just getting going, I have been lurking on the Jam here for a while, We have
recieved help along the way from many fellow jammers and I picked a few out

I just returned from a trip to London today. I went last night and saw
Threshold and Landmarq at the London Astoria 2 club. Quite a cool show, great
club, decent sized crowd, really good bands. So if anybody saw a guy with
flyers last night. that was me, I did meet one guy who said he belonged to the
jam.

Yeah, actually. The band wanted to go more straight prog rock, and Dwight
wanted to do stuff more in the direction of what they were doing. They're
choosing a hard road - AFAIK, they haven't replaced him yet - but I have NO
idea why Dwight hasn't popped up anywhere yet. He's one of the better live
singers I've ever heard, and I actually like his voice in the studio, too -
although many don't...
Of course, time was Chris would have answered this. Ah, the old days.
BTW, any 'Jammers going to Iced Earth / Jag Panzer / The Quiet Room in
Philly on Saturday? Get there early - unless you're Bafu - and see Division,
too. :) I do mean early, BTW, since it's a matinee that starts at 4PM. All
ages, too.

I'm surprised to have not seen any comments about Pitchblende's performance
at Jaxx the other night. Am I the ONLY 'jammer that attended?

According to my Berklee Alumni directory, Mike and Derek both received
Bachelor of Music degrees from Berklee- Derek in '84 and Mike in '86. It
lists JP and JM, but only says "'86" next to their names- the last year they
attended. Weird- Mike graduated but the Johns didn't?

I found this post interesting, because I was just thinking about this Sunday:
I was listening to the original demo of A Change Of Seasons, and after James
(the auditioning vocalist) finishes his "oh oh oh oh oh oh oh" part, Mike and
John , and probably John too, are going off on their instruments, and I hear
Kevin Moore play two notes. They are the same as two James sung at the end,
but they were also two from the intro to A Fortune In Lies, so that's why I
figure they played it on that show. In fact, I was just watching that video,
and you know when the audience sings harmony at the end of Learning to Live?
Well if I remember correctly, Mike Portnoy told the AOL message boards that
was the first time a crowd had done that. And with that in mind, I watched
James mention something to John P. and thot I bet he's commenting on the
audience singing, and John seems to urge James, and he picks up his mic and
points it out at the crowd to take advantage of the situation.

I think that from every decade, there's going to be a handful of bands
that survive the ages forever more (this is just a rundown of a few
bands that pop into mind)-
60's- Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, The Doors
70's- Led Zeppelin, The Who, Black Sabbath, YES, Aerosmith
80's- Van Halen, uh, REM, and, um... ya know, the 80's were pretty
desolate.
90's- Pearl Jam, Nirvana, RHCP, Metallica, Nine Inch Nails, Collective
Soul, 311. Despite popular opinion, the 90's has been a pretty good
time for music.

I think the bands I mentioned from the 90's will be remembered in 20
years for their influence, etc. It's not immediatley obvious right now,
but you'll hear them spoken in the same context as The Who when
youngsters like me grow up and are old fogies. Just you wait. And moo
right back at ya!

Mike received an honorary PhD in pornographic literature from Berklee School
of Music after posing naked with his drumset in a rare "King of the Drum
Queens" issue of Modern Drummer. This is thus far a unique honor bestowed
from the esteemed institution, although the opportunity is open far all who
choose to expose their true talents. Due to the magnamosity of Mr.
Portnoy's endowments, the centerfold containing his photograph had to be
extended to six pages completely folded out.
Although I haven't seen the issue myself, I've heard rumours that the "third
arm" theory regarding Mike's spectacular drumming ability cannot be
disproven from the evidence found therein. Apparently, Mike's "secret
weapon" also makes mares and other effeminate barnyard animals swoon.
As far as the Johns' educational status is concerned, although the
opportunity has presented itself, they seem to both find the method of
obtaining an educatrional decree to be a bit too extreme and plan to
acheieve their aspirations through more conventional means.

Personally, I like the JPMP4 better, but mainly cause I cant stand guitars with pick guards like the JEM has, nor non-direct mount PU's, especially with Floyd Rose style vibratos. Though I do like the floral inlay on the Jem.

YES!!!!! god i thought i was the only one who absolutely HATES the monkey grip! i mean i LOVE the JEM BSB .. it rocks.. the only thing which actually prevents me from buying one is the godamn monkey grip.

You're right, he *didn't* sound human on LAtM. He sounded like a barking dog or some kind of animal with a severe throat rash.

