i'd have to disagree.. i think mp3's are the best thing that could
possibly happen to an artist.. if more and more people use electronic
means to obtain music the than the artist will have more control over
profits.. companies like liquid audio, www.liquidaudio.com , are making
a TINY profit off of album sales in comparison to the big names who suck
the artist dry.. technically, yes, the artist loses your 2 dollars off
of the 15 dollar album you just download if you don't buy it, but i
personally like having CD's so i go buy the CD if i like it. and if
artists realize that the world wide web is a wonderful tool to use to
their advantage and the demise of corporate megapowers that i think the
world will be a much happier place. the internet allows the artist to
control sales and publicity..that's all there is to it..how can that be
    a bad thing.

You'd think that after five years this moron would have learned how to
    unsubscribe by now.

And for my money, Pearl Jam is a quality band, with the album Ten being in
my top ten favorites. You won't find a more diehard fan of DT around, but
I really enjoy listening to PJ because of Vedder's passion. If you don't
hear it in songs such as Black or Garden, you are really missing out. They
did help establish the 90's grunge scene, and so did Nirvana, but
comparisons of the two bands is useless, cuz they aren't even in the same
ballpark. This is all an opinion thing, but I think proger who look down
upon PJ could find quite a bit of enjoyment through this album. I'll
support anyone that doesn't like Nirvana :)

    Well, I gotta get moving.

I completely disagree with the Marilyn Manson comparison. Reznor is not a
singer who has no recourse but to offend; Manson has no musical quality
besides vauge Ziggy Stardust rip-offs and offensive song-titles and lyrics,
but on the other hand Reznor keeps an extremely low profile. Quoting the
song "Closer" out of context reeks of John Engler and in fact just seems to
display the prejudice and stereotyping I referenced in my original post...
Manson and Reznor deserve no analogies -- the two are completely opposite in
    everything but record label.

Perhaps if I were to quote "Young Lust" out of context it would have the
same effect as your quotion "Closer." Or maybe "Space-Dye Vest"?

"Found a new girl, think we can make it, as long as she stays on the page."
That gives utterly the wrong impression regarding the meaning of the song,
just as your mangling of (in my opinion, one of the more interesting
musically songs) Nine Inch Nails lyrics. With that small quote, the song
seems not to be a morose explanation of loss but rather, perhaps, a
    celebration of pornography.

Ok. I know MP tried to post a few things to the jam, but AOL sent it w/out anything in the message. I remember MP trying a few times to put something out to the jam - and then just getting tired of the attemp - hence the quote above.

    Hey people:

I sent money to a guy on this list who lives in Finland (I won't mention names, for his sake, and he can make it known if he so wishes - a lot of people want this CD and I don't want to swamp the man) and he marched down to the local record store and bought both Nightwish albums and sent them to me here in the US. As I said, he shall remain anonymous, but he is THE MAN. Oh, and BTW, if you didn't know yet, 'Oceanborn' is currently available in Finland only. You can also direct order from Spinefarm Records, Nightwish's label, which is in Finland. One problem - they ONLY take US cash via snail mail. I figured it was less risky to trust someone on this list. Maybe poor logic on my part, but at least I could use a money order... :)

If you get a good pair, you can use them for hours without wax buildup and your ears being uncomfortable. The really cool thing about these headphones are that you can actually hear what you are playing (just at reasonable level) it kind of echos and gives a reverb effect (very cool) However, I would not recommend these for studio use. A simple set of cheap earplugs should work. If you have smaller ear canals, just use a pair of scissors and cut them in half (lengthwise) and smoosh them down (thats what happens anyway) my father used to do that for me when we went to those Allman Bros. concerts when I was knee-high to a grasshopper. *** There you go... Well, then listen to some real xylophone ;-). I'm just now listening to "Interview" by Gentle Giant, and though they didn't use it on *this* album, they had quite a lot xylophone on their earlier work. And saxophone. And trumpets. And every-other-instrument-you-can-imagine. Shit, forget what I wrote, I just noticed that they *did* use xylophone on this album. Heavily! Sigh...

Crazy band. Usually I *hate* xylophones, violins, or trumpets in *rock* and usually I don't listen to renaissance fugues, medieval songs, or any other of the really weird styles these guys incorporated into their music, but ask me about my 70s-prog-rock-favorite and I'd say Gentle Giant.

People always look funny when I say that...

Anyway, maybe this explains why I don't know 311 or Collective Soul. ;-)

BTW, if I remember correctly Gentle Giant lead vocalist Derek Shulman was president of Atco Records when DT got signed. And Jordan Rudess once said he liked Gentle Giant, too, thus closing the circle.

Sorry if this was totally pointless, but I got the flu, too. Must be the season...

    Hi Jammers ...

In my opinion Kenny Wayne Shepherd is a great guitarist contrary to what'= s been said on the last couple jams. He's no SRV, but who the hell is? Vaughan is one of the greatest blues guitarist of the last twenty or thir= ty or even fifty years. There's no one around that can touch SRV's passion and skill on the guitar. KWS is just a young'un. He's only 21. Do you think Vaughan or B.B. King or Buddy Guy were as good at that age as they were in their prime? Hell no. They weren't! Give the kid a chance to develop before you rip him to shreds.

