In response to the German jammer who asked "And who the heck are Collective
    Soul and 311??"
Collective Soul is a popular rock band, kind of like Matchbox 20. They can
be on the harder edge, or they can be soft. In fact, their new song is very
heavy and pretty cool (for a popular act) Collective Soul has a cool story
behind them. The guitarist (his name I cannot remember) and the singer (who
I think are brothers) produced an album in which the guitarist did the
guitar and bass work and used a drum machine for the drums, sent in a demo
or were asked for a demo; and they were given a bunch of musicians to form a
band. Their first hit "Shine" was a cool song. Their follow up album was
(I think) the top selling album (pop) of 1996. (correct me if I am wrong)
Anyway, I think their stuff is pretty cool.
311 is one of my favorite bands. I have everything that they have ever
done. Personally, I am a fan of bands that tastefully add rap to their
music. For example, Rage Against the Machine and 311. They are funky hard
edge rap and fantastic vocals. Almost all the members play instruments (one
sings and uses a turntable) and are very talented. Their last album was a
mix of lighter music with some light rap. In fact, this album has some
progressive tendencies. Its called Transistor. Big-time 311 fans were not
appreciative of this album, but I am.
In response to the guy who posted that the 90's were a good time for music..
I couldn't disagree more!! I think that the 90's were a very sad time for
music. I watched music go into the dumpster. All of the music produced
(within reason) was poor and untalented. Nirvana stinks!! It was the
return of a maximum of 3 chords in a song. No time changes (which is okay
if the song is good) cheezy lyrics (which have no point) and bass lines
straight out of early Van Halen. Just my opinion. However, I do see a
definate light at the end of tunnel. I see 80's stuff coming back (good
80's stuff) and more fun music. People don't seem to admit that they love
the stuff from the 80's, but they do. People are bored with the 90's. I
HOPE HIP-HOP DIES!!! Die eMpTV! DIE!!

Yep, I was there - that crazy day that it was raining sideways and half the
light show blew out during GC's set. The audience was singing along to that
part, absolutely - or at least MY section was. :)

A funny thing happened at that show. My date and I were walking up to the

OK- here's my bit for the month. . .

I was listening to Fates Warning's A Pleasant Shade of Grey, and
I noticed that many times, I couldn't hear an overpowering keyboard
sound, even though I knew damn well that it played a huge part in the
overall sound and themes of the album. So I thought to myself about the
old DT stuff I had listened to so many times, and I realized that a lot
of Kevin's stuff is like that. It seems to me that he is not only a
superb musician, but also a very concious listener- he knows he doesn't
have to blow through scales at 200 bpm in order to play good music. I
know I said before that I thought Derek was only good at taking other's
parts and playing them. I think he plays very well, and does do a great
job of playing other parts with a little of his own influence added.
But his style differs greatly from that of Kev. . .just different- not
better or worse by any means. So I have to wonder- I know Jordan is an
excellent songwriter, just as Kevin was, but he also is an exceptional
player, just like Derek was. So I have to think- what a find Jordan
was- the best of both worlds. Hell yeah- this shit IS going to be
insane. Not to mention the fact that Mr. Portnoy is going to be doing
his thing all over this bastard. When is it coming out again? Damn; I
sure as hell can't wait for it.

         Tom

P.S.- Don't worry about my mention (or lack thereof) of John or John. I
think we all just take for granted that anything with their names
attached is going to be amazing, no matter what it is. What a lineup!

I was reading in the paper today that Courtney Love was named best female
guitarist, thus receiving an award named after some guitar innovator (Gibson,
I think) . I forget who the best male guitarist was, (Kenny Wayne Sheppard
maybe?) but give me a break. If there is any Hole song any semiprofessional
guitar-player on this list couldn't duplicate while intoxicated (Mike?
Chris?), I'll eat my, uh, hat.

And what's the with the big spam posts on the jam lately?

Alright, here are a couple more CD's I got in the last few days (damn, I buy
    a lot of 'em)...