Well, you can find him in Shadow Gallery's "Tyranny", but he's not really singing backup there, he just sings a few lines of a song. Hmm.... Actually, I did mention them after Powermad after I picked up Entropia. I think the big problem is, untill recently, their disks were only released in Japan, so not many have a hold of them yet. They also aren't the easiest band to get into. I just got my copy of "One Hour..." last week and I'm still trying to get into it. "Entropia" is a must have, tho...
BTW, why did you wait until now to mention them, Madden? Usually if you are nutz for a band u will go nutz about them on here. You're losing it.... :^)

Okay, as of today I have answered every email I have received on this video I offered up. If you sent me an email and never got a response, send me another email otherwise you won't get a response. I am pretty sure however that I missed no one.
I have one extra addition as to what I am looking to trade for. BOXING MATCHES on video. I'm only interested if you have a master copy on SP. I prefer the post show conference and pre-show talk up as well, but it isn't as necessary as the ACTUAL fight. I prefer heavyweight matches. Especially any Tyson, Holyfield, Bowe, Moorer, Foreman, Lewis, or even Holmes fights. I'm sure I will get minimal response on this, but its worth a try. Some nameless people lost or broke my two Holyfield v. Tyson fights so both of these are extremely welcome.
The Lines in the Sand website now has LTE added to the tourography (http://dreamtheater.mit.edu/), so I would suggest all those that have already received my video to register and put their names up on the site for the NAMM and Roxy shows if they want to trade. This will allow the "source" for this video to widen tremendously.
And of note to those still interested in getting a copy from me; I will be returning the VCRs I borrowed shortly and therefore will become very discriminating on what I am willing to trade for. Copying 3 videos at a time is what allowed me to do so many trades in the first place.
If anyone that has the video wants to comment (review), go right ahead. It may help others decide if they want it for themselves.

OK, since you asked :) First of all, it's great quality. the sound is great - if you've ever videotaped loud live music you can tell Calvin went through the work he did to make this tape sound good. The video is also good - I was expecting much worse considering shows normally aren't exactly well-lit. The only complaint i can think of is the apparent obsession with JP - the camera always tends to drift back to him, even when he's doing something boring or even nothing at all. It's obviously not ALL him, but it's clearly in his favor. Which is good, to a point, but I personally would rather watch Tony (i just wanna know how the hell a Stick is played) or Mike (nuff said :). I was also hoping to see what Jordan looks like on stage. And I did, of course, but just a few snippets before heading back to JP. But alas, i've made the one small complaint longer than the praise. I love this tape. Get it. And if all you do (or would do like me) at DT shows is watch JP, then it's even better :) The service was also very good - I got the package when he said I would. I'll trade with Calvin in the future. And thus ends my comments. Good job, Calvin. The work you put into making this an enjoyable tape for those of us who didn't get to go to the show is appreciated. Well, in his defense, I must say I've been quite nuts about this band Fear Factory for quite awhile, but I waited until I got the new album "Obsolete" before I decided to rave about these badasses on the jam. This album is the best thrash/death/speed/bluegrass album for me since Rust in Peace. And it's actually melodic too. Pain of Salvation rocks ass as well, btw.
I've never heard a death metal band write a song that could make a grown man cry, but "Timelessness" is just pure emotion. The whole album is a HUGE step forward from Demanufacture, which is still a pretty badass CD in itself. Some parts of the album even lean to the mildly progressive side too, much like And Justice for all by that "other" band :)
Along with FF, some other new CDs I've got recently are by Seven Dust, Gamma Ray (insanity and genius), Saigon Kick (the lizard), Fates Warning (Perfect Symmetry), Metallica (Garage Inc.).
Of all of them, I'd have to say the FF is the only CD that stands out from the pack. The Metallica stuff is cool, especially the punkier tunes they do, they seem to give punk music a needed kick in the ass whenever they play it. The Fates is exactly what I expected from pre-APSOG fates. Cool, but a tad bland. APSOG rocked my world, though. Saigon kick? Saigon kick back to the CD store, sounds like an extreme-copy, only this time there's no Nuno. The Gamma Ray CD reminds me of Helloween, good german speed metal. Just like Strato or Hammerfall (though I truthfully like strato the best of the 4 bands). And Sevendust is pretty cool, but the CD needs to grow on me. I'm sure it probably will.
Overall ratings from my opinion out of 5 stars:
