..Not that it has anything to do with this post. (You guessed it: NDTC)

Amanda Rosenblum said: >Sometimes I would come home from an awful day, feeling like a >miserable waste of space, and somehow listening to Trent scream, >agonize, yell, sob, and whatever else he does, made me feel like I >wasn't alone. Just knowing that someone out there felt the same way as >I do made me feel like maybe there was a point to my life. > I love DT's lyrics, but in a different way. When I listen to their >songs, I get an alternate point of view, and new insight and perspective >into some of the events of my life

It's amazing how much songs affects our feelings both musically and lyrically. There are also events in our lives that make a certain song "special" to us. I think that when lyrics make us happy, sad or anything it's because we feel somekind of connection with them and/or somehow feel related to the writer. IMO music can make us feel even stronger emotions than lyrics but maybe it's just me. Sometimes we get the best of both worlds, great music AND lyrics. Althought music can make me feel a certain emotion I usually choose an album to fit my mood and not one to change it. When I'm down and want to listen to depressive lyrics I play i.e. Depeche Mode and for depressive music In the Woods (has anyone gave this band a chance?). For both I listen to Chroma Key, even if it has some "positive vibes". When feeling especially happy I might put on Spock's Beard or Yes. If I want music to make feel my heart explodes I listen to echolyn's Shades (a beautiful song lyrically and musically) or Leonard Cohen (b/c of the aforementioned "events in our lives"). When I'm o.k. (most of the time, that is) I listen to virtually anything from Scofield to Satyricon. Yeah. I know no-one gives a shit :) Still felt like sharing it with you.

CyberDuke wrote: >>I don't know what you guys are >>doing... but if I can afford cds,.most of you can. > >No we can't!

I need a car but I can't afford it. But I need it! Man, I need it really bad! Oh, wait, I'll steal it! Woohoo, great idea, yes?

    >What if someone if starving to death BUT also chooses to listen music?

Isn't this example a bit far out?

    >I don't say that we should consciously try to rip off our fave bands, >but do you think ppl with way bigger problem on their heads care about >these topics? >Heck, there are many ppl in my country that would beat me to death if >they see I'm wasting time for "MP3s thread chats". You think they CARE >about if bands get their 20$ or not at all? C'mon, they don't care AT >ALL. All they care is laying their hands on the music they want. End of >story! No nightwares, no conscience-striken, nothing at all!

This doesn't really give an impression of poor, poor Macedonian students starving to death while struggling with problems bigger than life itself. It gives an impression of greedy and selfish buggers. I'm not trying to insult you but that's what it sounds like.

    >We can't make generalisation based on our lifes.

Umm... like... you just did, didn't you?

    >>I was so disgusted when some dude responded to this with >>"I can't afford it. > >????????? Disgusted????? Can't it be that he was speaking the truth? Do >you know him personally? Do you know his incomes? Even he if lies, some >others are really in that kind of situation, which makes this >"disgusted" statement pretty not-supported-with-facts.

So what if he was speaking the truth? If he can't afford it he doesn't buy it and doesn't listen to it. Money's not an excuse. That might sound cruel but hey, life blows more than a fullsize windband. And just for the record, my financial situation is exactly the same as your.

    >The Grunge thing was quite big and brought great fresh blood: > >Soundgarden (pioneers)

I've heard only a few of their songs but I want to hear more before I rush into any conclusions. Perhaps you'd like to recommend something from these guys. ..or perhaps after my post you wouldn't...

This is good to know. When I heard you rave about Opeth as somekind of black metal/prog crossover I was a bit dissapointed with My Arms, Your Hearse. The dissapointment didn't last long as it's still a great disc, but I expected something proggier. Guess I'm bound to get Orchid and Morningrise next.

    > the bands that don't make it. There are no album production costs. Just a > little server space and an e-commerce program. How hard is that? Bands I think some people on this list (I'm not pointing any fingers) have little understanding of how the recording industry works. So here's two important facts to remember : 1)Creating an album costs money. Lots of it. The actual creation of the physical cd represents virtually NONE of the cost of the cd. Studio time, producers, extra musicians, etc -- these add up quickly. Now musicians who already are rich can own their own studios, produce their own albums (they usually are experienced enough by this point to do it), etc. However, very few musicians are rich -- the ONLY reason their albums are created is because a record company decided to invest in them. The internet can not eliminate these costs. 2)Again, few musicians are rich -- most are middle class or below. When you make mp3's of their studio albums, you are depriving them of their livelyhood. Now, mp3's are certainly good for some things. I own piles of bootleg dt mp3s, and this isn't costing the band money because they are not planning to release these. It is unethical, however, to steal from these people. You are shooting yourself in the foot -- if the musicians cannot make money, they are going to go into another line of work. Music is about many things, but is it right to steal one of the few ways a working musician can subsist. They have to eat too, you know.

Serious folks, this kind of debate can spawn entire mailing lists and web sites... we don't really need to do it here on ytsejam... the fact of the matter is... if you have a computer powerful enough in most cases, to play mp3s... you CAN afford to buy CD's... and being in a country where the actually media is hard to get is no excuse, if you're sitting here, on the internet, arguing... you can also head over to an online mail ordering store and order the CD...

I may have to address this challenge. The whole world isn't the U.S. Sure there's a "global economy", but there are things that hinder that. There's still places in the world where anything of value is STOLEN by the local mailman/customs agents. There's also the problem of currency exchange rates, and shipping/insurance costs (if they'll ship there at all.) And how do you pay? Even though it seems that Visa will give a credit card to anyone, they don't give out cards to every war-torn corner of the world. And forget cash or checks, that doesn't make it past the mailman either. This can dramatically raise the relative price of a disc. Would you purchase a disc if it cost the equivalent of $200 U.S. currency?

    On the issue of copies:

    > Explain that to all the struggling prog artists trying to make a > living off of a CD that sells 500 copies.

I think you'd have to call that a hobby, not a living... If you're only selling 500 copies, you'd be LUCKY if it got duped a thousand times and you got that much exposure.

As for this whole issue of copying, I still think it's a non-issue. Taping has been around forever, and it hasn't hurt the music industry. The majority of music listeners purchase the real deal. They pick-up the official disc, with all the nice artwork, and everyone gets their money. The average person doesn't have the time, know-how or interest to run around trying to get a "copy".

The real issue around copying is when some rouge manufacturer in Bumphuc, Cambodia decides to run off 500,000 copies of a recording, and duplicates the original packaging. That's a real problem. But the record companies and their legal armies are usually on top of that pretty quick.

I was listening to OIALT disc one today, and is it just me, or does that version of JLMB just kick ass! I prefer it over the FII version, simply because JP rips me a new asshole with his sound. I hope JP incorporates that crunch in DT99. I've mentioned it before, but Derek really shines on OIALT also. I really like his distorted guitar sounds. I noticed that in the chat transcript of Jordan's recent chat, that he is unfamiliar with some of DT's lesser-known things. I wonder how long it will take for him to know it (if ever at all). I wonder if Derek had even heard some of the early stuff such as the Majesty demos for example. I don't think it's a necessity for a new member to know all of the early demo material or whatever, but I would think it would help to be more integrated into the band and its fanbase. Maybe we'll get an update on DT99 when the guys take a break this coming month for a birth (Portnoy's ?). About the tribute thing: I really see nothing bad about it. If you don't like the idea for whatever reason, just don't get it. I probably won't get it either, but it would be interesting to hear. Not only that, but it is supposed to have some originals also, so it's kind of like "If you like DT, you may like ______." I was surprised to see so much digests in my inbox. I was thinking MP said something about the new album, which prompted responses. Oh well. Just MP3 and NIN talk.
