I was in the gym today (first time in like two years and I am in PAIN),
and over the stereo they had playing some local rock station. This little
blurb for the station came on, and underneath this testosterone-boosted
guy saying "ROCK One-oh-one" were the first notes of "Surrounded." I
thought it was kind of neat, because nobody except my DT-heads and I even
know they exist. I brought it up to my friend, telling her about how neat
it is to hear them in little contexts like that.

Just thought some of you might know that Dream Theater apparently isn't
unheard of here in New Hampshire.

Basically it talked about the releases of 5YIAL and OIAL. I was wondering =
    why
it didn't include any info on Jordan joining the band...

Cool. You can listen to his show from 5pm - 8pm CST, and then listen
to ours from 10pm-2am EST. WREKage on WREK-FM, the student voice of
Georgia Tech (although I'm not a student :)). Our show is
death/thrash/black metal so I don't get to have too much prog played,
but when I can influence the show (or on rare nights when I take over
for a bit) you'll hear gems like DT's cover of "Damage Inc." with
Barney Greenway -- which became a popular request for a few months --
and Ocean Machine's "Regulator" -- which also became a popular
    request.

There's a chance I'll be able to get my own show or something in the
future -- despite not being a student, the station manager likes me,
and more importantly, I introduced him to Ozric Tentacles :) -- and if
that happens, I'll let everyone know.

The URL is http://cyberbuzz.gatech.edu/wrek/wreknet.shtml; shows are
also archived for one week on the site for later listening.
Atlanta-area folks can tune in fairly easy at 91.1 -- we broadcast at
40,000 watts, and WREKage is the station's most popular single show,
with at least 2,000 listeners on a typical night and perhaps as many
as 10,000. WREKage isn't for the faint of heart; with rare
exceptions (some from me:)) the "lightest" stuff we play is, e.g.,
    Slayer..... :)

Actually, sales have declined by something like 30% since 1990. Most of the "free cash" the labels got in the late '80s / early '90s was from people replacing their LP's with CD's. Now that CD's have to stand pretty much on just new music, they're not maintaining the same profit margins for the labels. Has anybody noticed the astounding number of anthologies and remaster reissues in the past few years? It's a quick cash grab by the labels.

Labels are also scared shitless of mp3, but that's another argument.

    > First of all, I have a theory about one-hit-wonders that I want to > research, right now it's just my feeling from watching the > charts the last > ten years or so. But the follow-ups are seldom as big as the first hit, and are usually propped up by marketing. The problem is that labels don't develop bands anymore - the attitude that used to prevail. You've gone from people who were at least somewhat interested in music running the labels - in the '80s - to people that are just selling soap - the '90s - so they just trade brands when the sales drop. There's no long term thought process anymore. Yes, labels do occasionally build a powerhouse - much as I dislike saying it, Maria Carey sells a lot fo product, and will probably be around for a while - but does anybody think Sugar Ray will be around in five years? Will any of the "new swing bands" outlast the current fad? (Well, Brian Setzer maybe, but he's been doing it for years...)

(Rap argument deleted, but both sides make valid points.)

    > I know that all of you have probably heard of the > "new" band "The > Quiet Room" they just recently signed with Magna Carta.

Nope. Metal Blade, who are at least marginally better at promotion. :)

They're also somewhat of a rarity in the prog metal world right now, in that they're both SONG-oriented and GUITAR-oriented. (They have a keyboard player AND two guitarists - all of whom are excellent) I'd highly recommend "Intro

They're also great guys. We played (and drank) with them at the first Powermad, and we're playing with them - and Iced Earth and Jag Panzer - in Philadelphia on the 27th. Go see this tour if you live in the Midwest/Northeast US, 'cause they're ALL good.

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy has been around for several years now, but they haven't been nearly as big as they are now. Ever since the movie "Swingers" was released, the band has had a cult following (they really ARE good), and they've only become very big in the past year or so. I think that they, like Dream Theater, will always have a big following among certain groups.

You had to know you'd be burned for this:

    >from Joshua Rasiel <jrasi@bigfoot.com>: > from numb monotony. Rap is monotonous, unimaginative, uncreative, > uninspiring. It's totally fad-based

Far be it from me to defend the talent-less media that is commonly referred to as rap music, but I have to rebut this. I've stood up in college music appreciation classes and denounced rap having no musical quality, and ever since my wannabe days of high school when I did listen to the junk to be cool, I've never been convinced that rap is more than a way to dupe the public and get rich. BUT... no more can we denounce the _entire_ genra of rap than can anyone say all prog music is "fast for the sake of being fast" (isn't that on the DT FAQ somewhere?). Likewise, what counts as rap? Does Korn count? Shooties Groove? Beasty Boys? Limp Biskit? Or are we limited to Wu-tang and Snoop Dogg? What about the House of Pain guy, now in Everlast?

Agreed: most rap albums sell becuase they are anthems of coolness and are good background music for toking up or banging your gf. But you can't disregard everything that is rhythm and lyric based. What annoys the hell out of me is that a lot of post-gangster rap (some of which is actually cool) don't want to conform to _any_ sort of standard that requires talent. A lot of rap music doesn't rhyme anymore, and most of it doesn't even have a beat. They take their sampled background, chop off about quarter second from the end and then loop it. I guess they thing it sounds cool to have an entire song that's out of sync.

    >From: "Brian Hayden" <hayd0029@tc.umn.edu> >This is what I think: there's not many true one-hit >wonders any more, more like one-album wonders.

Research on this would be interesting. I, for one, have never purchased a single in my life, but I'd be willing to bet that's true for most people here. We aren't fans of songs, we're fans of bands. However, most people aren't like that. One-hit-wonders abound today in pop music as much as ever, if not more. Remember Humm, the Pres. of the USA, Tripping Daisy, or current ones like Eve 6 and the Flys? These bands will have one big single, they'll sell a lot of records, and then go away.

    >faster side and Ben Folds Five on the 'college-oriented' side who have one >top forty single and are never heard from again. Just to defend BFF, they're probably done now (Brick killed them, that lowsy balled), but they had more than one popular radio song. But that's another discussion, and I'm probably the only one who likes them. They're the only band I know of with a lead singer/pianist. Sort of a cool hook, IMHO.

Like I've said before a billion times, music is cyclic. And we've entered an era where music is more of a hobby than an anthem for people to express themselves. Just listen to what you enjoy, the public will soon follow.
