That's great news that you guys are getting into the studio. About time! :o) Can't wait for it to get released.

Covering the song "Beat It"?! Hmmm... Mosh has been shipping crack overseas again. ;o) How does he get that past customs?

Who wants to play flamingo guitar anyways?

Check out Paco, as someone else suggested. All of his albums are more or less "safe" buys. Paco De Lucia is thr father of the modern incarnation of Flamenco guitar. People like Ottmar Leibert (who is talented but writes some pieces that are too cliche, even in a genre that often specifically TRIES to be liche) and Jesse Cook (who may arguably not be using true flamenco technique.... some of his licks sound way too precisely picked, like DiMeola) who are readily available and HUGE successes (they can be found at just about ANY music store) wouldn't be playing the way they do if it weren't for Paco. Paco challenged the theory that Flamenco and Spanish Gypsy music necessarily had to follow traditions (using the same scales, chords, and always the same vocal style... the old man with throat cancer sound) Many still cling to these concepts, and create great music... some, like the Gypsy Kings, maintain the key elements of the tradition, but branch out into technology a bit. Narada has at least one good Flamenco sampler disc, available at all Best Buy and Tower type locations. I recommend this type of thing as a great starting point, because then you hear multiple artists, and can pursue each in turn if you choose. That way, you don't get stuck listening to ONLY Paco. When I first got into jazz, I only listened to Charlie Parker, because he was the only one I knew I liked. Once accustomed to the gravel throat sound of the vocals in Flamenco, and the fact that the lyrics are almost uniformly in Spanish (that's a no brainer) check out bands like the Gypsy Kings. Friday Night in San Francisco is a great disc.. but it's more of the same for your friend. He'll probably focus on DiMeola (who is probably JP's main technical influence). Totally worth owning, especially the gold remaster version that came out a few years back, but it's really only a mild glimpse into Flamenco. ___

Calvin has scored big time with his LTE video. He sent me a copy, just to have me in future trading debt (I have more or less stopped trading because I owe Carlo several videos, and have managed to fuck that whole thing up for like 2 or 3 years now, because I wasn't in possession of the boots I was trading (a buddy who I lost contact with was gonna dub them for me) and I still owe Mape some stuff, though that will be done with this weekend most likely. Calvin is a ridiculously fast trader. And this LTE video is a godsend for JP fans. 1). The chunk of JP playing at the Mesa booth has some really cool licks to steal, and showcases an amp that I STILL need to identify. Great clean and brutal distortion. Nothing like having Petrucci play-test an amp for you dry, and on a Valley Arts guitar no less! And you have to give Calvin some credit for standing around there with a camcorder silently, while Petrucci played. I'd feel awefully uncomfortable if I didn't at least say hi, and get a chance to get his OK on it. A worthwhile chunk of JP footage. 2). LTE, NAMM: You can hear things clear enough, you can see Chapman Stick in action, by one of its most acclaimed players (though it's more about groove than technique for Tony Levin) and you get the awesome closeups that Cal provides on all the JP solos. A couple great shots during Rudess solos too. This video is MADE for guitarists. There may be another boot vid of this show floating around, according to Calvin... if that's the case, I want em both. :) Important note... at the end of the show, when Cal is walking around with his camera, taking closeups of all the rack gear so he can identify it later (a man after my own heart) it is none other than RON THAL who comes up to the camera and talks about "waiting till 2:30 in the morning to see John Petrucci, who we all love." Kinda neat cameo. 3). RMP: This is made for KEYBOARDISTS. Great drumming, but of immense significance is that you hear the keys really well, and you SEE the keys really well. There's a big monitor screen in between Rudess and Morgenstein, and during all the solos, the screen has an overhead shot of the keys, and Cal has a direct shot at the screen. That's GOTTA be useful to anyone who wants to steal Rudess licks I noticed (as a buddy of mine pointed out) that Rudess seems to be playing all of his solos one handed... none of the hand over hand kind of stuff some of the other popular keyboard heros do. Pretty wild to see him go at it like that! I gotta start collecting keyboardist boots (Jens... wanna send me some tapes? :) 4). LTE Roxy: This would have been an AWESOME show to get in entirety. What is included is impressive. Aside from some people (who shall remain nameless) being annoying (getting in the way and making noise) this one is killer too.

