Subject: LTE Roxy 2/1/99 video - BAD NEWS
Message-ID: <c5dacdd6.36c7d9be@aol.com>
Last night, I finally listened to my LTE Roxy video through stereo speakers as
opposed to my TV speakers and I have some very disappointing news. While the
TV speakers masked the amount of distortion on the tape (probably due to the
lower bandwidth), the stereo speakers really let the distortion shine. The
distortion is spread across a wide enough frequency range that using EQ just
isn't enough. I've been able to dip out distorted frequencies in the past,
but I'd have to take out too many important frequencies to get rid of the
distortion on this video.
The distortion is also in frequencies low enough to cause damage to stereo
speakers if played at any volume above a whisper. Because I don't seem to
have the means to correct this, I am ammending the LTE Roxy section from my
video. I'm really sorry that I have to do this, but I wouldn't want a bad
audio representation of such an amazing show circulated. I also don't want to
be responsible for damage to the speakers of many a DT fan.
The whole LTE Roxy show was not a loss however. The following tracks were
played at low enough volumes (or I was in a different area of the Roxy) that
distortion wasn't present:
Osmosis - 3:20 (distortion starts when Paradigm Shift begins)
John Petrucci Solo / State of Grace - 7:46
Freedom of Speech (intro) - 1:10
End of Jordan Rudess solo / segue into Universal Mind ending - 6:20
Acid Rain - 7:20
Total - 25:56
The LTE NAMM video and John Petrucci at the Mesa Boogie NAMM booth came out
excellent. The Rudess / Morgenstein show is a quality show as well, so I will
offer the RPM/RMP video in place of the LTE Roxy songs lost. That would mean
the following tape is available for trade by me:
Petrucci at NAMM 1/31/99 - 10 minutes
LTE NAMM 1/31/99 - 51 minutes
RPM/RMP NAMM 1/31/99 - 28 minutes
LTE Roxy 2/1/99 - 26 min
Total Tape time 115 - minutes
I understand if anyone wants to change or cancel a trade made with me because
of the changes to my original offer. I'm truly sorry that I can't deliver
what I initially promised.

A few days back this thang called "Testing For Tension" arrived in my mailbox
from Scott "Punkass" Sturdivant. The first 45 minutes of the show sound like
they were pretty trompin', too bad I missed 'em live.
I found myself singing along immediately with "Another Dimension." As Petrucci
said, one of the guitar riffs matches the syllables. My head began a-noddin',
my voice crankin' out, "a-no-ther-di-men-sionnn, a-no-ther-di-men-sionnn..."
with alternate vocals of "wa-tes-tin-fa-ten-sionnn, wa-tes-tin-fa-ten-
sionnn..." ("we're testing for tension" in D.C.-speak) or alternate vocals of
"der-ring-ni-ber-lun-gennn der-ring-ni-ber-lun-gennn" ("der ring niberlungen"
in German-wannabe).
For those of you who weren't there, at 1:50 of track #1 on the second disc
Portnoy and Levin start going back and forth with the riffage as part of the
intro to their duet. On that night, it all seemed well and good until Portnoy
decided to kick it into overdrive. At 1:57 you can hear Portnoy just floor it.
When that happened, Levin looked out at the crowd with a big grin on his face,
pointing at the whirling Portnoy as if to say, "Get a load of this guy!" Levin
was just blown away, then after a few seconds got up the courage to take on
Portnoy's beats. A hilarious moment that really got the crowd going.
Kevin Madden and I walked into the Theater Of Living Arts around the 9-minute
20-second mark of "Freedom of Speech." "FoS" is track #9 on the first disc,
and you can hear what happened when we walked in if you listen closely to the
cd. I wanted to say hi to the band from the audience, so I devised a plan for
entering with a bang. I took a swig of vodka and held it in my mouth before
going into the theater, and brought along a Zippo lighter. As soon as Kevin
and I were in, I immediately ran up to the front of the stage with the
mouthful of vodka, lit the Zippo, and blasted the band with a big fat
fireball. To date it's my favorite way of announcing my presence. You can hear
the wave of fire that erupted into the air as a sudden rumbling sound around
9:24 on track #9. It was glorious, too bad no one took a picture. Anyway, when
that happened a bunch of people shouted "BAAAFUUUUU!!" and Jordan Rudess
grabbed a microphone and said "HELLO!!" to me. For anyone who ever wants to
get Rudess' attention really fast, let me tell you, fire really does the job.
Collective Soul has a song on the radio now called "Heavy." It's very easy to
sing along to, considering you can switch between its verses and the verses of
"Precious Declaration." You can even sing the "Precious Declaration" guitar
lick during the verses of "Heavy."
Speaking of layered verses, there's this other song around now called "I Am My
Own Worst Enemy" that's a great doppelganger for "Possum Kingdom" by the
Toadies. The drum beat, the chord changes, it's the return of "DOOOOO YOU
WANNA DIIIEEE??" Even the vocals for the chorus of "Possum" will work nicely
if you force them into "Enemy."

