Uh, yeah, just slightly. :) "Dreaming Neon Black" is quite possibly the best
metal album that will be released in 1999. (Yeah, I know we're only in
February) The album is dark, powerful, well-written, intelligent, and
beautifully produced. By this I mean - fans of the Kevin
Shirley/"New-Let's-make-it-sound-like-seperate-people-playing-over-each-othe
r-rather-than-a-band-playing" production style need not apply, since this
was done by one of the TRUE masters, Neil Kernon. You know, "Rage For
Order", "Into The Mirror Black", etc.
Great vocals and lyrics by Warrel Dane, and some of the most underrated
players in metal, including warped guitar geniuses Jeff Loomis and Tim
Calvert.
I'm just a bit of a fan. :)

Ah, that would explain the total lack of crowd noise, occasional live
errata, and other stuff that normally appears on live concert
recordings. I was confused for a bit there, thanks for clearing that
up.
> The SF show kicked complete ass, by the way. :)
Why yes. Yes, it did. I have no idea when (or if?) Ozric Tentacles
will tour again in these parts, but anyone remotely interested in them
should keep an eye out for their next show. It's a completely
incredible experience. :)

A few CD's I picked up recently (or not-so-recently):
SYMPHONY X - The Divine Wings of Tragedy Holy shit - this album rules. I was most impressed by Jeff Russel's vocals, which are very powerful and suit the music very well. I loved the harmonies they worked, especially on Track 3 (sorry, don't have the CD here, so I can't remember the name). Michael Romeo's guitar work was definitely impressive, but I HATE his lead tone - it just doesn't do a thing for me. His rhythm tone rocks very hard. Overall, however, definitely a masterpiece.
SYMPHONY X - Twilight in Olympus Initially I was not impressed after having the previously afforementioned disc, but it has grown on me. I now like it at least as well as TDWoT, especially because the drumming is superior. Romeo's lead tone is a little better here, but the rhythm tone isn't nearly as powerful. Better songs, IMHO, but I like the performance and production on TDWoT better.
SYMPHONY X - The Damnation Game A great disc in its own right, but doesn't quite live up to the other two. Great guitar work, great vocals. The song-writing leaves a little to be desired.
GORDIAN KNOT The best CD I've bought in a while. AMAZING bass and Stick work by all involved, including Malone AND Myung. Also very emotional soloing from Trey Gunn on his "Warr Guitar". Could definitely listen to this one for a week straight and not get tired of it.
THE 3RD AND THE MORTAL - In This Room Very experimental and textural disc, mostly atmospheric songs, without drums, etc. Beautiful acoustic guitar arrangements in many tracks. Great CD - if you like The Gathering, get it (though it is very unsimilar). Outstanding female vocals. Very reminiscent of Tori Amos in the lyrical and vocal senses.
THE GATHERING - Mandylion Another of my favorite recent discs. This German band is somewhat reminiscient of Type O Negative, minus the overly sexual lyrical content and a singer that sings ABOVE the subsonic range of Peter Steele. Beautiful female vocals. Nothing too flashy, just awesome hard rock with slight hints of prog here and there.
ATTENTION DEFICIT Just got this one today - Alex Skolnick (guitars), Tim Alexander (drums), and Michael Manring (basses) do the write-record-mix-master-everything-in-one-week-in-the-studio thing. Second to LTE, my favorite of the bunch. This disc has the best bass work I have heard in a long time. Mostly very experimental, much like BLS, but IMHO, better because the Testament fan in me likes Skolnick much better than Stevens, even though he doesn't do that kick-ass Flamenco shit (donning the asbestos suit as I type). Anyway, very tight drumming and, once again, EXCELLENT bass work.
STRATOVARIUS - Visions Great disc - amazing guitars from Timo #1. Timo #2's vocals are pretty damn good, too, but I like his lower range much better than the upper. Solid drumming. The keyboards pretty much blew me away - gotta love Jens' harpsichord action! The bass gets pretty much lost in the mix (at least on my POS stereo)....
STRATOVARIUS - Episode Another fine SV disc, but Jens' keyboards should've been a wee bit more prominent in the production. More great songs, though not quite as good as Visions. Guitar work again is top notch, and the bass is a little more audible.
STRATOVARIUS - Visions of Europe Great live 2CD set from Athens. Awesome performance, and the solo duel between Timo #1 and Jens is pretty damn cool (and funny). I wish they'd tour the US so I could hear them in person. Were the vox overdubbed (he was a little too on-key the whole time for me to believe it was live, though I don't know about Timo #2's reputation live)?
ANGRA - Holy Land For as much as I used to dislike Andre's vocals, I can at least deal with them now. They are much better in the softer songs than the more metallic ones. Anyway, another great prog-metal band, as we all know. I really enjoyed the slower songs, as well as most of the soloing by <insert lead guitarist's name here - don't have the CD here>. The rhythm guitar tone pretty much blew, though. It should have been much more powerful. Great disc, though.
Well, that pretty much does it (not that anyone cares anyway)...

Man, if that ever happened, Id prolly piss my pants. Though I don't quite get how it would be an exact insult. Actually, Im still waiting for that "surefire plan" to get DT on MTV once again. The one where we all vote for Lie or whatever. That, or recrute one (or more) Ytsejam member(s) to audition for the Real World, as the trendiest, non-thinker in the world, then once they get on the show, play DT and other prog music CONSTANTLY, then wear DT and other prog T shirts. I like that idea a lot. Id watch every fucking episode.
I'd like to nominate Skadz, Mosh, Eckie, Lisa "Jessie" Marie, and KorgX3.

The Contradiction/None compiled CD is probably the best... it captures the heaviness and technical aspects of Meshuggah quite well... Next would be Destroy, Erase, Improve... which is more technical... Chaosphere I feel is insanely technical but lacking in feel...
All super heavy... and just in case there are other Meshuggah fans out there... there's an awesome live version of Sickening on the Death Compilation IV discs...

Heh, Yah. Mosh and I would get in major fights over who's turn it is to wash the crackpipe and Eckie would always be caught sneaking into Skadz' room at night to fulfill his foot tickling fetish. Of course there has to be an antogonist, so we would have to throw Michael Coghlan into the house with us, just so we could all have someone to focus our hatred on. At least until someone ran into Jessie's room and pulled her sheet off of her bed then Andre (the only cool guy EVER on any Real World series, imo) would magically appear and beat the shit out of the usurper.
As far as the NKOTB thing on TRL, I can see the sense of it, but it won't happen. You can sure bet that Brittany Spears will be up there bouncing around instead. Sure, I remember the Drunken Angry Dwarf thing, but was he on the cover of people magazine, although he won? No... I looked for the issue. I think he got some sort of "Honorable Mention" hoax sort of thing buried deep in the magazine somewhere. People just looked at is as if it were a joke, not a raz as the people who voted were actually displaying their contempt that these "50 most beautiful people in the world" are simply passe. Someone will forward the chain mail to TRL and I'm sure and it won't be on that day. They'll just have a Road Rules Marathon on or something. :P

Mike Belvins described Dreaming Neon Black pretty well. I'll just add that Politics of Ecstasy is also a great album, and that both are better (IMO) than the self-titled debut. Of course, their self-titled album was originally just supposed to be demos, not an album.
