    Supwitchall -

A little NDTC here, my wife has been looking for an out of print CD by Dennis
DeYoung called "Desert Moon" for a LONG time. I think it was released in 1984
or something. If anyone has an original CD they want to get rid of, or even
make a CDR copy of for me, I would GLADLY purchase it. Or we can work out a
trade, although I don't have the capability to dub vids or burn CD's.

    Private e-mail please.

    Thanx in advance..... Matt T.

Considering how every one is always posting their DT moments of the
    day: here's mine.

Our dorms were a show for live bands tonight, and there was a band
performing called Six West. They're a funk/ska ish type band but they have
some really good musicians playing with them, and they're definitely one of
the better live acts around here. Anyway, me and this other drummer went up
to talk to their drummer after the show (I had been impressed with his
playing and his setup) and we somehow got to mentioning drumming idols. THe
person I was with started ranting about Bozzio and got a word in that I was
a Portnoy fan. Six West's drummer then turned to me and said "oh you would
get along great with our percussionist." So they called him over (he had
been playing timbales and some hand percussion) and it turned out the guy
was a really big DT fan. I updated him on the news, and he was really
surprised to hear that Derek was gone, and that Jordan was their new
keyboardist. We then talked for a while about Portnoy, DT, drumline, etc.
Blah: the influence is spreading, this guy teaches a drumline at a
highschool. That's all for today. blah.

    All of them. =)

Seriously though...... it depends on what you're into.

Go with -A Pleasant Shade of Gray- (my personal favorite) if you like
deep, thoughtful, kinda Pink Floyd-ish type stuff (emphasis on KINDA....
it's heavier, and much different.... but there are similarities).

If you want something of a moderate prog-metal, get either -Perfect
Symmetry- or -Parallels- (probably the former is better)

If you're into prog with an 80's metal sound (w/ high vocals) get -No
    Exit-.

If you want to get a sampling of their stuff, get their best of disc,
    -Chasing Time-.

Or if you want something that's kinda commercial sounding (w/some nice
    vocal melodies) get -Inside Out-.

They also have a great double live CD (very cheap too, for a 2CD set)
    called -Still Life-.

It's kind of weird this NIN thread. My wife recently "discovered" NIN and has purchased (much to my chagrin) several of their CD's, which I have been forced to endure. In fact, I had the chance to litsen to them all in a row. Now, for starters, I already had a major dislike for his "music"( c'mon, let's face it NIN is Trent). And after listening to 4-5 NIN CD's, I came to the realization, I REALLY DON'T LIKE NIN! IMHO, of course. It all sounded the same. Literally! I couldn't differentiate from one song to another. Admittedly, some of the more guitar heavy stuff was bearable, but there is only so much screaming, drum machined, keyboard crap a person can take! If you like them, fine. I'm not going to change your opinion about that. I just needed to vent a little about him due to the torture I've had to endure recently!! : )

Now, for the MP3 thread, I don't know a whole lot about MP3's because I'm using a very old Mac and I don't have the software to listen to them. I'm coming more from a musician/bootleg collector standpoint. We all know that eventually the corporate execs at the labels are going to milk the Internet to distribute their bands music (already happening, to some degrees). The whole "pirating of music" topic has been on-going since recording began (or at least when alternate methods of music distribution became available other than LP's {God I miss them!}) Between bootlegging shows, to dubbing a friends copy of a new CD, bands have been getting shit out of money for years, *by the fans*. Of course, some execs shit bands, too, but I guess my point is, it's going to happen eventually, I just hope that it doesn't turn into something that will cause some bands to stop playing (an extreme, but still a possibility). Or, maybe I don't know what I'm talking about (happens sometimes, I know!)

!!!*DT CONTENT*!!!- I don't know what the policy is about this, but I would love to get my hands on copies of the past Xmas albums. E-mail privately if you have them and would like to part with them!! We can work out some kind of arrangement!! Also, anyone that could explain MP3 or could direct me somewhere to learn more about them, LMK! I'm new to the comp, and like I said, I'm using an older model!! : (

    Thanks, Chris Martin cmartin@blueridge.net

Funny how that is... one of my friends who is a huge prog/power metal fan is a drumline instructor and "makes" his students listen to stuff like Dream Theater, Fates Warning, Terry Bozzio... and this guy teaches more than one high school and has numerous private students... so there is still hope the younger generation will be exposed to the good sheeit...

    Hello Jammers,

A query for a friend of mine; being quite an accomplished guitarist in the rock discipline side of things, he is now looking at broadening his styles into the flamenco/latin area.

Having little idea where to start, he asks me to ask here; can any guitarists here on the jam reccommend some artists to check out in the flamenco/latin style guitar that would still satisfy his thirst for virtuosity?

FYI, his major influences come from Vai and Petrucci (yeah, what else?).... any help would be muchly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Luke.

I download lots of stuff from bogie's site, it's great. Of course, DT songs are nothing if not long. So you can imagine my annoyance every time a network error occurs, which is often. I believe that there is someway to continue the download, using the regular file saving method, but i'm not sure how.

The reason I think that it's possible, though, is that yesterday, I was getting CiaW and Showdown, and both times, there was a network error, and both times, when I went to get the file again, it AUTOMATICALLY just downloaded the final chunk, and attached it! Normally, of course, it just asks if you want the file replaced and you have to say "yes" and sit there, watching the final file size ebb up, byte by byte, while all your friends go out for valentines day and you go cry into a pillow.

Anyway, I have been unable to replicate this file apend thing. anybody help me?

Well, if you have the latest versions of Netscape or Internet Explorer, it's SUPPOSED to resume HTTP transfers for you. I don't know how much I really trust this, however. I have, though, found that Netscape is usually good about it - even when I tried to save the file under a different name. If you notice, when it resumes, it reports a different total file size upon downloading. It scared me once - I figured it would just tag it onto a dialog box with some of the data already downloaded - but it didn't.

If you REALLY want to be sure that you get resumed file transfers, use GetRight (if you have a PC. I don't know if there is a version for Mac OS). I have found that in terms of customizability and reporting things correctly, GetRight is definitely the way to go. If you're a modem user, it's invaluable as well, because you can set a transfer to go at night and have GetRight disconnect you at a certain time. That way if you don't finish the transfer, you can have it go the next night as well!

OK, I'm sick of this thread, too. First of all, I didn't know all of the lyrics. Brian, thanks for sending your analysis, even though I don't quite agree. At worst, I think the "narrator" is pretty pathetic, judging by the lyrics in the verses. Co-dependent? Maybe. But you wouldn't BELIEVE the ignorant e-mail I got from another 'jammer who thought the whole song was about rape. Netiquette prevents me from reposting his message. But I might just post my retort to him.

    >The much-debated lines. This doesn't make me think of love, especially "my whole >existence is flawed." Aha! You got it! Here's part of my aforementioned retort -

    >I think the line "You get me closer to God" was meant very sincerely, and >was actually a shockingly profound and sweet sentiment, buried in the >middle of a rather raunchy song. But YOU <<not you, Brian - the other guy>> say that this is how >a rapist feels while performing rape. I don't know what to tell you, man. > You got problems . . .

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it. This shit is getting silly.

Now . . . thanks to those of you who responded to my question about Doug Pinnick's "Poundhound". I ordered it today. As far as Ty Tabor's solo project, IMO it's really good, but not quite as good as most KX albums. It tends to be a lot softer, and quite a bit of acoustic stuff in there. I really love some of the songs, but I'm afraid some of you proggers wouldn't like it.

    OK, I'm done. Buh-bye!

    Larry

p.s. I wiped off the wall - thanks for reminding me, Ice!
