well, some news about Saigon Kick here...they released a video (kind of
bootleg) for sale...
also there are like 30 new songs of jason Bieler, Saigon Kick and
SuperTransAtlantic (the new Jason's band) on mp3 format for free....they
are available at www.saigonkick.com just click on the goatlord link (Jason
is the goatlord by the way) and then click on the mpeg gallery or something
like that, is not very hard to find....
the songs I liked the most are the ones from SuperTransAtlantic, I didnt
like as much the new saigon Kick songs but I havent heard them much....some
of the Jason's new stuff is rpetty good but some of them sound like disco
(yep, 70's disco, not techno)

Sorry I don't fully remember how it went... Anyway it was a 12 hour routine divided in four three-hour parts, two of which were scales/modes and jamming (the last part). According to his own words Vai was (is?) very strict about training for a certain predetermined period of time, not a minute less. Someone with more information or a better memory feel free to fill in. I will if I happen to find the magazine.

Yeah, I remember the storm. as i recall there was still some thunder and lightning just as the intro to Metropolis had started. that show was amazing. it was great to see the boys running around on a big stage where they had some room.

Jordan is a great player, and he writes hella music. however Jordan doesn't have a clue when NOT to play. Not counting "State of Grace", the LTE CD has a sum total of about 8 measures where he's not playing anything, and roughly 70% of his playing is 32nd notes. There's one good melody (in his solo in Kindred spirits), and it's a GREAT one, but the rest of his playing on the CD is predominantly wankery. (And what's with the damn xylophone sound?) Especially in contrast to JP's playing. really inspired stuff, here. Even when he's blazing away, everything he plays is tasteful and appropriate.
Not to mention something that really REALLY bugged me about the show I saw in Philly--as Jordan and John played "State of Grace," JP was constantly looking over at Jordan at the keyboard, trying to get some sense of ensemble, or even get ANY connection at all to him. Jordan kept his head down and eyes fixed on the keyboard at all times. Literally. He didn't look up ONCE. Sure, "State of Grace" is a duet, but the role Jordan plays in that context is that of ACCOMPANIST. JP might as well have been playing along with a tape. In an art song like that (the first few measures are, after all, taken from Schubert's "Wiegenlied"), the melody and the accompaniment are supposed to be equal, but that the accompaniment is there to support the singer (or, in this case, guitar). Jordan was neither supportive nor emotive, thus giving JP nothing to work with.
Did anyone else notice that?

My dead hamster could play any Hole "riff" out there. Courtney Love makes me sick, as do most of the polls out there. I was looking at a list of Grammy nominees in this Sundays calendar section of the LA Times and almost puked. All I saw was "Lauryn Hill" this, "Natalie Imbruglia" that, with a good dose of the latest Shawn Mullins info. I wonder if the people behind the Grammy's realize how narrow minded they are being when they choose the nominees. I remember some award show a few years back when some of the artists for Best Hard Rock act were The Offspring, Green Day, and Neil Young. As for KoRn, I'd rather hear New Kids on the Block. I'll request KoRn when Courtney Love can outshred said dead hamster.

I was a bit surprised to see the comment 'decent sized crowd' 'cos there was a maximum of about 150 people there in a venue that holds considerably more. - and most of them were on the guest list! It was a typically poor turnout for a prog/prog-metal outfit in london.
Landmarq played some excellent neo-prog which I very much enjoyed, but I was mega-disappointed with Threshold. The new stuff from Clone was crunchy and very heavy, but the new singer's voice seem to deteriorate towards the end of the set. They didn't play anything from 'Extinct Instinct' and they played at a volume suitable for a much larger venue - I wish I'd had my earplugs with me.
I won't be in a hurry to see them again.

This one smells funny.
When Arash mantioned it, I almost missed it (passing over the post as yet another plug for ET, the boy wonder prog band). OK, so it's a real thing. The question is, WHY? DT has what, 4 full length studio albums? All of the tribute albums I've ever heard of have been dedicated to bands with a much fuller body of work, usually amassed over a longer period of time. DT has no such track record, obviously.
This makes me think back to the Working Man tribute. Rush got a bad rap, because they were worried about the possibility of a bunch of lesser-known bands using Rush's music as a platform to gain notoriety. The reason, I think, they realized that wasn't the issue probably had to do with the fact that a lot of the contributors, including FW, some of DT, Billy Sheehan, etc. had all established names for themselves throughout years in the music industry.
Now we have the DT tribute. I haven't heard any ET, but from what I know, every review seems to call them I&W clones, or something along those lines. I certainly know that they haven't established themselves in any way, nor have they made a name for themselves in any way outside of comparisons to DT. So it seems fair to wonder: how legit IS this tribute? As much as we ALL love DT, have they really amassed enough of a corpus of work for the market to demand a tribute album? And really, what IS the motivation for the bands getting involved?
I, for one, won't be purchasing any DT tribute at this point. I think the band would be justified in being suspicious of exactly what the Working Man tribute was accused of: a bunch of unknown hacks using a more popular band's music to gain some sort of name for themselves. The differences between the two projects are obvious: while some overlap exists, in a lot of ways, bands like FW and Dt have carved out a musical niche that clearly aims for many listeners outside of Rush's fan base. Is the same true of ET? From all that I've heard (Arash's rantings, other reviews on the 'jam, reviews at the Laser's Edge, etc.), ET doesn't have that distinction.
This whole thing smells rotten.