Great video quality on all of the boots, and great sound quality (only fuckups are twice when the camera unfocused at parts that aren't important) and sound problems that are related to the sound guy, not to Calvin. This one's a winner. Getchaself a copy ASAP ____

MP3s... I'm done with this debate. To clarify

A). I am not anti MP3. They're a great tool to hear the sound of a band B). I AM anti whole album MP3, because no one has made a reasonable case toward the fact that people who obtain these will still buy the album. Isaac would. But in general, most of you wouldn't and you know it. C). Whatever you choose to do, how much money it costs you is not relevant to the fact that when you take these in lieu of the album itself, you are robbing the musician of his livelihood. Whether or not you think your contribution to this crime is important has no bearing on the ethics. If the artist deserves your $2 for the album, he should get it. If you appreciate the album, you can't justify taking it without paying, unless the artist gives it to you. Do it if you will, but know that it's wrong.

In a message dated 99-02-26 12:32:32 EST, you write:

<< My first Fates CD was chasing time, the compilation. I listened to it a lot, and I liked it enough to get apsog. It's one of the best comp CD's I've ever seen, because for every song, the liner notes tell you who wrote it, what a band member thinks of it, what album it came off of, when that album came out and what each album looks like, and even band photos for each album. It's the info I've always wanted on a greatist hits CD, and it's kickass. Unfortunately, I also decided from that CD that it wouldn't be worth it to buy any of the original albums, because I got the hunch that in any given time period, the band just emulated another band of that period. First IM, then QR, then DT, to make it inaccurately simple. But aside from that, I do like the music, and I might one of these days go get parallels or inside out. APSOG was certainly original, btw. >>

OUCH!!! Joshua, while I agree that Chasing Time is a great place to start listening to Fates, and while I also agree that APSOG is a masterpiece, I just don't think that any other Fates "emulates" anyone. Influenced by? Yeah... I'll go with that, and I'll even agree as to being influenced by the bands you listed. But, "emulates"... I just don't see it. I'm afraid that you're missing out on a lot of amazing music by not getting their back collection. Please reconsider! :-)

I was wondering if anyone knew if there are any programs that you can compose music with where you actually place notes of selected instruments. I had a program like this on my Tandy 1000 RLX years ago, but my parents sold that anyway, and it wasn't windows-compatible anyway. I made a lot of songs that were pretty good considering I was in 7th grade at the time. If anyone knows another program that I can try this again with, I'd be grateful. Also, does anyone know how to convert those tandy sound files into midi or wav? I have them on disk, but obviously I can't check them out.

    Thanks, Death Lord

Im not sure if you wrote this Roger, or someone else, but it was in your post, and I would like to comment about it.

    >I agree Petrucci and Portnoy are predictable and I don't listen to any other >metal. I just have to say that in that genre of music , they shine out >amongst the dross.

I would argue that the only reason John and Mike would EVER be predictable is when you are a die-hard fan like I am, and know their styles so well that you can sing Learning to Live in your sleep. When Petrucci solos, often he plays the same lick over and over again (you all know what I'm talking about), and when Mike solos he plays that double-bass riff reminiscent of Peart (you all know what I'm talking about).

But consider this: When you first heard Dream Theater, were they predictable? Did you know that Petrucci would rip into that blindingly fast 32nd note run in PMU? Did you predict the 4/4 part in TTT right before the chorus that doesn't really sound like 4/4? Could you hum along to Metropolis on your first listen?

Petrucci and Portnoy are anything but predictable. The are the musicians we all want to be; musicians with seemingly infinite creativity, yet with their own distinct styles. In a jam setting like the LTE settings, they are going to rely on their bread and butter, the licks they know the best. So would you, and so would anyone. But even then, they seem to come up with stuff we have never heard before, just cuz they are that good.

Predictable? Perhaps, but only in the sense that you KNOW they are gonna blow your mind away, just like Miles, or Coltrane, etc.

    IMHO.

I am used to write stuff in Encore 4.0 for Windows, but there are a lot= of programs to do it. I also use Wingroove to make the MIDI instruments so= und like instruments.

What you want is a sequencer. with a sequencer you can place the notes on the staff, or you can input them from a midi-compatible instrumewnt (usually a keyboard), either in real time or note by note. there's lots out there. cakewalk is the one i'm familiar with, but i believe CuBase is a popular one for macs. most sequencers these days also support recording digital audio to sync with your midi tracks. unfortunately i'm not sure about webpages or anything for these programs. just thought i'd give you a quick answer as far as what kind of software you're looking for. moo.

I m asking for this, cause days ago, i downloaded a little Petrucci song he played in his Rock Discipline video, and thought that maybe someone here has a Paul Gilbert site or something......

It's not like Lacuna Coil is that obscure....they are signed with Century Media. When I first heard The Gathering, I was totally enraptured by Anneke's vocals and the atmospheric tunes and I decided I had to find some similar bands. I found out about them from www.seaoftranquility.org, and went to my local CD store and there it was.