Given the recent comments on makin' sweet lurve to DT in halls...This
story amuses some, and bores others.
I sit on our Student Union's council, and we were having an argument
over this LGB proposal to Conference. The proposer was going "Well,
it's disgoooosting [she's from Sunderland, say no more...] that
straight couples can have sex in Halls, but gays kant!". To whit it
was responded by our Services Officer that actually, it's illegal in
Britain to have sex in Halls of Residence at all. There were some
very white faces around that table, I can tell you! So count
yerselves lucky that you can (damnit, I hate breaking the law. Oh
well...Shame. "Me? Simon Dodd? Here, in the Halls of Residence? With
a lovely lady? At two o'clock in the morning? Did no-one consider the
consequences??? BINGO!"). Incidentally, I volunteer to try Lie with
that Sunderland lady...
While I'm here, can anyone tell me anything about a
band called Accept? They had a song called Balls To The Wall, and
sounded like that band AC/DC never quite became...

hehe. i had an odd dream last night. i got into a good orchestra at my all
state camp..and i had some weird dream where all the metal head i met ( who
adored my "insane" collection of DT ( all but WDADU ) ) and i got to perform
with dt , and all of the bassists ( about 4 of us ) just took over and beat up
JM ,but somehow he regained consciousness and blew us apart into pieces with
some laser installed in his eyes. and then the band starts yodeling to 6:00,
and we all shrink up and die, and then turn into vultures and eat the
equipment. but all the guys are like "yeah! lets do that! " i have no idea
what i watched before that...i think it was an old star trek episode. all i
know is i woke up with a nasty hangover from sleeping too long. and i was on a
caffiene buzz all day. so....back to subconsciousness...

Yeah, I'd do alright with her until she started doing that god-awful

lets just hope that there's no pool in the shape of a heart when you're

highly recommend downloading that MP3. Kick ass, if you emjoy their

Amen, brother. You can only go so far before pure shock value gets old.
That's why i listen to the Grease man. (DC radio personality - I believe
his show is broadcast other plces as well...)- the guy is genuinely
funny, and I've never heard him bash DT (although he's never played
them, either...)

wow, i missed that one. I still miss "One to Grow on", where Mr. T tells
kids it's Ok to have a feminine side, as long as you can still beat the
crap out of them.

yeah, Rush's "La Villa Strangiata" still reminds me of Daffy Duck and
Porky working on their assembly line for giving babies to storks...
i think I remember DT doing a jam with some Cosby Kids on "Fat

Myung by telling him "Ibts Obee Kaybee toboo shubutt ubup."

Hmmm...funky album. Not funky good, not funky bad, just funky. It'll probably grow on me.
Two things that rubbed me wrong right off: Is the middle of 'Rock Balls/Destination Unknown' not just a reworking of 'New Mellenium'? Same key patches - everything.
While I'm on the subject of Derek, the beginning of 'Platt Opus' is his piano solo that he used to lead in LitS with. What up with that?
Yeah, I guess you're entitled to plagiarize yourself, but...
Gotta love those Ty Tabor vocal harmonies. Yummie.

Message-ID: <000301be591b$d138c420$5de74382@default>
OK, After reading about Tori Amos
on the Jam I found a page with some
live Tori Amos mp3's and downloaded
a few. BIG MISTAKE!
That little mistake made me buy two
Tori Amos CD's: "Little Earthquakes"
and "From The Choirgirl Hotel".
(OK then, it was no mistake!)
I was really Impressed when playing
"FTCH". I got in on thursday, and I have
been constantly playing it whenever I
have the time. It's brilliant.
That's why I decided to buy "LE". Also
a tip from one of you guys/girls I think...
So I got it today. I havent had that much
time to listen to it, but I have to say that
"FTCH" is my favourite. Although "LE" still
is a great album.=20
This is another great example of how the
YtseJam is ruining me. Not only do I hear
about all those great mp3's that are out there
and spend time and money downloading them,
but you guys make me buy a whole lot of CD's
too! Let me think... hmmm... Yes, it is quite a few:
Explorers Club - Age of Impact
LTE - LTE
Platypus - When Pus Comes To shove
Marillion - Afraid of Sunlight
Marillion - Brave
Chroma Key - Dead air for Radios
Tori Amos - From The Choirgirl Hotel
Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes
And I'll probably buy all of the nr 2's of the
DT project's too.
This is tough on a 16 year old's budget!
Still I haven't bought 1/2 of what's on my
wishlist... I need to get a job!

but two of the best sites (LitS and Dr. Mosh's site) aren't listed. I
don't get it.