There's been a marked improvement in his playing. On "Ledbetter Heights,= " he sounds like an SRV clone, but his follow-up CD, "Trouble is ..." is a hell of a lot better. Interesting riffs, technically better, even better songwriting. I have a "Blue on Black" single with a nine and a half minu= te instrumental version of "Voodoo Chile." The kid (god I feel old and I'm only 23) is awesome on this track and is just gonna get better and better.

If you'd rather the real thing, then get SRV. >

Not improvising blues is almost as bad as not improvising jazz. In my opinion I think all rock players should learn to improvise as well...but that's another point. KWS and Johnny Lang are both way overrated. Yes they are talented...however they got a lot of press and publicity primarily because of their age. There are tons and tons of 40 year old guys in bar bands who can play just as good as if not better than KWS and Johnny Lang.

I'm from Mass and I'm quite familiar with Mike Welch. In fact, he went to my school and I know him personally (although not too well...he's kind of strange). Mike is definitely extremely talented and he is certainly not souless. Again however, he was a victim because he received so much publicity when he was just a young kid playing with the Blues Brothers. However, Mike is a hard worker and he's now branching out into different styles and he's trying to expand his repetoire. His 15 minutes of fame have certainly passed since he was 14 years old...

In my opinion, Derek Trucks is by far the best of these blues-based guitar prodigies that seem to pop up every other week. He's 19 and his initial claim to fame was the fact that he's related to Butch Trucks of the Allman Brothers. However, Derek has develoepd into a total original player with a great sound. He plays everything from standard steel-guitar slide blues to wild fusion that would make Scott Henderson proud. He has a great tone and combines southern rock with jazz and blues stylings. His latest recording, Out of the Madness, is brilliant. Anybody into great hardblues/jazz should pick it up.

311's album "Transistor" is my favorite of all of their albums. As for the Pearl Jam/Nirvana thing. Pearl Jam is one of the most non-influential over-hyped self centered bands of the nineties. Ten was great. I loved it and still love it. I laughed when they decided to try to take on the Ticket(bas)master thing. How did they ever think that they would win? Good effort, but lets face it.. they gave up. All of their albums now for one suck, they are deprived of diversity, boring and are all one-hit wonders. Its very sad because they were all about what the whole "plaid" and grundge thing was all about in the beginning. They were the beginning of the end. Very sad to see their state. However, I am not sad about Nirvana.. Rot in HELL! They ruined young kids' vision of what music should be. Instead of trying to play something by Dokken, they tried to (and succeeded very quickly) at playing Nirvana's shit. And shit is what it was. Crappy music and lyrics = crappy music. I am happy to see the music getting better again... bands like: Creed, Matchbox 20, NIN, Days of the new etc... are at least making music good again. >< One more while I'm at it: 'I can't keep changing just because...you think I should' and '...In the quicksand'. Lots of loud guitar, kinda sounds like the Canadian band that did 'Superman's Dead'. Anyone? ><

Don't know those lyrics, but if it's anyhelp, "Superman..." is by Our Lady Peace.

    >< There's one good melody (in his solo in Kindred spirits), and it's a GREAT one, but the rest of his playing on the CD is predominantly wankery. ><

That was the point of LTE. They were gonna be writing songs, it would just be instrumental DT.

    >< I was looking at a list of Grammy nominees in this Sundays calendar section of the LA Times and almost puked. All I saw was "Lauryn Hill" this, "Natalie Imbruglia" that... ><

I've never heard the music of Lauryn Hill, so I won't judge her based on the fact that she's "popular," but I've heard Natalie Imbruglia's album, and it is garbage. Music for money's sake. I guarantee this will be the last we ever hear of her annoyance.

    >< The question is, WHY? DT has what, 4 full length studio albums? All of the tribute albums I've ever heard of have been dedicated to bands with a much fuller body of work, usually amassed over a longer period of time. DT has no such track record ><

None of that matters. It could be 1990 w/DT's only release being WDADU. If a band inspires and influences you that immensley, why *not* tribute them?

    >< I, for one, won't be purchasing any DT tribute at this point. I think the band would be justified in being suspicious of exactly what the Working Man tribute was accused of: a bunch of unknown hacks using a more popular band's music to gain some sort of name for themselves. ><

Again, none of that matters. It's being released on some small-time label, even smaller than Magna Carta. It won't sell much. It won't get any type of push. Empty Tremor and whoever else is on the album knows this. They might get a few new fans out of it. But if their reasoning was to gain fans and money, there are more popular bands that they could tribute and bigger labels to distribute. Tribute and *dis*tribute... why do they have nothing to do with each other?

    >< I'd like to ask what kit used Portnoy on LTE recording sessions. I think it wasn't his hige Tama. ><

Well he thanks Tama in it. But aomething interesting to note...on the picture on the back, he has a Zildjian, so maybe he went out and actually bought some drum accessories.

    >< And for my money, Pearl Jam is a quality band ><

I, for one, agree. None of their albums strike me as being especially good, but plenty of their songs strike me as being especially good. I don't care for Vedder's vocals, but he makes up for it with emotion. And he writes some great songs. And the drummer and lead guitarist can be real good at times. Songs like Black, Better Man, I Got Id and Yellow Ledbetter are far above average, but they also have some awful, horrible songs, so it kind of evens things out. but they're one of the few bands that I think people mistake for being popular rather than good. a small percentage of bands are both of those. pj is one of them.
