the blender. The point is: with all the studio technology about,
don't you think that, just maybe, the note you hear on the record
isn't necessarily the note the singer sung? Jon Anderson claims that
Yes used some Digitech thing both live and in the studio; and fuck, they
can even get Celine Dion to sing in tune these days.
But you can't beet the real thing, eh?I hear the Bee Gees had
THIRTY octave ranges...

I picked this up yesterday along with a bunch of other things.
I only managed to listen up to the third song. That third one
(can't recall the name) is SO cool, I couldn't get past it.
Every time the damn thing ended, I skipped back to the begininng
of the track and listened again. It starts off with Rod doing
these classily bitchin' fills...press rolls and tom blats in all
the right places. Then Ty and Derek sidle on in and the shit begins
to rule. The 7/8 section and the following outro solo are some
of the things I've always wanted to hear King's X do, but never
have (except maybe Moanjam, now that I think about it).
The first two songs (Standing in Line and Nothing to Say) are
real interesting too, but since I only listened to them once,
I can't really remember what the hell was happening in those two,
except for Ty's weird solo in NtS.
Oh yeah, John Myung plays some kewl stuff too. Doesn't sound like
there's any Chapman Stick on what I've heard though, just bass.
I was also sort of fantasizing that he (JM) would do some vocals
or something, but according to the liners, it's all Ty. Buy it.

It will soon be up on the "other" official lemur voice site (mine)
in the next 2 days. we're working pretty hard in securing a deal here in
north america (one has been secured in europe), and there IS PROGRESS
BEING MADE. They look to have the album out by June or July (last I

If anyone wants to know what channel
it was on, it is called NRK2. Nobody
watches it, but maybe DT made some
new fans yesterday? Who knows, maybe
someone lost their remote and couldn't
change the channels?
Anyway, some airplay is better than no

is that I don't even know what song they
played! The guy that told me about this said
=EFt was something "heavy" though...=20