    NIGHTWISH - 'Angels Fall First'
What a CD to start off with. Damn - great songwriting, great
everything. Only bad parts of the disc are Tuomas' vocals (not exactly what
one would consider ON-KEY) and the production is decent, but not nearly as
stellar as 'Oceanborn' (see below). Tarja, as we all know, is a goddess
with an amazing voice which lends itself very well to Tuomas' dark lyrics.
This disc is a little more subdued than 'Oceanborn', layering Emmpu's
acoustic guitars with flutes and things (I THINK them flutes 'er
synthesized, but they sound pretty damn good to me). Great disc - highly
recommended by yours truly.... (4 of 5 stars)

    NIGHTWISH - 'Oceanborn'
This is one of the best CDs I have EVER bought. They finally got
their shit together and let Tarja sing all the time. This album is much
heavier and more gothic-influenced than AFF, and is by far its superior.
The production is excellent, and again the songwriting is superb. Nothing
is overdone (no obligatory wanking), and nothing is missing. Simply a great
CD. I would say Nightwish is a cross between a more subdued Stratovarius
and Type O Negative (hello, read the lyrics :)), but with an amazing
vocalist (not to say Peter Steele isn't - he's one of my favorites). Also,
they have a new member on this disc, bassist Sami (it tends to annoy me that
they don't list their last names, but I'm sure I'll get over it).

MICHAEL MANRING - 'The Book of Flame', 'Thonk', and 'Towards the Center of
    the Night'
Michael Manring is the man (no pun intended). I was first turned on
to him by 'Attention Deficit', which I reviewed last time. A fellow jammer
e-mailed me and said I should pick up 'Thonk' (thanks Jon!). I couldn't
find it, but I found 'The Book of Flame', his most recent release. The
other two are out of print, but I found them used at the Mill/University Zia
(for the Tempeans among us). All I have to say is 'WOW'. The man is
amazing - he does things with them basses I didn't think were possible.
Also, he helped invent the 'hyperbass' - a bizarre creation which you can
see on his website, http://www.manthing.com - which apparantly can change
tunings on the fly (using it, he changes tunings over 100 times in the song
'The Enormous Room', from 'Thonk', which is 4 minutes long). Oh, and by the
way, he doesn't even tune his 10-string bass (same strings as a 5-stringer,
with each string having a thinner double) in octaves, or even in the same
intervals (i.e. low to high: BB F#B BC# C#F# F#C#) Anyway, this dude is a
genius, and is untouchable as far as I'm concerned, and I again thank Jon
    Parmet for the info... :)

    hey jammers,

I know Korn isn't prog but right now they are the closest link to metal on
MTV. We got to try to get metal back on MTV instead of this weak Rap and boy
band shit. Making metal the more dominant role on MTV would give DT a better
chance at getting on MTV. This is just an idea. Just take a few seconds to
vote for Korn on TRL. Do it by email not by phone...it's a lot easier.

Arrrggghhh...I don't even bother to call the radio station, because nine
times out of ten I think they're playing a tape while all the kids are in
school. It's frustrating when you even have some of the lyrics, and you
    still can't get the song.

Good guess by Mr. Patek. The Aquarium Rescue Unit sounded great (clips at
cdnow), but almost a little too flashy for the tune I heard. Oh well, I'll
keep listening, and maybe I'll get lucky.

Orgy didn't quite fit the bill either. They sounded kinda goth/industrial
and I was looking for pop/electronica with a straightfoward singer.

And Johnny Lang is too young to sound like the blues guy.

One more while I'm at it: 'I can't keep changing just because...you think I
should' and '...In the quicksand'. Lots of loud guitar, kinda sounds like
the Canadian band that did 'Superman's Dead'. Anyone?

    Hey Jammers ....

Just had to throw my two cents in on this one. I think a couple musician=
    s
that were missed are Ozzy and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Ozzy's been releasing
great music since "Blizzard of Ozz" and selling out arenas consistently
ever since. His Ozzfest tour is one of the highest grossing tours each
year. And, as for SRV, I know he's been dead for close to nine years, bu=
    t
his music is still selling, enough for Sony to cash in by offering
remastered CDs and a second Greatest Hits CD. Supposedly, a box set is i=
    n
the works, but it's being delayed time after time.

Honourable mentions include Sepultura (recording since '85) and Pantera
(even though their 80s music sucks, their 90s stuff is great).

Yeah, these MIME posts are getting out of hand. I too have mailed Skadz
about it with a suggestion/question. My thought was the mailinglist
software may have some filter capabilities to look for specific words in
the incoming letter such as "Quoted Printable" which is what causes the
MIME post. If you read some of the MIME posts, it says it's encoded using
quoted printable. So if the software detects that phrase in the header or
body (my guess is it's not a commonly used phrase) then bounce that letter
back to the sender with a message saying "don't post in MIME" or whatever.

Yeah, I can set up filters on my end for that too, however being that I'm
in digest mode, it doesn't do me (and really anyone else in digest mode)
any good. My choice is to what, delete any incoming mail (therefore an
entire digest) if it contains that phrase? So no, that won't work. I
know, I can change to ACK mode but it is inconvenient (for me) to get 50+
pieces of mail per day when it's really the sender's responsibility to read
the rules and don't post in MIME.

The thing is there are many who don't realize they are posting in MIME, I
doubt they do it intentionally to piss people off. So notifying them
somehow would help. I have been e-mailing people if they post in MIME
letting them know that they are, that it's not allowed, etc. It helps
cause generally they turn MIME off, but then another new person posts the
next day and it's the same thing. That's why it seems some kind of filter
would help more, if it's actually available.

These posts are beyond just annoying. My e-mail program (Eudora 4.0) for
some reason can't handle MIME (if it's in quoted printable) and the rest of
the digest after the offending post is just one big, unreadable paragraph.
So I do hope that this gets solved somehow. If anyone has any comment
about this, please let me know cause I'm curious if this could even work.
Or if there's something I can do on my end to deal with it for now. Thanks!

    Take care, all..

    Irene

    >> Saigon kick? Saigon kick back to the CD store, sounds like an
    >What??? No, no, no, no no. Extreme copy? That's gotta be the single worst

hehehe. I agree completely. Saigon Kick may be in the same category as
Extreme for that ONE album, but that is all. They're style and writing
seems to change with every album. IMO, the best Saigon Kick album isn't
even an SK album, tho. Jason Bieler's solo album called "Jason: Houston, We
Have A Problem" is probably my 2nd favorite album of '98 (after Ocean
Machine). It's so damn diverse that I can't rub my tummy at it. People who
enjoy this album should have a WIDE taste in music. There's everything from
a retro-Beetles song to a couple of techno tracks, a couple of dance type
tracks, a new age track... Wacky but wonderful stuff. It's like the
ultimate rock meets techno album on a par with Ocean Machine, yet on a
completely different golf course... Don't expect any shredding guitars or
keyboard wankery. This album is layered as hell, thick enough to eat with a
    collostamy bag or something.

Anyway, SK fans oughtta love it, and people who don't think SK's more than
an Extreme copy would be surprised at this one... keep in mind that Jason
basically writes all of SK's music, and this was just an album he released
with stuff he felt deviated too far from the course of the actual band. (I
don't think so.) So... anyone who's got $15 or so to spend and is willing
to take a chance on a new album oughtta run out and pick this one up.

"I offer people a way to make $1,000 profit on a $1,295 order in one of the most lucrative and appealing industries out there, right from the comfort of their home in a program where active marketers average two to three orders a week. How difficult is that?!" -- Ted MacNeille

Call Right Now if you're ready to start living your dreams instead of just hoping things will change. If the line is busy, keep trying. You have nothing to lose and you'll be glad you did!
